Filling up my Jeep Patriot

Trying to find out if this is a defect or something common with the Patriot.
When I take my 2011 Jeep Patriot to the gas pump, it takes longer to fill it up than my other vehicle because the pump keeps cutting off. Now my wife and I have tried it at different gas stations but we have the same problem. The faster you fill; the faster it cuts off. I have tried putting the nozzle in at different lengths and still have the same problem. I thought it maybe due to the smaller fuel tank but the Patriot has about the same size tank as my Corolla and I can fill my Corolla up fast. Can anyone relate? If not, I will drop by the dealership. Thanks for the help!

I know what you are talking about, but I have only experienced it once or twice on the Patriot, about as much on any other car I have owned. For me, it was the pump

I'd suggest you take it to the dealer if you're still under warranty. My reason for this is gas tanks are a common defect of Wranglers (both TJs and JKs, although I haven't heard of it on a 2012 yet). On the Wrangler, it tends to start off as an early shut off, but progresses into a condition where the tank will blast fuel out of the filler. On the Wranglers the problem is something to do with the vent pipe clogging, no where for the air to escape so when it does it comes out fast bringing some fuel with it. The solution I use is to fill it slowly. when I get to about the last three or four gallons, I stop after every gallon, pull the pump out of the filler neck for a couple of seconds then fill it very slowly again. This seems to cut down on me getting covered in gas. The other solution is to just set it at a low speed and stand behind the Jeep, but it will sometimes come out with enough force to spray the gas up onto the pump where the numbers are.

So I've never heard of Patriot's having this problem, but since Jeep has a history of it and they refuse to take care of it (I want a recall and a permanent fix) I say get it in and get it looked at while you're still under warranty. In the Wrangler world the "fix" seems to be a replacement gas tank, but often the trouble returns and in a few rare cases the dealer goofs something up and people get check engine lights.

I do this too. I don't know if it's true or where I got it from, but I read that using the fastest setting on the nozzle results in more vapors being released and then the nozzle shuts off prematurely because the fuel tank thinks it's full, but it's really not. Again, I don't know if this is true, but I do it anyways.

Fuel Filling Problem

Hey there!

Has anyone had luck resolving this fuel filling problem? I have an 09 Jeep Patriot Sport I bought used about a month ago (only 21,000 miles!) and I have this same problem every time I fill up, every pump I've tried cuts off every half gallon or less if I try to rush the fill up. I rolled the dice with my regular mechanic and had him replace the fuel filler neck and $200 later I still have the problem:doh:. I just had this done today 2/9/13.

On my way home I stopped by a Jeep Dealership and they mentioned it could be the entire gas tank needs to be replaced because of a faulty valve where the filler neck connects to the tank but would need to go through diagnostic tests to verify the actual problem.

Just seeing if anyone had it resolved?

Thanks!

There had to be something wrong with the tank on my 2011. We traded it for a 2013 and the new Patriot has never had the problem with the pump cutting off. I was going to mention it to the dealer about my 2011 having the gas pump cutoff issue but never did...I just lived with it.

My Patriot seems to have very little room left in the tank once the pump clicks off. I usually end up rounding up to the next $0.50 to make my fuel log easier to manage.
I have only made it leak from overfilling once and that was when I tried squeezing the whole dollar extra in. My old car could usually take another dollar or two before anything would leak out.

Trouble fueling Patriot

I just had my gas tank replaced. It solved the fueling problem. It cost me $800, OUCH! It turned out to be a faulty roll over valve located inside the gas tank, only way to fix it is to replace the entire tank.

I suggest anyone with this problem to file a complaint with the NHTSA as a I feel a faulty roll over valve is most definitely a safety issue. Maybe if they get enough complaints they will open an investigation and get a recall on it, at the very least a TSB so we don't have to waste our money on unneeded work.

Best of luck!

I normally fill at the same marathon station every time but over the weekend i was out of town and experienced this for the first time, however when I filled yesterday at the normal station no issue i had chalked it up to the pump i may have to try other stations now to see lol

Only had an S10 that was a little quirly with this on occasion but most of the time it's ever happened to me, the guy before me must have felt compelled to topped off his tank 20 times and filled the "vapor return" part of the hose with fuel. I just hung it down and shook the filler nozzle to get the gas out of the return. Seemed to work after that.

I've been topping off my Patriot for almost 5 years and haven't damaged anything. Same with my Cherokee for 15 years and my Mustang before that. After the first click on the pump I can put another gallon at least in it.
The previously mentioned rollover valve protects the system from liquid gas intrusion, as well as during a rollover.

On my 2008 patriot I didn't have too much of a problem, could usually squeeze 2-3L of gas once it clicks off.

On my 2012 Compass, its worse, when it cuts off I can generally put 6-7L after it cuts off. Kind of annoying but I've just learned to live with it.

I had the same problem in a car where the fuel tank ws replaced before, it was the pressure release valve or hose..

My 2011 occasionally will cut off early while pumping and you have to fiddle with the nozzle position and fill speed to get it to keep going. Seems to come and go.

I can get an extra .5+ gallons in after it kicks off without any issues. I always top off in every vehicle I fill to the next highest even figure.

i went to speedway this morning for a fill on my way home from work and it cut off early 2 times at full pump speed but at slower pumping did not.

I have the exact same issue with my 2009 Jeep Patriot 4 x 4. Had the dealership run diagnostic tests today and they tell me a new gas tank is the only fix due to a problem with a valve inside the tank....they called it a "flapper" and an "inlet check valve". Talked to Jeep and to two dealerships and no one wants to take any responsibility for this issue. I also found the following Technical Service Bulletin which extends the gas system warranty on a number of makes/models for this very same issue, but the Jeep Patriot is not included - TSB 14-001-09 REV.A This is extremely frustrating. Car only has 53,000 miles on it and otherwise is in excellent condition, but I am not willing to spend $1400 to have this fixed plus add new tires, which I need. Too much money...however, how safe is it to drive with a stuck valve? Why isn't Jeep responding to these posts?
