Hitch question....

I'm a newbie and not at all auto-tech savvy. I've searched the forums as there are many threads on hitches but I come away confused and a bit befuddled.

I've ordered my 2015 Patriot Latitude and was unable to get the hitch factory installed as it was not compatible with the Cold Weather Group option. The dealer said it wasn't a problem as they could always install the hitch for me later. I'm not all up to speed on the different hitch types but all I need it for is a bike carrier and possibly a cargo carrier. I have NO plans EVER to tow a trailer or anything like that so don't need a wire harness, oil cooler, etc.

In reading the threads I'm getting the idea that the reason they won't do the hitch with the Cold Weather Group is because that option includes tow hooks. Also, the threads mentions something about a "hole" being left in the bumper if you install a hitch when you have tow hooks.

I want no hole in my bumper!!! What's a girl to do? Installing myself is not an option.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

lisa

ps. Any pictures of what this should look like would be appreciated.

Hi Lisa

You have to cut out a section in the middle of the fascia for the hitch to come through. If you don't then you wouldn't be able to use the hitch let alone mount the bumper. The fascia wraps down and gets in the way of the hitch. There is no way around it. =(

With having tow hooks there is a cutout in the rear bumper for the hook to come through. If you install a hitch you have to either modify the hook or find other bolts that will work to keep the tow hook. If you won't be towing the dealer should have no problems finding you some bolts that will work. (The tow hooks are hardened steel and use smaller bolts than a hitch so they'd have to be machined out to use correct hitch bolts.) Or you could buy a new bumper cover or grab one from a pick and pull.

this is what my FDII looks like with hitch and tow hook removed
I use the hitch as a tow point so no need for the tow hook
My hitch does not need cut out in the bumper sits just below it,
hitch does use same bolt attachment point as towhook hence why they remove the tow hook,
if you do not like the hole,
some people have taken out the bolts in the towhook and replaced it with longer bolts keeping the towhook and hitch,
also can get a cut out cover for the hole if it bothers you
