Blown engine?

On the way to work this morning, just as I was going onto the exit ramp from 79 south, heard a noise, and all my dash lights lit up. Zero power, so threw it in neutral, and drifted off onto the shoulder.

When we loaded it on the flatbed, I could large amounts of oil under it, but in the dark was hard to see past the skids to see what could have happened.

There was a large spill of oil on the flatbed as we took the Patriot off it too.

At the closest dealer I could find now, and I'm waiting for their call to tell me what went wrong.

Guess I'll find out how good the lifetime warranty is soon.

Hard to read I know, for some unknown reason you can only upload a PDF that is smaller than 19.5KB, with would be just a thumbnail, maybe, so changed it to JPG, and still hard to read. If anyone wants it better, PM me and I can e-mail it to you.

Cylinder number 4 rod locked up and broke.
So you threw a rod at just about 104,000 miles. Seems atypical. Can't help but wonder why and want more answers from the dealer...

Feels like it was my car. :D

Hopefully you get the check engine light sorted and be done with it.

Makes me glad I bought the lifetime warranty, but it still doesn't instill a lot of confidence. Congrats on getting your Jeep back! I am curious to know about the check engine light too. Based on the parts break down, it sounds like they rebuilt the engine? I would have guess you'd have gotten a crate motor

Looking at the parts list, looks like a new short block, new cam gears, timing chain and tensioners and a new cylinder head (along with new assorted gaskets, bolts and washers). Assembly of the complete engine was clearly done by the dealer (ie. bolt new head onto new short block, install cam gears and chains then install all engine covers). Something definitely grenaded bad inside there if the cylinder head wasn't salvageable. A rod must have let go and sent a piston slamming into the cylinder head and bending valves.

And this actually wasn't the first mention of an out of the blue engine blowing. We had a one time poster start a thread about dropping a rod and Jeep not paying for it or covering it. It was his sons up at college and the dealer claimed the oil filter was loose which caused a no oil situation. We sort of laid into him a little (some more then others :icon_rolleyes:) and he left.

He got laid into because they kept driving it AFTER they discovered it was losing oil at a rapid rate and the engine was making noise rather than having it towed immediately. They were mad at the dealer and blaming them for a situation they made infinitely worse. As I recall the kid took it back to where he was living after discovering the problem( noise, smoke, oil everywhere, etc... )then drove it again later over to the dealer or a mechanic. Something like that. Main point being they kept driving it after a serious condition was observed. They screwed themselves.

I bought mine through a Jeep dealer that sold them online. You can also buy them for used vehicles up to a point, but the price goes up a lot depending on mileage

All US sold vehicles( Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep )sold on or after July 20th something 2007 came with the LPTW through and including the 2009 models. Even covered left over 2006 models if they sold after the start date in 07. So any Patriot sold( in the US )after that start date through 09 models was covered.

Dixie - hope your Dad is home for the Holidays and glad to hear you got your toy back. Had an '83 S10 blow an engine @ 46,000. Premature failure of oil pump - after swap - engine light 3x - first 2 times were wires came loose and burned on exhaust manifold. 3rd time was o2 sensor.
What's the word on your light?
