Gascap warning

This morning pulling out of my apartment I heard "ding ding" and saw "gascap" on my dash.

I pulled over and checked the cap, I took it off and back on and it was tight. I drove into work with the gascap warning on, then got to work, shut it off and looked again. I noticed that if I push on the gas cap the fill neck seems to move up and down. I've never noticed this before but never had a reason to.

I'm reasonably sure a gas cap issue should be covered under the emissions warranty that is separate from the 36k bumper to bumper warranty.

Can someone else walk out to their Patriot and see if you can make the fill neck move by pulling up on the gas cap?

Ill check tonight.. my cars in the shop for the day for a 4 hour job on 2 front wheel hubs..

But whatever you do, dont buy a locking gas cap from MOTOR RAD, the light will come in in a month or 2, you might even get check engine! Try filling up with gas all the way and tightening cap, should go away right away..

But ill ask them how much a gas cap is while there

Well mine is saying GASCAP on the odometer, but is not showing a check engine code.

Ok I called a dealer and they said the gas cap is not covered under the emissions warranty. Just the catalytic converter and the pcm.

h3nry888. I've got a lockable MotoRad gas cap from CrappyTires for $20 since my Patty was new. I'm happy with it. Dealers wanted $150+ for deluxe Mopar custom keyed cap.

In the early years, I got the silly MIL and GasCap warnings; blamed it on the MotoRad. Those silly warning lites chimed in again when I changed back to my OEM cap. Eventually, I chanced on the old large-swing-in-outside-temperature pattern. And the old driving cycles delay before lite clears.

Warning lite will clear eventually by the remedy in the referred link. Eventually means a few driving cycles. see link in prior post. Lockable cap is cheap insurance against sugarfoot and midnight gaz retrievers. LOL

I fooled around with this malady for 30k miles or so before I got a new MOPAR cap. The GASCAP warning would come up off-and-on with temperature changes or at random. It also caused the MIL to come on. With my 07 Patriot, I was having a stalling/idling issue and reduced fuel economy as well, which now seems cured with my new cap. The code said I had a small vacuum leak, which would cause poor idling.

Replace your cap now! It was $14.

Probably has a vacuum sensor in the tank. If the pressure in the tank is slightly less than the outside then it is sealed.

Also... Gascap warning has been gone since that evening.

I had someone at work also mention he had a similar problem with a car that ended up being a cracked fuel line.

Greetings Fellow Patriots!
I too got the Gascap indicator on the Odometer of my 2008 Pat. I opened the cap and then replaced it making sure I clicked it a few times (5 or 6 as a guess). Jumped in started it up drove away it has not returned. I haven't check for codes with my reader yet, but I will this evening when I get home.
