Bad fuel Mileage

Good Afternoon,

I just purchased a used 2010 Jeep patriot North edition with the 2.4L 4WD, automatic with a CVT transmission. It only has 66,000 miles on it. This vehicle was first sold in Canada when it was new. I am in Michigan, USA and purchased this from a local dealer.

I am new to the CVT transmission although I have driven a few newer cars with the CVT transmission. I am familiar with the way it functions but I am not sure if my transmission is functioning properly or if it is normal.

Since purchasing the vehicle I have had poor mileage. I was averaging 19.5mpg on the highway with the cruise set at 75mpg. The rpm stays around 3200. I noticed the colder it is outside the worse the mileage.

It has a brand new air filter, I just changed the spark plug last night. The old plugs were worn out with a final gap 0f .070-.072. I replaced them with NGK plugs and gaped them to the recommended .044. Since installing them the engine has idled smoother, picks up speed better, and the engine is a lot quieter.
My fuel mileage on the other hand was worse. I do not know what else to do here, I read a forum in regards to reseting the ECM, I have my battery disconnected and I also tried the trick of turning the key and once the idiot lights go out to press the gas pedal smoothly for 15 seconds till it hits the floor, then release it slowly for 15 seconds. I am not sure if that actually works but I am desperate and will try anything. I am no sure if there is an issue with the transmission, the RPM stays around 2500 at 60 mph, 3000 at 70mph and around 3200 at 75mph which did go down from 3400 after the spark plug change.

I am not sure if the North edition is geared different since it comes with skid plates (just a thought, I know it sounds ridiculous).

I purchased this after my jeep commander was totaled in an accident, I chose it because of the better fuel mileage than what I received my my jeep commander. I have a daily 164 mile one way dive to work, and 164 miles back home. I need something that is fuel efficient and unfortunately this is not working out and I need some help.

I would appreciate some ones help, not sure if anyone else had the same problem.

Thank You

FDII

Yes it does sound like I have the FDII model, I am currently getting between 20.5-21 since I changed the spark plugs so that is a positive sign but it looks like this is going to be the norm

"L"

Yes I do have the "L" gear, I am currently between 20.5 to 21 on the highway since the spark plug change. I just stopped by the dealership and they claim its the average mpg for this vehicle.

sounds about right for FDII
FDII has a lower gearing which reduces mpg's

you can try to squeeze a little more mpgs out of it,
but your numbers are about average,
i get 18-20 mpgs on my FDII thats with oversized offroad tires
some fill ups even dips into 16 mpgs

My average this winter has been 12.4 liters/100km. That translates to 19 US mpg. My wife primarily drives it to work where is a lot of stop/go driving in town.

Summer driving, it goes up to about 21 US mpg for her.

I can get 24 US mpg when I drive it to work, which is mostly secondary highway driving at 50-55 mph.

75 is too fast for best MPG, under 3K RPM is better. Try some fuel injector cleaner too, my Pats have both been FDII's, and run best if I use fuel injector cleaner at each oil change.

With more than half the tank highway, I avg around 22-23MPG, have hit 24-25MPG on road trips.
