530 AM this morning on a local highway round these parts (Rt 23 in north new jersey) i was traveling to work in Manhattan when suddenly without notice a Jeep Cherokee driving the oposite direction swerves and catches the cement divider on two wheels and launching it in the air taking out a traffic light and slaming down and skidding to a stop wheels up, not 10 FEET in front of me...after the initial shock i put my 4 ways on jumped out of the car and ran over to the jeep ..A man in his mid to late 50's was in the jeep ..me and another stopped motorist dragged the guy out of the thing because he was choking on the smoke ..... NOT ONE SCRATCH on the guy..we leaned him up on the divider until the police arrived ..

He fell asleep at the wheel on the way to work...I cant stress enough the importance of good nights rest if you have to drive early..had it been a half an hour later then it was because of the legendary traffic, the entire south bound lane would have been wiped out and crushed by the airborn Jeep ... heres a pic i shot before i got back in my car

The good news is the man is fine ...The Jeep held up under a flying leap and crash to the ground , all the pillars stayed put and refused to collapes under the pressure. Be proud to be a jeep owner

Wow Slvrpat that was scary. A near miss. I'm glad that nobody was hurt. I think the driver of that Jeep was really lucky. And yes, driving and fatigue is a very dangerous combination. Even if you don't fall asleep behind the wheel like that guy, attention and reaction time decrease. But hey you can't say to your boss 'I didn't sleep well last night so I'm not going to work today'. The solution has to be a big cup of java after getting up.

.. the one SUV that isn't totalled on roll-over? hah.
good thing the driver is okay.
I'd be VERY surprised if it isn't totalled. Take a look at the A pillar and roof- they have clearly been bent from the weight of the vehicle. They prevented significant incursion into the passenger space (excellent), but once bent, they won't be fixed, not on a several year old vehicle (not even sure I'd try it with a new one).

He's in the market for a new Jeep. I hope you showed him your Patriot. :D

Job well done with the rescue. I'm impressed how well the Cherokee held up considering everything. Glad the guy is ok. I had a triple shot latte at Starbucks on my way into work. I've seen reports that reaction times and incidents with driver fatigue can rival driving under drugs/alcohol.

thats true; my boyfriend has a problem falling asleep while driving; His old GrandWagoneer sustained many mail-box & ditch related injuries [he grew up near Macon, GA]. The truck is still in relatively good shape; it needs a bit of interior work (understatement), but yeah.. that's a very true statement.

I've only fallen asleep once @ the wheel of my neon. Woke up inches away from the inside freeway divider.. luckily, no damage to the car, or anything else -- the bf didn't even wake up. lol

wow. i can't believe how STUPID some people are. and it's this stupidity that puts the lives of others in danger.

Tasha: You just dropped that comment in there right after the threads on being asleep at the wheel with never any intention to link the statement above to the asleep threads? Come now.

So, what exactly do you mean by "this stupidity"? Are people who lose consciousness at the wheel stupid? Unconscious is okay; but asleep is stupid? What?

:icon_rolleyes:

At least he was smart enough to buy a jeep. I fell asleep at the wheel years ago with my father in the car. Luckily I drifted to the right into the slow lane on a two lane interstate. Another car honked and woke me up. If I had drifted left would not be here now. Ever since then I try to be really careful and not drive fatigued.

I came up on a Cherokee rollover this past summer and the A and B pillar had crushed down. Guy was fine though, had to crawl out through the busted liftgate window. FYI, if at all possible when pulling up on an accident, leave the occupants in the vehicles. Would hate to make a neck or back injury worse by moving someone when they don't need to be moved.

i'm surprised by how willing you all are to admit that you've done something as dumb as to actually fall asleep at the wheel.

SHEESH.

#14 ·
I'll take a stab at this and say he didn't intend to do that. He was just honest enough to admit it. I bet he learned his lesson better than if he was just called 'dumb' for it.

(It happens a lot more than you think. The older you get, the better the odds of it happening to you. Pray that you get through it ok and can have some youngin tell you how dumb you were to have done that)

There was this guy I knew who worked on an early morning TV show for a major network. After the show ended at 9am he drove home from Manhattan across the Tappan Zee Bridge. He fell asleep at the wheel. He was jarred awake and saw his hood up in the air, with flames coming out of his engine, as he hurtled BACK TOWARDS THE CITY on the other side of the bridge. His accelerator was jammed to the floor and a police car was chasing him AND SHOOTING AT HIM! His car crashed through the toll gate and finally stopped. Turns out when he fell asleep his car swerved to the left, crashing over to the other side and hitting a police car coming the other way, the accelerator got jammed and his car took off. The cops thought they had a suicidal nut case or people making a getaway and acted accordingly. He survived and didn't have to go to jail, but he got one hell of a bill for the toll gate! This is NOT a lie.

I never take anything Tasha says too seriously...she has a way with words...lol

LOL look at you calling me a "youngin". at least i'm not an idiot who risks the lives of others by allowing myself to fall asleep while DRIVING A CAR.

this is not the type of mistake where it's OKAY to make it once and then learn from it. you make the mistake, you potential become a murderer. no excuse.

boy, age really has NOTHING to do with wisdom.
i think people should be able to drive as fast as they please as long as they are being safe about it!
***************************
unfortunately, a lot of people are too stupid to know how fast they can drive safely so the rest of us must succumb to these annoying speed limit laws.
um, no. the patriot and compass are NOT station wagons. and i'm not saying that because it is offensive, i'm saying that because they are NOT.
*************************
THIS is a station wagon. PATRIOTS are not station wagons.

CALL IT A JEEP! but if anything else, there's no other proper name for it other than mini/compact SUV.
haha, why thank you! i do have a rather sarcastic personality. some people are easily offended by it
you don't see the difference? wow, maybe it's time for some new lenses and i mean that with all due respect.
oh i'm all for the pride thing, don't get me wrong! however i could really care less if other people want to do this or not i don't NEED to see pics of other peoples' patriots. it just seems to be such a HUGE deal on these forums. as soon as someone introduces themselves, everyone is like OMG SHOW US PICS LIKE RIGHT NOW. lol.
*******************
now if someone said "I JUST ADDED A WHOLE BUNCH OF MODS TO MY PATRIOT!!" in THAT case i would say SHOW MEEEEE.
just a quick question... what's the big deal about pics? is it something i'm not getting? i mean... patriots all look the same (give or take a few minor details)... haha. just wondering.
still... it seems like most of the time 4x4s end up going unused, like many posters have said. and like mitakuuluu said, it seems as though 4x4s give people a false sense of security, just another trap for consumers.
yes, it's very sad how we lie to our children about how great our heritage is. we celebrate pilgrims and indians and everything is happy go lucky. WRONG.
**************
thanksgiving should be celebrated as a memorial day for all the poor indians we wiped out with our vicious genocidal minds.

regardless... i hope you all enjoy spending time with your families
welcome bob! don't forget to post pictures!

just wait until winter comes... every single member on here will start posting snowy pics :)
love the pics! i bought mine in white because i've always wanted a white SUV... but now i slightly regret not getting the green... it's too unique. love it!
my name is Tasha and back in august i bought a white 2007 patriot limited and i've loved it ever since! it's so cute a friend of mine just told me about this forum so of course, i had to join.

here's my beautiful jeep, taken shortly after i bought it:

Thanks Darby, you saved me from wasting my time posting a msg in response to her earlier comment in this thread. I see now it would been a complete waste...:blah::doh:

Over the years, I have found myself drowsing off dangerously at the wheel sometimes. I usually let it happen two or three times before I wise up and then I pull over and let my seat back as far as I can get it, then stretch out and close my eyes. I have found all you have to do this for is five or ten minutes and it seems to be enough for me to "wake up" again. Don't take chances re falling off to sleep. It happens so fast that, if you don't wise up immediately, it will be too late to avoid an accident.

#25 ·
who said anything about sleep apnea, comas, or stroke??? don't put words in my mouth!

#22 ·
Actually Tasha, you're most accurate statement yet was

"boy, age really has nothing to do with wisdom" .

Then again, I never (nor did anyone else in the posts I saw) claimed to be wise.

But that's ok, I was 21 once so I know where you're coming from; even if you really have no clue where us older people are coming from when we say the things we say.

(ok, so I'm slow to learn. I promise no more posts on this subject, guys.)

#24 ·
wow, darbywalters... you sure care enough to spend all that time collecting my posts don't you? i consider that a compliment :D

i'm sorry but... the bottom line is that it is NOT okay to fall asleep at the wheel, and that's all i'm saying. if that makes me too "young" and "ignorant" then so be it. at least you won't see me causing accidents.

#27 ·
why yes i remember things i've learned in driver's ed. they also tell you to pull over if you're tired. HMMM :)

#29 ·
what asleep threads? clearly i can understand if someone has a neurological problem, however, they shouldn't be driving if they are well aware that they have sleep apnea. in fact, don't they take your license away if you do?

when someone is getting tired, they should pull over. if you do not, then you're being stupid. and if you KNOW that you're in danger of suddenly "losing consciousness" with absolutely NO prior warning whatsoever... don't drive a car!

#32 ·
is this sarcastic or genuine? sometimes it's hard to tell by words on a screen.

#34 ·
oh i said SOMETIMES it's hard to tell. i try to make my sarcasm very obvious when i type :D

#36 ·
alright you guys, well, it's been fun arguing. but to put it to rest, i just want to say i still love this forum and everyone on it. i wouldn't know a quarter of the things i know about my wonderful patriot if it weren't for you guys. so we can differ on our opinions when it comes to dangerous behaviors, but just wanna say... no hard feelings :D
