With the advent of winter, I have been having the Tire Pressure Warning Light come on when its cold in the morning. After driving for a whil, the light goes out. I assume this is due to the expansion of the air as it warms up. What is the best cold tire pressure to keep it at while allowing for the expansion. The tires are the goodyear eagles that came on the stock model.

I believe those tires are rated 32 psi, do not rely solely on the TPMS, get a gauge you trust and check them cold yourself.
Somebody will chime in about ambient temperature changes but simply put 32 psi in 70 degree weather will not give you 32 psi in 30 degree weather.

It will change based on temps and altitude, but I can tell you that even here in Phoenix, I had to bump mine up. We're at 1000 ft elevation, and the coldest morning temps are about 40°F at the house.

I bumped up the pressure to about 38psi when it was 65° out. That stopped the light from coming on in the mornings.

Just did this the other night on my wife's Pat. I bumped them up to 35psi and the light went off about 1/2 mile down the road. We're in single digits here so we'll likely not have to worry about expansion too much until it warms up.

Sticker on the door for inflation on the stock steel rim 16'' tires was 35psi cold if I recall correctly. (4X2 Sport 5 speed if that helps)

Here in Spokane the temps been between 6 and 12 degrees at three thoulsand feet. My pressure droped from 35 to 28 overnight the light came on in the morning and did not turn off after driving and the pressure returned to 33. I pumped them up to 35 and the light did not go away. I called the service department at my Jeep dealership and they sugested 37 lbs and said that is what seemed to reset the warning light.

I have been having a similar challenge. Where I am we can see temperatures of -40.

I have found setting the tires to the correct pressure when cold usually provides enough margin to keep the lights off.

I would strongly suggest against filling them to the MAX rating when cold. This would then mean when the temperature warms up the tire pressure would climb above the MAX rating.

Hey guys, I am having some issues with mine. Actually since day one i have had this problem. My low air pressure light comes on and if i dont put air in that tire within a few days my tire will be totally flat however there is no leak in the tire, no puncture nothing. It doesnt matter if its summer or winter it happens weekly. I have asked the dealer to look into it and they have no idea what it could be and just suggested buying new tires...That isnt gonna work for me! Any of you have this problem? It's only this ONE tire that has the issue i havent had any other one go low or flat oin the 2 years i have had my patriot.

Thanks!

sounds like a cop out by your dealer, ask around and take it to a tire shop that one of your friends trust. they should be able to find the source of the leak for you.

Check the tire Valve for tightness. Unscrew the black cap and inside the valve stem you will see the valve which , if loose, will let the air out gradually from that tire. You will need a valve tool to tighten it up....

The other source of slow leaks (other than a nail thru the tire!!) is rust on the rim so that the tire bead does not seal properly. For this, you will have to remove the tire, and then check the rim carefully for rust..then clean it well if rust is found. Remount the tire, have it balanced, and you should be free of air leaks!!

:)

This. Don't ask a dealer, they sell tires but aren't all that knowledgeable about them. Go to a tire shop. My parents had a couple front tires with slow leaks; turned out the wheel rim had oxidized slightly, allowing air to leak. A cleaning of the rim later and they're airtight. It sometimes takes a pro to nail these down.

And for the record, air pressure in a tire will drop at roughly 1psi for every 10 degrees F of a drop. You want to set the pressures to the recommended level (on the sticker in the driver's doorframe) when cold (BEFORE driving).

Hey guys.

I'm having a similar problem as well. My front driver's side tire is flashing low tire pressure so I fill it to match the others that aren't blinking and it wont go away.
as well as my Tire Pressure Monitoring Telltale Light won't turn off...

Any idea?!

The MAX rating cold allows for expansion when hot. The TPMS is fairly sensitive. I had mine light off after about 300 miles. I checked the pressure with my hi-tech, Radio Shack digital guage and found the pressures to be between 28 and 36. (Gives ya a bad feeling about dealer prep, don't it?) So, knowing everything like I do, (So my girl says...) I adjust them all to 32, because thats what these little baby Goodyears should be, right? Wrong. Light wouldn't go off. 2 days the light wouldn't go off. Checked them again. Right on 32 still. So, on the advice of my wise and tolerant girlfriend, I read the manual, then check the tag on the door. 35 psi, not 32. Sigh... Light went out only 3 blocks down the road, hasn't come on since. I gave my girl the standard Dog and Pony show about ambient temperature and guage variations. She just smiled. So much for "If ya can't baffle 'em with brillance, befuddle 'em with bullcrap".

Checked my tires at 65 F and they read 35psi. A month later in a cold spell of 19F they read 31 psi. Radials seem to be very temperature sensitive. As far as losing air without hearing a leak, spray the tire and rim slowly with a water/soap or Windex solution. Take your time and spray the valve stem too( with valve cap off). I bet you will see soap bubbles somewhere. Make sure to spray the rim inside edge also. It maybe corrosion or a defective rim. This is the easiest way without a tank to submerse the tire. That is what tire shops do. They spray first and if no luck, they will submerse the tire.

pressure warning

Just bought my 2014 Patriot. After 2 weeks the pressure warning came on. All of the tires look fine. How much of a change does there need to be for the warning to come on? 1 lb? It's hell to pay for bells and whistles that don't work!
