Noob here. My patriot is needing a new transmission replacement. I have been looking at having it done locally and have been talking to a couple of different mechanics. Question is a few mechanics are stating that I make sure to get the right transmission. I am looking up salvage yards that seem to have the transmissions and showing them to be for AT, CVT, 2.0L (FWD) for example. However mechanics are still insisting that I make sure it's the right one such as spec comparison or something. Am I missing something? Do I need to be looking for a specific transmission part number to match and if so, how do I find out the exact transmission which is in my patriot besides the AT, CVT, 2.0L?

I would advise against a junkyard transmission. Many CVTs did not get the needed maintenance and have failed prematurely. A blown tranny may be why the vehicle is in the junkyard in the first place. I'd hate to see you go to all that trouble and expense only to be back where you started. You're better off with a factory rebuilt transmission. If you don't have the right transmission, you may have compatibility problems with the electronics. Cars aren't just mechanical anymore.
I sold my 2008 Patriot to a friend. He had that problem and it turned out to be a broken transmission mount.
