Try one of the car parts stores (Autozone, NAPA, etc...). If not, your best bet will be the dealer

Dealer charges me about $280 for key + programming + labor. I contact couple locksmith services in local and price drops almost half. Did anyone deal with these services before?

 

As far as I know the dealer is the only one who can do a single key program, the locksmith usually needs at least one key to clone to make a second work. Once you have two working keys you can program more, but for a lost key without replacement I believe the dealer is the only choice.

My son just lost his only key to his 2007. Can the dealer program one from the vin or will they need the vehicle?

 

Well ... I have locksmith coming tomorrow. 30 mile service call into a remote area. $200 for 1 key or $250 for 2.

 

You better get two, and perhaps a 3rd that is a key that will work in the ign. and unlock the doors manually as a spare--that way, you will have the TWO keys needed to program a new one. Too bad Jeep doesn't suggest a 3rd key--my dealer did back in '08, and only charged $50 delivered--was a great thing to have when my wife lost her key....

 

I got a metal wal mart doors open only key as well in case I lock mine in

 

I have a plain metal key for the door. He said that would make it cheaper.

 

And, that is good in case you lock yourself out--but if you lose one of the "chip" keys, you're still SOL...

 

I bought a chipped key blank on Ebay for $8.00, took it to the hardware store where they cut it to match my FOB. I then programmed it with both of my FOBs. It unlocks the doors AND starts the car!
