2011 Patriot won't turnover in cold weather

My girlfriend just drove to Steamboat Springs, CO where we have double digit negative temps. It was driven this morning for about 20 minutes after being warmed up. The temperature has come up to about 10 degrees above 0 and the Pat won't turn over. When the key is turned, the engine wants to crank but it will continue to attempt cranking with no success. I don't have to touch the key for it to continue to crank as well. It cranks for about 15 seconds and then stops. I do notice a transmission icon and also what looks like a lightning bolt with a line on either side which shows up on the dashboard as the truck is cranking. I have disconnected and reconnected the battery with no further success. Has anyone else experienced a problem starting a Patriot in extreme cold? This doesn't appear to be a battery problem as lights, fan, etc. come on when the key is turned and the starter is cranking with no further response.

Blocked fuel lines? Did you let the tank run low at all, and maybe condensation formed inside the tank? Maybe frozen water could block the lines?

I am thinking along these lines too as the initial thought( could be anything however as wel all know ). Gas let get down to 1/4 or below in sub freezing temps, moisture in tank freezes blocking fuel delivery, vehicle won't start. See it here quite often which I why I always try and keep at least 1/2 tank of fuel when temps hit 20 and below.

Methyl Hydrate, lots of it poured into the fuel tank and a fill of fuel.
Plug in the block heater or otherwise get some heat into the block to help the starter and wait.

You have to wait for the gas line antifreeze to work its way through and for the engine to warm up. Keeping it out of the wind will help.

Patriots are sold in Alaska, northern Canada, all over the place where it gets real cold.
Alternately you could get towed into a heated garage or heated underground parkade and again wait because I'm going in with the frozen fuel line theory.

I tossed a bottle of Iso-HEET in the PAT's fuel tank last weekend. The PAT was not wanting to fire quickly a couple times last week when leaving work. Temps were/are in the single digits.

If it won't turn over, then it has nothing to do with fuel. It's about the battery and the oil. The battery might be low, combined with the below zero temp, you dont have enough voltage to turn over the engine. This is aggravated by using "dinosaur" oil. It will likely be fine once the temps warm up above 25 deg, or so. When you get the chance, switch to a good synthetic oil.
The icons on the dash are normal during cranking.
The engine continues cranking because of the "Tip Start" feature. Also normal.
The fans and lights will still work, even with a low battery. You just dont have enough amperage to crank the cold engine over fast enough, with that thick oil in it, to start.
The Pats sold in northern areas have a block heater installed from the factory. This serves to keep the oil warm.

This is a long shot but even your oil thickens in the cold and depending on the condition, it could cause it to not be able to crank! Even if your water antifreeze ratio is off it can freeze just enough to cause trouble!

I would also pull out that battery and get it tested under load

"It cranks for about 15 seconds and then stops."

Good point, Murman. It depends on how fast it cranks, though. If it's struggling to turn over or if its cranking along happily and doesnt fire. The original post said it wouldnt CRANK. The TipStart will let it TRY for about 10-15 sec.

"...the Pat won't turn over. When the key is turned, the engine wants to crank but it will continue to attempt cranking with no success."

I saw that too... Maybe it will crank/turnover, but will not fire/start/run... Who knows.

I got the impression it would crank ok but not start. I proceded under the assumption that the battery was fine. Sometimes it is very difficult to decipher what some folks post.

I had a similar issue this morning and also live in Colorado.
My Patriot started fine this morning and yesterday morning but after brushing the snow off my car and letting it warm up a bit the ETC light came on. I know that if you turn off your vehicle and then turn it back on it will usually go away. So I tried this and then my car wouldn't start!
Yesterday it took a few tries and this morning it took about 10 tries. Once it caught a little bit I had to rev the engine a bit to get it to stick.
Is this really just cold weather related or something I need to get checked out?
I'm used to living in Montana and we plug in our vehicles in the cold weather but these "new-fangled" vehicles don't require that, right?
