2012 Rear Dome Light Leak…

Well I thought (or maybe convinced myself) that water leaks we’re only going to be a problem for earlier model years, or Patriots equipped with sunroofs, but this afternoon I opened the lift gate on my 2012 Limited to discover a puddle of water sitting on the rubber cargo mat directly under the rear dome light.

Pictures attached, in addition to the puddle there was water droplets on the dome light itself, and the headliner around it was soaked. It’s worth noting that the recess for the flashlight appeared to be bone dry, so the water is coming out where the plastic dome light housing meets the fabric headliner.

It’s really discouraging seeing as I’ve only had my new Jeep for a month and it only has about 2200km on it (1400 miles). Although I suppose in some way it’s better for this to happen sooner rather than later while the vehicle is still under the bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Anyway, I have my first appointment at the dealer Monday morning (the car hasn’t even been in for its first oil change yet) and they are going to look at the problem. Turns out (and I confirmed this with two different Chrysler dealerships) that they outsource water leak issues to a company called LeakPro. One of LeakPro’s technicians will be coming to the dealership to look at the problem, as the dealership says they don’t have an in-house specialist for this because they don’t run into these problems enough…

Will post an update regarding this after my trip to the dealer on Monday…

Man Doogals, I'm very sorry to hear that. There is a guide on here from Firemothjoe oh how he solved this buy sealing the rubber ring around the washer fluid hose I believe. It had been happening as the rear door got used a lot and the rubber loosened or shrank. I wonder if yours isn't seated right since its new

At this point in the game Jeep should be ashamed of themselves. There has been enough recorded evidence of leaking on this vehicle during its 5 year cycle that this should have been taken care of years ago.

Doogals: I can almost guarantee you since you don't have a sunroof that the leaking is coming from one or more of the following 3 places:

1) rear washer hose (most likely culprit)
2) round plastic thingy to the left of the rear washer hose.
3) rear roof mounted satellite antenna.

I leaked from the rear dome light just like you and after putting down some silicone in these 3 places I've been bone dry for almost a year and we have had a lot of rain here in Toronto during this time.

Tell the dealer or water leak experts that this is where its most likely leaking.
Should you get your car back and these areas are not siliconed then do it yourself as its an easy job.

OMG again? I wonder how many more newer models will have leaks. Maybe time to start another poll by model year.

A shame to see this on a 2012, but not entirely surprising as this is still a "Daimler era" leftover due for replacement soon, and still suffers from the poor design and engineering that was prevalent at Chrysler under Daimler management!!

I'm sad to hear about a year 2012 model with leaks, but I've also been sad to hear the last several months that they are replacing the Patriot. It seems that Jeep just hasn't put the effort into marketing, and in some cases, workmanship to give the Patriot a solid reputation.

So I dropped the car off at the dealer this morning for them to look at the leak. The headliner had completely dried since the leak on Thursday but I was able to email the service manager pictures so they had a good idea of where it was.

Invoice says the problem was “rear roof upper back panel, lift gate hinges, and center grommet leaking water”. It was corrected by re & re the rear roof moldings and scraping out the old sealer from the rear roof seams, upper dust seams, and upper panel seams, then resealing them along with the lift gate hinges and center grommet.

Check out the pictures attached, I should have taken a closer look at the area before they did the repair because I’m not sure exactly what is different, maybe someone could confirm for me, but it looks like they basically covered all the welds with some type of epoxy and also packed the corners full of sealant. Because I don’t know what these areas looked like before the work was done, so some of the sealant could be the original from the factory. The dealer painted over the new sealant which I thought was odd.

Also, bonus points for anyone who catches the mistake they made shown in one of the pictures…

Here’s hoping it did the trick…

Looks like they left something a bit loose

I'm glad they took the time to resolve your issue (or attempt to), especially R&Ring some parts. Sounds like it was pretty hassle-free. Here's to hoping that solves it.

There's definitely more sealant on yours than mine now. Yeah, don't forget to screw that down... don't want the lift gate to get blown off on the highway :)

Got it from the dealer, part number is 82212646, Mopar US price is $49 ($65.60 in Canada) I got mine for $55.80.

It's a really great accessory and I thought the price was very reasonable - but most importantly without it I probably wouldn't have noticed the dome light leaking as the water would have been absorbed into the carpet, with the cargo liner I saw the water immediately after opening the lift gate.

Hey Doogals,

Did they pull the headliner off to determine that the water was coming from both sides of the roof seams and the back seam? Cuz if they didn't they are stabbing in the dark. That washer hose grommet wasn't touched and thats likely where the water is coming from. I hope this solves it for you but don't be surprised if she leaks again.:(

Man I really hated reading your post. My 2008 leaked thru the front dome light plus the back seat areas filled up with 2 inches of standing water on 2 different occasions. I was hoping they had this fixed by now so I purchased a new 2012 4x4 Sport WITHOUT the sunroof. Thankfully in the 3 weeks I've owned it, it's dry but I guess I should just keep my fingers crossed judging from your post. Good luck to you.

It will only do good for those who had to pay out of pocket for repairs (i.e. not under warranty). It might also help chrysler realize it is a good time to take a closer look at the issue for future vehicles.

I was part of a class action suit a few years ago for my Malibu (among other cars that had the same intake design) for a design flaw in the intake gasket which caused radiator fluid to leak, sometimes into the engine where it could mix with oil and ruin your engine. I had the same repair done 3 times (2 were under warranty). We won the suit and GM sent me a check for the repairs I paid for, including the rental I used while it was in the shop.

That being said, I think there is strong evidence to win a suit. Note: I am not a lawyer.:D

Last Monday I had my 2010 Patriot back for the 5th time to the dealer for leak issues. Twice for rear dome light leak which started a month after I bought it. Then, this year the rear hatch itself started leaking in various places. On the 4th visit, I actually printed the service bulletin and leak detection guide from this site and handed it to them. I have been more than patient! I wrote a letter to Chrysler customer assistance and got no response. They completely ignored me. As much as I love this thing, they may be buying it back - Lemon Law!

The lack of response from Chrysler is what pisses me off more than anything. There are hundreds of documented cases of these leaks. There is a service bulletin issued by Chrysler regarding these leaks. I asked the service manager on my 5th visit why won't Chrysler own up to this and do a recall. His reply was they probably do not consider it a safety issue. Possibly, but I disagree. Water leaking through electrical components (rear light) can be a safety hazard. Not a letter, not a phone call, not a thing from Chrysler. I am seriously considering pursuing my rights under Lemon Law. I love my Patriot to death and it would break my heart to give it back, but a brand new vehicle should not leak ever! Possibly they will let me keep the vehicle and get a cash settlement if that is an option. I will have to talk to a lawyer. I have been more than patient, but I will not be ignored! (As Glenn Close said so well in Fatal Attraction LOL!)

p.s. I would also like to add LeakPro is useless! That is the company my dealer uses as well. Last time (4th visit) all they did was slap some silicone on the right side of the hatch and that was it. They made a mess of my vehicle. glue all over my rubber cargo liner (which I paid a pretty penny for from WeatherTech) plus ruined the beach towel I had in the cargo area to catch the water. Not to say all LeakPro technicians are bad, but whoever worked on my Jeep last time was terrible! If they were any good it won't still be leaking right?
