Hey all,
I have an '09 FDI with 2.4L CVT.
Over the last few months I have noticed a significantly more pronounced "whirling" noise from my engine. It is quite noisy and sounds like what I would think a CVT issue would be, but I'm pretty sure it's engine noise, as it is still present in park and increases when I give it gas.

Any ideas what could be causing this and how to quiet this thing down?

thanks!

Alternator OAD pulley.

Yep, good call. Had it in for my 5 yr powertrain inspection and it was failing alternator bearings.
It's not the bearings in the alternator, it is just the bearing in the OAD pulley. No need to replace the entire alternator, just the $45 OAD pulley on the alternator.

Thanks - just saw your writeup on the pulley removal.

I like this vehicle - good ride, decent fuel economy, great in snow, etc, but I'm pretty disappointed how Chrysler really "cheaped" it out. 70K miles and I've had all the ball joint problems, bad wheel bearings, this pulley, and to top it off I went to change my cabin air filter and discovered there was never one installed from the factory. Guess that would have cost them an extra $10.

Yes, it is a cheap vehicle, but realize it is built to a price point. No other manufacturer had a $15,000 4x4 SUV. Just think about that starting price point for a second and all of the base equipment and drive train components that entails. And only the Limited versions came with the cabin air filter.

Like I said, I like the vehicle, but I would have paid an extra few hundred bucks for better ball joints and bearings. That stuff ends up driving up owenership cost in the long run.
