Hey everyone,
I thought some of you might find some interest with this problem, and might even might know what it actually is (God forbid you have had the same thing)...
I bought a new 2010 patriot, limited, deep water blue at the end of May up in Colorado. I drove up to the mtns and hung around there for a week, and then started the 1000mi drive to SoCal.
During the first day of the road trip, 75mph cruise control, probably in the 90-100 degree range, 1/4 of a tank, the engine shut off. There were no warning lights, no weird sounds, nothing that would tell me anything was wrong. So i pulled over to try to turn the engine back on. It would crank but not catch... no gas was reaching the engine. And by this time the ETC light came on. I tried everything the manual said to try: Cycle the ignition when the vehicle has completely stopped and the shift lever is placed in the PARK position; the light should turn off. I tried every variation of gears and every variation of cycling the key.
It is not a battery issue, jumping did not solve the problem. I got towed 100 miles, and 4 hours later after it was off the truck and had cooled off, it turned right back on. No lights or anything. I took it into the JEEP dealer, and their computer retreived no codes, as if it never even happened.
So I drove it the next day, until again I hit 1/4 of a tank, 70mph cruise control, 100 degrees outside, and it shut off the exact same way. Again i got towed, and it turned on a few hours later after it had cooled off. The dealer couldnt get any codes to read out, again.
One theory: one mechanic said there is a temperature gauge in the gas tank that will stay cool when the gas sloshes over it. But when the tank gets low, it can't cool off enough. And he said if that overheats it will shut off the gas to the engine without registering any computer codes. But this should happen in the first place...
has anyone else had this problem or know anything about it? My riot has been running fine since then, but my next big road trip won't be until september.
i appreciate any help/ideas/comments.
Thanks
