The first thing you should do is swap the tranny pan for one with a drain and install a drain spigot in the oil pan. Anything else you upgrade or replace depends on the model you have and your own preferences and needs. Buy the Haynes Manual for the Patriot and you can keep it in the vehicle to help you with breakdown emergencies on the road and whenever you feel like tinkering with something.

 

Or if you don't change the tranny pan, at least change the tranny fluid at half the suggested interval, i.e., 50-60,000 miles.
