2.0 or 2.4 Big difference?

What's the verdict on the engines

from what I remember, those with the 2.0 aren't seeing that much difference in mileage. I think I remember some members reporting only a 1-2mpg better rating then most with the 2.4L. Hardly worth the HP/Torque numbers that you lose.

Almost 95% of my driving is city (Toronto) traffic driving. So 18-19mpg is decent. If you like to tow a few things I would say get the 2.4L.

Look at the V6 vs V8 Commander, or any vehicle. The smaller overworked engine is never as efficient as a more powerful engine that handles the load easily. The problem is keeping your foot out of that extra power.

A guy came into work one day. He had put a Chevy 350 into a Vega. He said he gets 35 MPG because the engine never needs to work to move that tiny vehicle.

From what I can tell, the biggest difference in the 2.0 and the 2.4 is the plastic cover that deadens the noise from the engine.

Some friends of ours have the Chrysler 300C (5.7L Hemi). Their highway mileage is about 20. Ours, with the 3.5 usually averages 23 to 24 over the exact same trip.

They do beat us off the line every time though, of course we pass more gas stations in the long run.........

You just have to ask yourself how much power is sufficient. Our 2.0 gets about the same mileage as the 300 while in the hills here - but when we get to East Texas (flat land) we get right at 30 m.p.g.

I have a 2.0 in my daughters 09.
It runs great most of the time and she's gotten a few speeding tickets in it, faster than she should have been going.
She doesn't off road or tow anything, but does a lot of high-speed highway driving and has never complained about keeping up with anyone else.
I hear the "Plenum" is a little larger and that the engine itself is about the same.
I don't even know if it's a regular option anymore or a special order.

I advised her to go for the larger one, but as usual, she ignored me.

I have the 2.0 and test drove a 2010 with a 2.4.
I could not tell a difference really. Maybe a tad less of a whine when it takes off.. But to the one who said only 1 to 2 mpg difference that is all that was advertised to be the difference in the initial specs.
Your suppose to get 2.4 mpg's if your 2.4 had a manual transmission using a 2.0 and a CVT these numbers are equal to a 2.4 with the manual.

Last time I looked I did not see the option to save $200 by going down t the 2.0 but I could have just not been looking. If I had it to do over again sure I d pick the 2.4 for another $200 but I m not losing any sleep either.

A big factor in this is I live where the land is flat and most places I go is flat. I know I might not be as happy if I was up in them there hills with some of you.

Some had previously suggested that the 2.4 would increase resale value

I too, 22-23 in the city. Just think about that for a second. All the stopping. Idling around, lane shifts, speed up slow down, and still 22 MPG.That is still 4 MPG better than my other Jeeps on the highway! When gas gets up around $4 I really have an appreciation for the Patriot.

The colors on the lots seem to appear somewhat different then online. For instance online Sandstone is one of the ugliest colors (to me) however on the road Sandstone looks quite good and upscale. Red and Blue look good online but on the road (again my opinion) they look rather toyish.

Mine is Silver and it has grown on me and I appreciate how it always shines even when it is dirty.

I wish I had Jeep Green and beige Interior

That's what I have and I like it! I especially like the top interior parts(Dash, doors, etc. being black with the "beige" (which looks more khaki to me) below.

I have the 2.0L CVT and it suits my purposes just fine. It handles like a car and gets great gas mileage (check my Fuelly) with 90% freeway daily commute and it's plenty zippy enough, you're speeding before you realize it. I like the smoothness of the CVT and going uphills is a breeze and no transmission shift jerks. I have no trouble in keeping up with or passing other traffic, even uphill. I don't go off road so didn't need a 4x4. Whether you want a 2.0, 2.4, 4x2, 4x4, is down to what you intend to use it for. For me I needed a commute vehicle with the capability of taking our dog and taking the family on camping trips or whatever. The Patriot does all that admirably, is easy to clean (especially after the dog) and looks good too. It's a great, economical vehicle and it's too bad that they're misguidedly going to stop its production - they don't know a good thing when they see it.

I'm getting 25-26 combined with the 2.0...The only difference from the 2.4 I also drove (see sig) is the 2.0 seems to downshift more for inclines. Otherwise, it keeps up with traffic very well, cruises 70 mph nicely at 2250rpm...just like the 2.4.

Wish I could have had another 2.4, but this one was well-equipped compared the '08 (nicer interior and color) at a good price. No complaints, but I hope the mileage will be better for next week's big trip up north.

I've never driven 2.0, but the 2.4 is decent.
I pull a pop up camper 12' (down) 1700#

I have a 5spd and get 30 mpg. when I pull the camper, I get 22 mpg.
spend the money and get the bigger engine.

I have never said, boy I wish I had a smaller engine (less power).....
