Blown CVT Transmission!!! After only 26000km!

Hi everyone!
Big news here. After only one trouble free year of Jeep Patriot ownership I get hit with a bombshell. Chrysler wants to totally replace the pats CVT transmission.

The fun all started about a week ago when a sound started coming from the engine area that got louder as I accelerated. Its hard to explain but it sounded like a jet or a whistling sound. But the car drove normal except that my wife (she drives it most of the time) said it felt sluggish at times, and our gas mileage went downhill. Barely got 400kms a tank. So off it went to the dealership. Two hours after dropping it off I get the phone call telling me that it needs to be replaced, they drained the tranny fluid and found metal shavings in it.T hey mentioned something about a broken pin. And instructions from Chrysler were to not do anything to it but remove it, and that they would install a new one. And they would be shipping the tranny off to Chrysler so it can be examined further.

I am shocked. The service technicians were all too. I thought CVTs were bulletproof. We babied the car, it barely saw over 2000 rpms, and all maintenance was done on schedule.
Anyways now I am without the Pat for at week at least.

Any opinions, should I be concerned over the reliablity of this vehicle.
If it helps its a 2008 2wd North edition. I leased the vehicle with the thought of buying it out at lease end ,but now Im having my doubts.

Thanks and hopefully this does not happen to anyone else!

Actually the fact that they want to replace the transmission and have the old one sent back may be a good sign. If transmission failures are rare they want to see your old one to figure out what happened.

I would be more concerned if the dealer said that we know how to fix the problem because we have seen similar transmission problems several times.

I work at a CDJ dealership, and the standard procedure for any internal CVT failure is a new trans. They do not service any parts other than the trans filter and input speed sensor at this time.
The CVT is still being warrantied by JATCO at this time. That was part of the deal. Chrysler would use the JATCO CVT, but JATCO had to warranty it X amount of years.
I imagine that will change once Chrysler has to start paying the warranty claims on the CVT.
Look at the bright side, you are getting a new trans.:smiley_thumbs_up:

PB, yours may be the first one to go down. There has in no way been a rash of CVT failures to anyones knowledge here.
We have the 3-year/36k mile warranty, and it looks like my wife will get to use the 3-year part of that. She has never lost a tranny of any configuration, in any vehicle.

On a different note, I had a viscuous coupling go on my '93 Grand at about 100k, which is very rare. The replacement was still going strong when I dumped it at 301k miles.

Is anything really bulletproof?

Just be flippin happy that Jeep hasn't gone bankrupt yet and your warranty is still in tact!

Sorry about the inconvenience though, and hopefully they don't screw anything up while they are replacing the trans.

Sure makes that other fellow in the other CVT thread look silly when the dealer told him they are good for 150,000 Kms, boy he has egg on his face. ;)

Uh Oh! It probably is rare, but concerning none the less. I wonder what the price tag is outside of warranty - for those of us who missed the lifetime by two months. I don't know how people keep their revs under 2k. I think I'd have to cruise at 30mph to do that. We're regularly in the 4k range for acceleration (not drag style), cruise around 3k, and easily 5-6k in the mountains.

Just be careful they don't put you in something too nice during the downtime!

Mine rarely go over 2000 revs., except on cold days starting out it revs at 1500, and drives at 2500. Normally, driving down the highway at 80km/h its 2000 revs. 1500 in the city @ 50km/h.

I am upset you normally get over 400km a tank. I get 380.. What are the specs of your jeep?
We're getting around 500km to a tank. I'm guessing that living in the 'flat lands' helps in both regards.

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments.

Yes the CVT problem is very rare but the dealer has to fulfill their obligations and honour the warranty. It is a leased vehicle and I think it is in their best interests to repair the vehicle to the best of their abilities since they might end up with it in their hands in about 2 1/2 years time. I have done my part by making my monthly payments and servicing it as it says to in the maintenance schedule. To their credit they never raised any doubts about, or grilled me on my driving habits. They been very helpful thru out the whole ordeal. ( I am getting it serviced now at Colombo Chrysler because I recently moved to the area)

This car has never EVER been abused in any way. And I do believe it came out of the factory with some sort of defect. I do know that it was probably the first run of 08 patriots because I leased it September of that year and I remember my salesperson telling me that I received the first 08 ever out of that dealership (Brennan Dixie Chrysler).

The loaner vehicle Im driving is s 2009 sebring. I like it, I used to drive a Nissan Altima3.5
and I miss the sporty sedan drive.

If it helps its a 2008 4x2 North edition.

Thanks again.

That Sebring is the same platform, is it a CVT? I honestly don't know and never looked to see if ALL the Chryslers on this platform are CVTs.
Oh, I managed to spike the RPMs once to 6k, was I surprised. Like being in the mountains, the A/C does force more revs as well.
Personally, I like driving this CVT with the AIR OFF when I can. I love passing with it though, WOW, like a slingshot effect.
Yeah, the least little load seems to make them rev, even if it is just a couple hundred RPMs.

Well the Pat is back and right on time. I went to the dealership around midday to pick it up. The technician told me everything went smoothly except that they cracked the starter housing so they replaced that too:p

I think that this truck was messed up from the day it was built because it drove today like it never did before. Now when I push the gas it actually moves. Before if I would floor it (not often btw) the rpms would struggle to get up to 4000rpm and then dance between 2000-4000rpms and the whole time I was thinking that this is just the way CVT trannys work. Now just as long as I keep pushing the pedal, the rpms stay at 4000+

Funny how before this happened I was telling friends how CVT sucks and now I am singing its praises.

Now hopefully my mileage goes up.

Overall the whole ordeal was as pleasant as possible. The service dept. was great and I did not realize how nice a car my loaner vehicle was (sebring)

The only thing is that after 1 year I finally get to drive this car like its meant to be driven. Sort of leaves a bitter taste in my mouth like I was paying for a full Patriot but only driving half a patriot.

Oh well

YAYAYAYAYAYAY!!! Glad you have the "FULL" version of the Pat now. Sounds like it's acting more like mine (4k rpm).

Thanks for all the nice comments folks.

Now for all the helpful people that have been following this thread I have a bonus for you. Especially for those of us north of the border.

Tirerack.com has 215/60R17 Michelin X-Ice Xi2 tires on sale for 87.00 each in US funds. I just ordered 4 with taxes (gst & pst) duties and brokerage fees included for only $566.34 US or about $701.87 cdn.

These are supposed to be a killer set of winter tires.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...res/tests/TireTestServlet?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=X-Ice+Xi2&tirePageLocQty=

The original tire size on my jeep was 215/65R17 and the guy on the phone said that there would be no problem fitting these on the pat.

Not bad considering that there seems to be a shortage of winter tires everywhere in the greater Toronto area, and that Costco sells these for over $200 each! If they even have them in stock.

I will post this on the appropriate forum later. Hopefully before they are sold out.:D

I have a bad feeling about this:

Yesterday night I heard a whistling noise coming out from the engine bay when arriving home from a 160km trip. No overheated engine, no nothing. Prettyboy, can you explain me more on that? I suspect it is the noise you had.

"My" noise is present even when the engine is at idle. The more I rev it the more the whistling becomes audible.

One thing I saw is, for example, when the engine was cold this morning I could barely heard the noise, but once I drove at moderate speed (lets say 80-90km/hr) for an hour or so, the whistling appears.

Now I'm shocked as well. Maintenance has always been done on sched. 10700km so far. Also, my Pat coincides with yours since it is an export vehicle...

What do you reccommend me? Telling the dealer to focus on the tranny?
Keep you informed guys!

#23 ·
Pepe, hopefully the noise is not the transmission, I recall the noise only starting at when I hit 40km/h. At idle I could not hear it and also if I would put the car in neutral and hit the gas I would still not hear it.

So maybe its not your transmission. Does your patriot seem sluggish.
When you give it gas does it not want to go. Before my pat started making the noise I remember my wife telling me that the car felt slow.

You might want to bring it to the shop and ask one of the techs to take it for a spin. Just in case.

OK, so I went to the dealership to get this fixed and guess what...they say no whistling sound comes out of the engine bay!!! The noise is pretty audible to me!

Yesterday my only purpose was to find this "nice noise". I'm 75% sure it comes from here:

Any reccomendations?

Bad pulley bearings I think.
Reasons I referred to that specific pulley:

1.- Noise comes from the lower part, not from the top of the engine bay.
2.- I used my dad's strobe light and I could see all the other pulleys rotate evenly but specificallly that one does not rotate the same. Looks a bit "unbalanced" to me.

Time for a second revision...

I also had to have my CVT tranny replaced at about 40,000 km. It started off with a whining noise (like a bad bearing) at 80 km/h that got louder the faster I went.

Went to the dealer no less than 5 times to finally have the tranny replaced. 1st time - bring it back for a full day, 2nd time - bring it back when the tranny guy is here, 3rd time - we have to replace the transfer case, 4th time - replaced the case problem still there, 5th time - replaced tranny.

Near the end the sound started at 20 km/h and was pretty darn loud at highway speeds. Only info I got was that there was a bad bearing.

CVT nightmare

SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!

About 2 weeks ago I started hearing this whining noise. I thought it would go away. A few days later I noticed that it would get more rapid/louder when I accelerated. I thought it was a wheel bearing. I took it into a mom and pop shop and they performed an inspection on the wheel bearing using a stethoscope. They couldn't find anything wrong with the bearings. Then.. they suggested it was my transmission. I called the dealer, might I add, mine is a Jeep Compass, with a little over 50k miles...OUT OF WARRANTY..I am not the original owner, and when I bought the vehicle, I didn't purchase and advanced warranty of any kind. When I spoke to the service guy he states that there is absolutely NO Service that is performed on these transmissions... other then regular maintenance. When ANYTHING breaks, they just replace the whole thing... TOTAL WASTE!! What a great way to gouge customers out of more money.. ridiculous... anyway.. the repair is going to cost me $4000.... no less...

The funny thing about it is... my entire life, I promised myself I would never buy a Chrysler.. for real.. I heard horror story after horror story about how they have transmission problems out the wazoo...I even had an older friend that had an old Dodge van, he had the tranny replaced 4 times in that thing. 4 friggen times!! And I was soooooooo excited when I got my compass, I loved it.. the radio, the features, comfortable, good economy... to only put 30,000 miles on it.. to break down.

Never again will I buy a Dodge/Chrysler.. NEVER... Maybe an old CJ5/7 to beat around in the woods.. BUT NEVER EVER again will I prefer or recommend this POS brand name.

I would rather walk.

canada doesn't have the lifetime warranty i think.
