Hello everybody. I have recently been looking on personalizing my 2008 jeep patriot with a pair of Spyder smoke tail lights off of carid.com but I could not find any laws regulating Tint on the headlights or taillights in Rhode Island. Is there anybody that has done this them self or know of any information regarding my problem. I would much appreciate it.

The smoked tails from carid/spyder, are indeed highway approved. Scroll down, it's listed. smoked tails are a very grey area with law....not supposed to change them, because of safety reasons....but, each state has their own law on "how far the light must be visible in day and night scenarios"....if they can meet all requirements for light output....it's legal.

I wish they had the front...

dont see tinting mentioned in regs
but they do have to comply with 500' rule
how you prove to a cop you are in compliance, i dont know,
i wouldnt risk it
would rather use removeable headlight covers instead

Coming from LEO in MA. The change will likely be illegal. Every state law is different but the Northeast generally have very similar traffic laws..The law you should be looking into is not the "brightness from a certain distance" but the altered equipment. In MA, any alteration from factory lighting (Halogen to HID, factory tail light assembly to aftermarket) is illegal. While there is still a law for visibility of brake lights.. even if you complied with that, I could still stop for altered equipment. Silly law that I personally never enforce.. but does exist.. Not sure about RI though.

I've used this in the past and clear coated over, came out perfect.

I used plasti dip for my taillights and front turn signals. Theyre okay, but i'll be switching to film this spring. I've had cops stop behind me at intersections and they've never noticed it and I've never received a ticket even though it is illegal where I live.
