After two transmission failures on my 08 Patriot Limited with a manual transmission I am done with this SUV and Chrysler. The Patriot is OK when it works, but it doesn't work very often. Customer service at the dealer and Chrysler is pitiful as well. I think this is especially sad as I live near the Belvidere plant and would like to see a local car do well, but this is unacceptable. If you still feel the need to buy a Patriot avoid the manual at all costs.

Also, the drivers side armrest is pure pain. Good luck all.

That's too bad to hear. I've also had a fair share of problems with my Patriot (nothing major like the transmission, though), and I'll definitely be considering a non-Chrysler vehicle more than anything else once I trade in the Patriot.

unless I look at a Wrangler Unlimited because I've really come to like those for some reason after buying the Patriot...

I hear you Wheezy, this is my third Jeep and I loved all but the totally unreliable Patriot. We also own a Chrysler mini van that is OK, but I really think Chrysler is headed for the ditch.

Writing as an older feller and can understand a vehicle causing anger. My family now moving into another generation all agree our most favorite car. It was a fancy dancy Black with Red trim 1990 Lumina Euro tripped out with all the options which dropped two transmissions before 5K.

The dealership went knuts trying to keep us happy, and did. What a fine vehicle after the baby burps of a new line of cars was fixed. If memory serves GM stood behind any problem on the vehicle for the life of the drivetrain. Those were the days of firm 3 year 36 K Warr.

well there goes the theory that standards are better. or that chrsyler cant even make a simple standard transmission

Well, in that case, stay away from GM too. We have 2 of our GM vehicles drop transmsiions in the last couple years and my parents Regal with less than 90k miles is totally out of commision right now and we can't figure out what is wrong with it, but it is something electrical (turn the key to on, the car does not start, the shifter will not shift out of park, all the dash lights start blinking the fuel pump wtsarts whirring and doesn't stop and the air conditioner turns itself on, WTF????). This has convinced me to never, and I mean NEVER to give GM another chance. My Grand Prix before 100k, both front hubs, sway bar, multiple brake issues (including brakes that would not take effect when it was wet and other times when you push the brakes you get mush and not much else). Not to mention interior parts falling off, between 110 and 130k, the transmission failed, the AC stopped working, the window switch on the driver's side quit working, the molding on the outside was coming loose, would go out to it and try to start it and the battery would be dead (even after a new battery), the rear speakers only worked intermittently (since I got it), just so much more than I wanted, so I feel your pain, but it took 3 bad examples before i gave up and never considered GM when I was looking for a new vehicle. Of course i had a 96 Caprice I had bit over 100k and was basically flawless except for the red coolant stopping up the heater lines. I hope this Jeep does good, so far only issues are a buzzing speaker and a missing center cap at 3500 miles, going to the dealer hopefully next Friday to get those taken care of when the oil is changed. I feel your pain, but i think your experience as far as transmission issues is the exception and not the rule. i hope so anyways......

Stew--this might be a longshot but it MIGHT be your torque converter locking up. I had a 90 Lumina that did something just like what you had and come to find out it had an TCC Solenoid that controlled the torque convertor

I work at the Belvidere plant and also own a Patriot with a Manual trans and I am just curious what dealer you went to? There is one in particular that I won't even get close to. Thanks...

I agree...once this 2008 is paid for, or if I finally loose all tolerance for it, I'm moving on to a non Chrysler product.
I have sat and driven a number of Japanese vehicles since I bought this thing, and I was much more excited doing so, than I ever was when I received the call to come pick up the Patriot.

That is very possible. I had a 90 Buick Skylark with a very similar TC in it. Required a total tranny rebuild at 94k. It worked like a charm afterwards.

I mean while we are on this subject, as much as i like to support American companies, none of them make a quality car anymore. If you want to support some american manufacturing, you can buy Honda, they are made in Ohio.
That's actually not true. A report on the nightly news about a month ago showed statistics that American car companies are catching up with the foreign makers in quality. They are still behind but gaining ground. Unfortunately, perception is 90% of reality in most people's minds.

I would think its hit or miss with any of the American companies. My one daughter had to replace a tranny on her 2001 Escape at 110,000 and just before that the A/C compressor..My other daughter has a 01 Malibu with 153,000 and it has been very reliable with only some minor issues

Are you talking about Lou Bachrodt? I used to work there before i joined the Navy:D

I own two diffrent F-150,s models, the 2000, model and the newer 2004 model.
Zero problems, none to this day, and our construction bussiness drives the heck out of them on a daily basis.
each have over 150,000 miles on them, couldnt be happier with them other than the Price of gas.
I think american cars get a bum rap sometimes.
