Took it to a dealer. They diagnosed it as a bad crank position sensor. $250 parts/labor. Usually do the work my self but am letting them fix it this go around. The sensor is on a list of possible issues fro the error code P0335 that I pulled myself after on of the shutdowns. Not sure if they did some other testing to determine this is why or they are just guessing since that code has several possible causes. Will do some driving and see if it happens again. My jeep was built prior to the date for the fuel tank transfer tube and roll over valve recall/TSBs mentioned above.

I've also replaced my spark plugs after it started shutting it self off since that can also cause the engine code I was getting but it still kept happening.

I have a 2013 jeep patriot... same thing..I. lose power steering... press on gas nothing happens...I have a clutch, so I.pop. in into gear... but still it's scary bc I. have a little girl. the service department did nothing bc there was no code. ... and there you have where they care about their customers

It has happened to me on three different occasions with no explanation as to why from the dealer. The problem is intermittent and doesn't throw codes so there is no resolution! I have noticed it only has happened in the summer months (((knocking on wood))) It hasn't happened this year, but it has been seasonably cooler thus far. also mine is standard and stalls!

Purchased brand new 2013 Jeep Patriot, driving to work on a flat road car shut off wouldnt start, had to be towed to dealer. Currently day 4 at dealer and nobody knows whats going on. Of course 2013 Jeep Patriot has yet to have any recalls. Could it be the infamous TIPM propblem of earlier year models? Doan Dodge Jeep Dealer is not helpful and just wants to make me pay for 4 hours of diagnostics alone! Has anyone had similar problem and what was solution?

Evening all, need a little help please, 2009 Patriot with the 2Ltr VW engine... it has been great for around 3 yrs. then just recently it stalls / cuts out if i run the revs over 2.5K (ie driving at around 70MPH... It is definately a fuelling issue as my fuel filter seems to empty (Physically checking this this coming weekend) I can even simulate the same fault just by sitting parked and running the engine for around 90 seconds at 2.5K RPM... The engine will not start immediately but will start after I 'crank' the fuel through, much the same a fitting a replacement fuel filter and not pre-filling it. It takes around 30-45 seconds of cranking (not continuous) to get the engine to restart.
I have had the tank off ( yes I found out afterwards that the sender / pump can be accessed from under the rear seat...).
Tank is clean, no crap in it, pump works OK and delivers fuel at a fair rate, replaced the fuel filter 4 times in around 6 weeks.
Any help would be appreciate it..
Thank for spending ya time reading this..

Wonder if its fuel pump feeder module
Not sure of exact name but its an electronic control module that regulates the fuel pump

I just had this happen to me as well. Luckily I too was driving in a residential area. From what i've been reading I hate to say it but I'm relieved i'm not the only one this has happened to. from the previous comments i'm hesitant to take to to the dealer and pay for them to tell me everything is fine. I do have a lot of key chains so maybe that could be an issue? I also drive on bumpy roads being in California theres a pothole every few feet it seems. I have a 2010 jeep patriot with around 80,000miles and have had this car for about 3 years. this is the first time i've had any issues at all. i don't know exactly what to do.

I have been having this problem with the ignition cutting out randomly for a couple of months. The car is off the road now until I can get an idea of the cause. Mine is a 2008 4x4 North edition, manual. First time it was a no start in the driveway, had it towed, it started up perfectly at the shop, they could find no fault or code so I took it back. Since then it has had the same condition about 12 times, sometimes when starting from parked, sometimes while driving.

My feeling is it is ignition based, the car runs perfectly when it runs but will cut out with no warning. Symptoms always the same. All lights on the dash come on with the chiming, tach registers zero and the engine is cut out. I am quick with the clutch so I can usually coast it a bit. Sometimes it will restart sometimes not all, I have had to tow it with my truck. Often after a short distance of towing I can stop and try again, it will restart. I might get it home, I might not.

1. Ignition on - all warning lamps illuminate, turn key nothing happens no click at the solonoid, dash lights don't dim. Tried with both the original keys same condition. Tested and cleaned the clutch cut out, its seems fine. Battery connections cleaned and checked for tightness

2. I read some of the previous entries on this thread, I have checked the relay in the front left fender, tug tested each cable in turn, all good and it was pretty clean

3. The fuse box in the engine bay has been highlighted by others too, mine is really clean along withthe harness attached to it and all fuses removed and checked with a multitester, reinstalled, nice tight fit.

4. key only has a leather tab on it so no weight

My dilemma is I cannot sell it as it is because it is unsafe but every visit to the shop costs for the towing and they never find any fault so I will have to find it myself. OR I let the shop loose replacing parts on a MIGHT fix it basis. The car has 160k miles so I would quickly exceed the residual value of the car. The other option is to sell it as a non-runner parts vehicle. My preference is to fix it. Does anyone have an idea of where to look next?

Engine Shut down

Hey guys. I have had the same issue. I recently purchased a new 2013 Jeep Patriot and it has been stalling out. Not like a normal stall where the engine bogs down. The steering wheel locks up, brakes don't work and the engine basically shuts off. I have to turn it off and then turn it on again. I have taken it to jeep and they are unable to replicate the issue. Therefore, they say they can't do anything and it is fine, when in reality I know it is broke, and I will not endanger my family. What can I do. I love the Patriot and got an awesome deal on it. It has 500 miles on it currently. Any suggestions, thoughts on what it could be or what my next step needs to be? Thank you very much.

Also forgot to mention. The car has done it on several occasions. Preparing to stop, starting to move, idling, and making turns. I have logged everything because I really think this is a lemon, I have had it in my possession for only about 4 days out of the month I have owned it. Everyone seems to point fingers, not believe me, and I know that if it was their family in the car they would care. Has anyone had a resolution? I will let you know if we do. Thanks again!

Michael
Hi Michael,
I own a 2013 jeep patriot the 2lt fwd model and I'm having the same problem. In fact my car is sitting in my driveway with the hood up. I've been told a lot of different things so far about what it could be but yet to start my investigation. So here is a list of the things I've been told thus far.
1. Try changing fuel filter
2. Check fuel pump
3.get keys checked/re-chipped replaced
4. Could be ignition switch problem
5. Check for electrical fault with fuel system.
And the list goes on but you get the idea.
I will be starting at the top of my list to see what happens and I will let you know but from the looks of it, it might take me awhile to figure it out.
I had the same things happen as you, stalling at idle, waiting at lights. Stalling when going to take off from set of lights, stalling while driving. And now...... Stalling immediately after starting, all lights and electronics still fully functioning but you can turn that key for a month and not even a peep from the engine.
I don't think you have a lemon and I believe the problem is pretty wide spread. And at all different models and at different klms. I'm now at 260,000klms and the issue started around the 250k mark.
My car has never left the tar and has always been serviced regularly.
I'm from Sydney Australia so never ever had a cold start and never over heated.
For now I'm at a loss but working on an outcome.

Stay tuned my friend.

Hi all

MASSIZE UPDATE.

Thinking logically I thought I'd start with trying things that were not going to cost and work my through the problems...
So I popped out to the car put the key in and turned it an again all lights and car function fully operational but not starting, not a single noise from my engine. Scratched my head and went and got my spare set of keys... JEEP JEEP she started first turn, no stalling no problems at all.
So after a good 40min drive around my neighbourhood I pulled up in the drive way and turned the car off. Now this is when my car would normally not start again for at least 2-3 hours. NOT THIS TIME... she fired 5 min later and again 20min later.

In conclusion I would say that the issue we are having is to do with the keys for the car. And to back this up a little further it would also explain why we are having the same problem all at different klms. I don't know much about the keys but it will be the next thing I spend a little time learning about. Maybe the battery in the key might be on its way out or the chip, this I will have to investigate further.

I really do hope this helps you as I'm now smiling again about my wonderful car, let's just hope it stays a smile.

I have a 2010 Jeep Patriot latitude package, I have had my jeep since Oct 2010 and it just hit 19,400 miles. Yesterday, as I was driving home, my engine shut off WHILE I was driving. I was lucky to be in the residential area, otherwise I may have caused an accident. This is the first time anything like this has happened. The only thing that went off was my engine, all my electrics were still on; radio and lights. I turned the ignition to off, then turned it back on and it started up again instantly. I immediately took it to Jeep and today they called me saying they couldn't find anything wrong. The only thing they mentioned was if I was driving on rough roads, that could have jostled my key and shut the engine off, and that this had happened to others due to the new style keys. I will say, I live in Colorado and we had a massive snowstorm that left the roads with thick ice and bumps, but aren't jeeps meant to handle that kind of terrain?

My question is, has anyone else had this happen? Has anyone heard of this happening? I love my car, but I feel a little unsafe as I transport kids in my car and fear this may happen again on the freeway. Any knowledge of this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I know this reply is many years later, I have a 2011 jeep patriot at 160k miles. I also just had a large snowstorm and I was on a bumpy/icy road tonight in the mountains making a sharp right turn when my engine stalled in the same way. I read online it may be the MAP sensor if it happens while making a sharp turn. I am also due for spark plugs and a new air filter so it could be any of these causes. Hopefully, it doesn't happen again but I will be getting it checked out soon.

some causes of engine shut down could be a variety of things, from electrical connections to fuel feed issues. If the the speedometer, as well as the rev counter/tacho went to zero suggests a power feed issue to the engine management electrics in some way. try to get this looked at with some urgency, as the next time it happens, you maybe won't lucky where it occurs. Make sure you have all the details you can remember with you when you discuss it with the mechanic/dealer representative.
And what if it’s just the tach that sharply drops to zero when the engine dies? The speedometer gradually goes down as I try to maneuver to a safe place without powersteering or gas hah

Stalling - Does it occur after filling gas tank?

I have a 2008 Patriot which stalls while driving and is very dangerous. I can only replicate when I fill the gas tank. The dealership said to idle after filling (to be safe) before driving on a road.
There is no warning, power steering shuts down, power breaks then engine. It does not matter what speed either.
One time I drove 150 yards, another time approximately a quarter mile.

At this point my solution is not to fill the tank.
I have this exact same problem with my 2007 Jeep Patriot. Gas additives didn't help. I just adapt by pulling away from the pump and putting it in neutral while revving the engine before I pull out in traffic.

I still occasionally stall if I have to stop in traffic for the first mile or two, but it always corrects itself within a few minutes.

This is a problem that a lot of us have. Here’s a post with a good visual:

There are a lot of posts in that thread, but that sums up the problem nicely. Someone made a complaint to the NHTSA, but the petition for action was denied. Info in this post in the same thread, which includes a link to the Federal Register article about the investigation.

One strategy that my family uses is to not fill the tank all the way. If I want to fill the tank, I try to make sure I am at a station that lets me pull out and get up to around 30 mph or more quickly. At such speeds, my engine will momentarily have a drop in RPM, but not stall.
