After 3 months, I finally got everything I needed to finish the flip down tailgate speakers on my sport. I wanted a black, limited 4x4 patriot but when I wanted it, there was none in CA so I got the sport and decided to build my own my way.
I got the actual flip down speaker bar off ebay for about $100 from a wrecked compass, I got the speaker bezel plastic piece and inner mounting bracket both from mopar for about $100 each for a total of about $300 for the project. To get the 2 extra channels for the flip downs, I just ran an extra set of speaker wires from the rear channels of my 4 channel amp for my mids and highs. All the 3 parts fit perfect but it didnt come in black so that'll have to be another post and another day. Hit me up if anyone has any questions on it. The speakers sound okay but I gotta give credit to what "MCJ197731" did and put some new 6"s in with tweets soon. Bust out the barbeques and tall cans, its time for a tailgate

You know I kinda like the contrasting color. If it looks anything like the light color on the top portion of the cabin, then it's not so bad. Good job on the install it looks good, but yes, you will most likely want to swap for some aftermarket speakers. I bet they will be great for BBQs and Beers....dont forget the other B!

Looks good man! Thanks for the props. If you're interested I have an extra set of components just like the ones in my gate for sale.

My husband and I just bought our first Patriot last week (and loving it, may I add). My Xterra was falling apart right before my eyes and it would have cost me more to keep it than to trade it in... the sad part is that I owed almost twice as much on my Xterra than it was worth, so when I traded it in I had to opt for the MOST basic Patriot. We had the same thought as you... we'll just add to it later. The top projects on our list once we're back on track is the flashlight, the fog lights, and the rear speakers. We may be bugging you when we get to that point. Is an amp required for this project, or did you just use it because you already had it? Sorry, I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff...

It looks great, btw. Good job!!!

Guys, I wouldn't go through much trouble just to replicate the rear speakers of the audio package. While the rest of the package is rather good, those flip-down speakers are pretty stupid, as-is. First of all, the audio quality is rather poor. Second, there's no "only use the flip-down speakers" button but rather you have to run all the loudspeakers. Better keep those tailgate parties pretty short, or bring a another vehicle and starter cables... :icon_rolleyes:

Now, switch some better elements in there and add a switch cut-off switch so you can select only those speakers, and you might be onto something... I suspect that with that plastic housing, audio quality will remain unimpressive though.

I ran my battery dead the other day in the driveway with the rear speakers playing. your post give me an idea, how about adding a switch so just the back tailgate speakers turn on? I know you can just use your fade but on the touchscreen decks, its idna of a pain in the ass to get into you EQ and start dicking around with it. good thought

I have thought of a couple of subs in that rear part (I drive around with the cover closed all day long so subs are the proper equipment for back there as it is)... some Polk DB's ( http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB651S/Polk-Audio-db651s.html?tp=105 ) in the doors... good baffles... and an amp (Profile has worked great for me in the past and reasonably priced) and I should be set. May switch the front speakers for components but I am not much on drilling anything to pass wires through.

"All the 3 parts fit perfect but it didnt come in black so that'll have to be another post and another day."
Mine look like that and they are factory limited ones....have I missed something? do they come in black too?

#15 ·
Yea I've never seen them in black either i thought the beige or whatever it is it all they had too.

I agree with Tony1911, I've told all my friends about that cool option and me wanting to get that in my Pat Sport but pretty much all of them have said the same thing about the short running time. Do the cabin lights stay on when the liftgate is open too? That would suck...

That's adjustable. Turn your gauges backlight all the way down and presto! - the lights stay off when you open a door (or liftgate).

Just incase you haven't seen this yet, this is how I did it.
Oo, I like the way you've done the flip-down speakers! :smiley_thumbs_up: Not so much into filling the whole cargo space with speakers, but the flip-down part is nice. :)

Also, did you paint the flip-down part yourself? Never seen one that wasn't beige...

does anyone know what the mopar part numbers are for the "speaker bezel plastic piece and inner mounting bracket"???

Yeah i was thinking about puting some good ol 6x9s back there. Because i dont have the audio package. but i really dont know what is under that pice of plastic. Or if i have enuff space there to try to Macgyver someting up there. but yeah we will see.
So i need a little Q&A now. how in the world do your wire up the tailgate fold down speakers if you want to do the install your self?
Or are the wires there waiting for the install?

I realize this is an old post, but I have a question if you are still monitoring it... Where is the amp located that you tapped into for adding the rear channels for the flip down? I don't know much about this stuff, can't I just tap into the rear door speakers wires? Thanks!

Actually this is not entirely true. If you wire the speakers in parallel you would actually drop the impedance in most cases. And, without realizing it that is the most common way that poeple piggy back speakers into an audio system.
