Hey mates,

Thought I'd share this with you since there might be some in the crowd that the info might be useful.

My Jeep: 2008 Patriot Limited 2.4L with CVT2 and 2000 kilometers on the odometer.

I was on a trip yesterday and noticed 2 VERY disturbing problems with the CVT transmission.

Problem #1- Cruising highway speeds.
On my trip I was on a highway and when accelerating to the speed limit of ca. 80mph it happened. Settled on the speed, popped Cruise Control on, and set the speed. It was OK at first but it then suddenly revved the engine up to 6000RPM and kept it there for some seconds and then resumed normal operation and lowered the RPMs to around 2500. I first thought it was just a random glitch, but the same thing happened a second time. The third time I was going 80mph on with the cruise on and without a particular reason it just started to rev up the engine, and up to 6000RPM and after a few seconds back to normal.

Problem #2 - Passing = no revs?
So after the highway I was on the motorway doing some 60MPH behind a 16wheeler truck, a good spot opened up and I put my foot on the gas and decided to pass the 16wheeler. All ok, until I got up to the side of that LOONG truck when suddenly the engine seized revving, put the RPMS into some 1200-1500 and no matter how much I put my foot down nothing happened. Panic settling in and another truck coming at me (I'm on his lane, with another car passing the 16wheeler behind me) I by happenstance juggled the gear lever and put it on the autostick side, realized this and popped it up to fourth gear, got past quickly (the car behind me manager to pull back behind the 16wheeler) and after a few minutes after this I managed to park the Jeep on the side of the road. Turn the engine off and after a coke and walking around the car a bit I managed to walk off the adrenaline rush. Talking about scary sh1t here.

I'm taking the car to the dealer next week (seemed to work fine the rest of the trip and today) and getting it serviced. But as a word of advice, learn how to use the autostick AND teach your better half how it works as well. In the case this wasn't a random episode...

I'll let you all know what the dealer says.

Just got off the phone with the dealer (taking it in tomorrow for diagnostics). He hadn't heard of a similar problem (I do trust the guy) in the 2 years they've sold the CVT (chrysler/jeep applications). He was guessing it might be some sort of cruise control problem (even though I wasn't using cruise control to pass the 16wheeler, i did have it "active"), instead of CVT.

Until tomorrow...

I have the CVT2L and my acceleeration problems have been sporadic at worst. Off the line with foot planted, it is surprisngly zippy for a 4-banger. Passing could have more zip but I have been driving 4 cylinder cars for years and I know you need to be going downhill with a good backwind to pass quickly. Passing with the Patriot for me has been adequate. So, I am thinking the acceleration software upgrade TSB may help here.

Please keep us posted. My Pat has plenty of zip and I was surprised at the ability to accelerate when at 60 MPH. It really just zoomed with a very turbine sensation. Your situation must have left your finger tip impressions in your dashboard! I have a hunch there is something amiss with the cruise control/computer system. Good luck!:icon_rolleyes:

I'm not aware of a CVT upgrade for 2008 models? Is there one?

Drove the car about 1000 kilometers over the weekend (a trip up north) and no problems.I am thinking the 'first time' speeds over 80mph might have caused some sort of glitch in the cruise control module.

I had to postpone the dealer checkup due a trip I gotta take with the car. I will however try to get it looked at by the end of this week. Will keep you posted.

Just got back from the dealer. They checked fault codes and histories and found nothing. Everything is like it should be, so they went ahead and updated the computer softwares and did the first routine maintenance (oilchange/etc).

They must have called around A LOT for the issue to be solved, becouse just a few minutes later I got a call from Jeep dealer asking about the exact symptoms. Seems like nobody had had anything similar, so they're hoping it's just a software glitch on a new car (first time over 60mph, or such).

Found out another interesting issue though about a problem in all 2008 patriots. I'll post it on another message.

Problem #1- Cruising highway speeds.

Just a FYI, but I had a similar experience happen to me once. (Speed was somewhat over 120km/h and revolutions popped no higher than 4500...5000 RPM though, so not quite so bad.) Once, in five months, and I tend to toggle cruise control on and off during my longer drives during weekends. Very intermittent, in other words.

Don't expect any powerful passing power at hwyway speeds. Due to the low gear ratios, that engine is zipping at appx 3200rpm doing 120km/hr.

This thing is very thristy once you go beyond 100km/hr.

Why couldn't they put a proper hwy gear on this thing like the trail rated cherokee :(
