Anyone using a JVC KW-AVX740?

So I am completely dissatisfied with the RES head-unit, I am unwilling to shell out the scratch for a MyGig, and I am not even considering buying a MyGig Clone.

I have done some shopping around, and it looks like the JVC KW-AVX740 DVD receiver is the best bang for my buck. It has Bluetooth, iPod conrtols, DVD, an external monitor output, can be interfaced with the steering wheel controls, and I can add a SAT radio tuner if I choose, as well as a backup camera(which is not a deciding factor)

I am curious about real world experiences, the fit & finish, etc.

*** RANT WARNING***
I really can't believe how far off the mark Chrysler is on RES head-unit. It's supposedly a 'media center', but it fails to interface with my iPod touch, the streaming BT is rubbish, and the UI is unfathomably slow when reading a USB flash-drive. I really wanted it to work, I am trying to keep the interior looking as stock as possible, and I didn't want to dump a bunch of cash into the stereo.

Thats a nice HU. I like many of the JVC's because they are detachable face units. I have not seen anyone on here with one, though. Most people seem to be going for the Pioneer DVD units.

That was actually the first unit I considered, but I want to retain the stock USB port in the glove box, and the only USB input is on the face. I also wanted a detachable face unit with an actual volume knob.

I have owned several JVC and pioneer HU's in the past, and I have never been dissatisfied with either. I currently have a Pioneer in the Wife's CRV, and I just unloaded my Alpine media unit on craigslist. For as much as I wish I had kept it, Id rather fill that hole in the dash with something the proper size.

The UPS guy showed up with my HU, and the FedEx guy showed up with my antenna lead, CANBUS adapter, and mounting kit. I'm still waiting for the steering wheel control box and the USB adapter, but I figured I might as well get started. It was not the easiest install I've even done, but it could have been worse.

I'm having an issue with the CANBUS adapter turning off the amplifier for 1 second every 30 seconds when the key is in the 'run' position, but I am communicating via email w/ a tech rep from Metra to either get it figured out of have the thing replaced.

Well, after 2 days of nothing but trouble with the CANBUS adapter, I have put the stock headunit back in and am returning the JVC and all of the crap I had to buy to attempt to make it work.

The company that makes the adapter, Axxess, had very responsive tech support, but they were completely stumped the the BA amplifiers kept power-cycling every 10 seconds with the key in the 'RUN" position. I was also not at all pleased with the quality of the audio coming through the adapter, they didn't have much to say about that.

For the time being, I picked up an 8GB thumb drive (that has already been filled with music) and I ordered an iPod cable and a USB charger from Amazon so I can run it through the AUX port and have it charge at the same time.

Sorry to hear of your problems... I was really interested in your progress.

Does the Ipod to 3.5mm cable you ordered connect to the Ipod dock? This will bypass the Ipod headphone amp, by using the Ipod line outs. It provides better sound and you do not have to tinker with the Ipod volume. I bought one on Amazon for $10.00 from Cables to Go.

I bought this one:

and this USB charger:

I have a Griffin adapter now with the play/pause, FF and Rew buttons on the back of the cigarette lighter plug and a 3.5mm line-out, but it is almost 5 years old and is beat to crap after being in several company/rental vehicles.

I would hope that Chrysler would get their act together and update the existing hardware to be compatible with current iPods. Every other vehicle that I test drove supported my iPod, the Subaru was the best and even responded faster than the Alpine I had in the durango, which was built specifically to work with an iPod.

Cool.

I like that cable. I use the USB charger from my Kindle, if needed (long trip to SOCAL). I have a Ipod docking station at work and it keeps my Ipod charged up for the daily commute.

I canx'd XM in our Chevy trucks, and thought the Ipod would be a good replacement for commericial free music in the Pat. I could have gone with an upgraded radio when we ordered the Pat... like the 430. In a way, I wish I would have.

Oh well.

So, the cable showed up today, but the 12V adapter is backordered, so I went digging through the box of old cell-phone chargers at the office and came up with a Palm Pre charger. It used a cigarette lighter adapter with a USB port in it, but only the Palm connector fits.

No problem, I just ripped it apart, de-soldered the spring and the wire that ran to the 'clips' on the side, soldered a 1ft pigtail of 20 ga. wire on it and wrapped the whole thing in heat shrink.

I went to the auto parts store and grabbed a couple of overpriced 'tap' connectors, hooked on to the wires for the existing 12V outlet, and voilĂ ! I zip tied it to the existing USB connector in the glove box, and routed the audio cable behind the bezel so it pops out in the corner where the AUX jack is on my head unit.

First, you need to get the proper CANBUS adapter. The range anywhere from 60 to 130 dollars, and are specific to the stereo you currently have installed.

I have the Boston Acoustic system and this deck did not play well with the amplifier.

The instructions with the harness you buy will tell you exactly what wires to crimp/solder together
