Not sure if its the same on the American models, but on the Australia version of the Patriot and Caliber, there is an anoying Chime when you have the keys in the ignition with the door open. Its so annoying when you are cleaning the car, you can't have the door open and the radio on!

Does anyone know how to turn this off? Both vehicles have EVIC but no where can you turn it off. The dealership said they can't do it.

Very frustrating!

Heh, this is basically standard fare on all North American made/built vehicles. It does get annoying at times (I definitely agree with you on the whole having the driver's door open with the radio playing), but I don't think there's a way to (easily?) disable it.

And then there's people like me that accidentally tune it out.... :/

I was driving Hubby's car all last weekend and kept leaving the darned lights on everytime we stopped somewhere.

All I can say is, it's just reminding you that your keys are in the ignition. There for people like me who have been known to lock their keys in the car.
How can you lock the keys in the car when the remote is on the key? ;)

Why couldnt they just have given it a "ding" or "ding-ding"? Instead of "DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!DING!"
Stupid...

Thats what I thought too, how can you lock the keys in the car if you also use the remote and they are in the ignition!!

I don't mind the lights dinging, thats fine. But the keys is just annoying. I think fine if the car isn't actually turned on to Accessories, but if you have it on and radio playing etc...there should be no reason to have this annoying feature!

Look forward to hearing who knows how to disable it.

Dunno if you're going to be able to disable it (that make sense?). But whenever I am vacuuming the car and need the door open, I just pull the keys about a 1/4 inch out of the slot and it stops that annoying beeping.

I also leave my keys in the car in my garage (and IT gets locked at night) so I tend to just slightly pull out the keys enough to stop that dinging.
It's probably not the brightest idea, but it works for me. :D

Yep, I always do that when I'm pumping gas so I can still hear my NPR... must have NPR at all times! :p

I can't friggin stand "unnecessary" noises so I always make sure to keep that key out just a tad... and to turn off my blinker promptly after using it! :D

OK...somewhat off topic here, but I've got a funny story to share about keeping the keys in locks and pulling them out just a hair...

We used to do that in one of our German apartments. We'd leave the key in the door and pull it out a click or two...that way we always had a key right there to lock the door at night.

Then our dog helped us discover that leaving the key in all the way prevented another key from being inserted all the way on the other side.

I came home from work for lunch one day to discover that Fred had nudged the key all the way into the lock from the inside, and I was locked out. By my dog.

Yeah...that was a fun phone call to make..."Uh...I'll be a little late coming back to work. My dog locked me out and I have to wait for maintenance to come drill the lock so I can get in..."

So we stopped doing that little trick pretty quickly.

I'm still waiting for the day of remote-keyless-entry into my home!

Didn't he also figure out how to open the front door in one of your apartments over there?!

Both of the apartments. Germans don't use doorknobs...they use the latch style handle.

Fred is a very clever little lab.....

He just wanted to go "mudding" and bring his mom along with him! (He's an "off-roader," didn't you know?!) :p

Odin has actually learned the mechanics of opening doors ~ he stretches up on his back feet and puts his front paws around the knob and tries to turn it, but his poor furry "snowshoes" just slip off... then he screams, scratches the door with one furious slash (sometimes biting it for good measure,) and screams some more until we let him outside to explore the garden... HA!

I have done that, but you can't have the radio on then. For the radio to work on Aussie models, you must have the key turned to accessories. You have to have the car off completely to pull the key out 1/4 inch.

ahhhh, wanting the radio to be on..(same as us here..gotta have it on acces.) I don't think we could have it both ways though. We might be outta luck for wanting keys all the way in (which we need for the radios) AND having no key chime with door open. Mannn, wouldn't it be nice though?
Come to think of it..is it JUST the drivers door? Should I start cleaning out the Pat using the passenger door so I can hear music?? Gotta try that later today..

A few years back, I was in my 90 Subaru Legacy. I stopped the car to take a picture of a lighthouse from a narrow causeway out here. On the north was Long Island Sound and on the south was Gardiner's Bay. So, I got out of the car and left the key in the ignition, with the engine idling and I also left the door open.

As I was there taking my picture, a large gust of wind hit and the car door was blown shut with great force and it immediately locked all the doors!

There I was standing on this windblown causeway, salt spray in the air, locked out of my idling car in Februrary. Arrrgggggg! I was finally able to flag down a guy who had a cell phone and I called my wife at home to come, with the extra set of keys, and bail me out. She laughed for a week!

Oh I HATE when that happens...;)

Uh..not like that sorta thing's ever happened..to me..or anything..:p

Turn off car. Leave keys in ignition.
Open door.
Press lock button on car door.
Close door.
TADA!!!!!! Keys locked in ignition.

That's how I would locked the keys in the Jeep. Cause I lock the doors with the lock button on the doors cause the HONK is a little loud and makes me jump every time. I don't use the keyless to lock it but to unlock it I do.

I took my Patriot 10' to the Jeep dealers for its first service and when they returned it the 'key in ignition' alarm was gone. The service guy asked why I hadn't already removed it as it is one of the first things Patriot owners usually do? Though I had already looked through the Jeeps manual which did not provide instruction on doing so. I know this doesn't answer the question on 'how to' but from the way the service guy made it sound like common knowledge, I assume it can be done without difficulty.
