Engine Shaking/Vibrating bad, when idling

Hey all, I am experiencing a strange issue, where my Patriot will shake/vibrate really bad when in drive and sitting idle (like at a red light with the foot on the brake). If I place it in park, neutral or start driving the heavy vibration goes away.

Anyone else having a similar issue, or have any insight? I have a 2007 Jeep Patriot Limited with about 70k miles.

Thanks!!! :pepper:

It's been resolved. After I filed for Arbitration I received a call from Chrysler asking if I would let them have another dealer look at it. I agreed.

After a couple of trial-and-error repairs (k-frame and motor mounts) the biggest factor was them replacing the balancer unit inside the engine. Vibration is the nature of this beast, and I compared so many others to mine that there is a wide range found. As my wife says, they all sing the same song but some are louder than others.

I had to bring the vehicle back today to get the steering wheel centred, wasn't quite where I wanted it to be but there is enough of a reduction in vibration now that I can live with it since I still think it's an excellent vehicle.

There is not a TSB for the Patriots. Having the same issue with a 2009, has new balancer and all the motor mounts look good phisicly had them out to inspect took off the belt and it didnt change took bolts out of torque converter and it didnt change, replaced spark plugs and it didnt change removed the exhaust at the manifold and it did not change adjusted engine k-frame with no change although it has seemed to be less of a vibration now after reseting all the mounts and frame and replacing the balancer and plugs but as of right now i have no fix for issue

I have the same issue. It happens mostly at a red light in Drive w/ my foot on the brake; vibrating steering wheel, brake pedal, and now, I can hear the back seats buzzing too! It's smooth in Neutral and I've gotten to putting it in that gear at red lights.

I had two motor mounts replaced last April for an unrelated issue, and the transmission mounts also (two, I believe), so I don't believe that's it. I need to get it resolved soon cause it seems to be slowly getting worse.

I've had my '15 Patriot for 3 weeks. I swear it started doing this today...temperature dropped to single digits today and it seemed to clear up as the Patriot warmed up. Gonna keep an eye on it..if it continues...off to the dealer it goes.

Mine still did this when really cold. So back to the dealer I went. Of course when I took it in it was 50 degrees out and it didn't have the issue...they couldn't find anything wrong, no codes, no updates needed...

See now I knew this was going to happen..lol

They told me to put another 2000 miles on since it only has 1000 and see how it is then. Pfft...

Doesn't apply to me but I wouldn't be surprised to see one come out for the newer ones as well. I know I'm not the only one with a newer model with this issue.

The dealership repaired my Pat 4x4 last Friday. They replaced all three engine mounts and the problem has mostly disappeared; still a little vibration, but worlds better. It turns out that the mechanic who replaced them less than a year ago apparently didn't align one of them correctly, and it almost completely destroyed the rubber on the bottom one. Arggg. 175k miles, hopefully this will be the last time I need to replace engine mounts.

I've been having an intermittent vibration issue as well. Pretty sure mine is being caused by the runner control module. Only does it in gear while stopped, and has an occasional hesitation when accelerating normally. If I decide to give it a little more gas than normal, she seems to act fine. Planning on taking the intake off soon for a good scrubbing. Cleaned the RCM spring out several times, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Not sure if this is the cause of other people's issues, but it's worth looking into. I also found a link to a good YouTube video highlighting the issue on our engines and showing how to fix it.

Been having this issue for about 6 months. Very rough idle when stopped in drive. Goes away as soon as you move to neutral, reverse, park, or start driving again.

Have a 2008 Jeep Patriot 2.4L with 144k. Motor mounts checked out fine, changed plugs, air filter, switched to synthetic oil, used fuel injector cleaner a couple times. Nothing has made the issue any better or worse.

Really trying to keep from taking to the dealership and spending a ton. Anyone have any success?

Thanks y'all!

I have the same problem as everyone else. I just bought a new 2016 2.4L 4x4 Jeep Patriot with an automatic 6 speed trans and when the Jeep is sitting in drive with my foot on the brake it shakes. I have only 700 miles on it. I took it into the dealership and the sales associate said to me "give it 20,000 miles and it should fix itself" I couldn't believe he actually said that that to me! I proceeded to take it into the service department anyway and showed them and they took it and updated the computer and then said the Jeep Patriot is normal for that to do it cause there's no balancing shaft in it. I'm not a machanic. Idk what that is but to me it sounds like they didn't build these very well at all. The sales associate then took me to 3 other Patriots on the lot and we checked each one of those and they all did the same thing. To me, if you buy a brand new 2016 vehicle there should be no reason it should shake and vibrate! I went to the recall place that one of the members here said to goto and looked and it has a manaufactures communication stating that the longblock needs to be replaced due to a crankshaft imbalance causing the engine to vibrate. Wish I knew all of this before i signed that paper. Ugh.

So all seem to have the same issue and no real fix to the problem. It might be this or that, or the nature of the vehicle. Well I just got a 2014 Patriot Sport 2.4 yesterday. Vehicle has 55,000 miles on it and looked like the original spark plugs! Changed them and it made no difference with the rough idle. So I take it no one has figured out the problem with all theses vehicles since its been going on for a few years.

Glad I found this discussion! My dealer replaced my long block a few weeks ago (under warranty, long story) and when I got it back the engine vibrates LIKE CRAZY when stopped in Drive. My whole foot shakes!

First the shop told me it's the engine breaking in. (Uh huh...) Then a few days later I dropped it off and said something is definitely wrong. They called me back and said 3 motor mounts are bad and need to be replaced. $700 and change, including labor. I said, "You guys just had the whole engine out, why didn't you replace it then?" They said they didn't know the mounts were bad. And I said, "Well the problem wasn't there BEFORE you replaced the engine!" I think they screwed up during engine replacement and now they want me to pay for them to get back in and fix it.

Now I have a case open with FCA.

Agreed that the mounts probably were affected during the engine work, but, they likely would have failed anyways. There are four mounts, one on each side and front and back. They are a PITA to get to and I assume the $700 is mostly labor at dealership rates. Still, it's dumb to replace only 3 of the 4, plus, if they replace with OEM they will just fail again anyways. If you put in aftermarket mounts your odds are better. Also the statement 'they didn't know the mounts were bad' is completely ridiculous - because it is such a common problem. Even if they weren't specifically "bad" it would have been wise to change them while the motor was out.

The motor mounts are the weak part of the Patriot, I had shaking in Park and when I was stopped at a red light. I didnt realize that my front motor mount bracket was bent and not aligned with the mounting tabs. I ended up ordering the front motor mount for under $16 since I knew I wanted it replaced anyways. Had a mechanic hammer the bend out of the motor mount. I took the motor mount off and changed it myself, its the only one that is not a PITA to change out. My old motor mount even with only 30k miles felt too soft and not right. I changed it and even way better than before, I get no shake in Park, a very small amount in Drive when Im stopped but I'll take that over the shaking I had before. I wouldn't trust these mounts past 50k miles, the rubber surface is just not right and hard enough to withstand the engine after many miles. As for your $700 bill, yeah I could call that the dealership F-up and those mounts should have been checked especially with the engine out. Unless major issues arise, I wont take my Patriot to the dealer, they couldn't even tell me my steering fluid was low, when they did a 31 multi-point inspection, when I requested fluid checks.

I recently (at 77k miles, '07 with CVT) had shaky idle in park, horrible gas mileage, poor acceleration, bad misfires under load or uphill, ESC light coming on for no good reason putting me in 'limp' mode for a while, and the throttle position sensor lite even came on once. Parts Store code reader said replace the crankshaft position sensor. I just did for $13. and so far the shaking is gone, acceleration is like new, no misfires at all. I gotta find someone to reset my codes so the ESC doesn't act up and I think I'll have got it licked. FWIW, it was a lot easier for me to replace the CPsensor from underneath, rather than from above.
