I went to Toyota's web site and built an FJ 4x4 with "option C" (the middle one) and no accessories. It cost $28,940. (click, enter your ZIP code, wait for page to load, close the window and then click again, and you will see my results.)

I then went to Kelly Blue Book's web site to find the "trade in" value of a 1 year old FJ 4x4 similarly equipped to what I built, with 15,000 miles in "good" condition. The trade in value is $16,650. See for yourself.

So in 1 year, the FJ dropped $12,290. 42%. $1,024 per month. So much for holding its value.

The FJ body ripping in two is remarkably similar to the problem with the Tundra's tailgate folding. This is one of the reasons Consumer Reports kicked the Tundra off its recommended list.

As PickupTruck.com explains:
Owner accounts in the TS discussion thread recall similar usage scenarios before the metal separation was noticed. Paint and metal cracking appeared after loading heavy objects into the backs of the trucks, using the tailgates to balance and assist in cargo ingress and placement. Some of the pictures show extreme deformation of the tailgate sheetmetal.

It's amazing the rate of decline in Toyota quality these past five years.
It happens to anyone who wants to produce lots of things. You must relax tolerances to be able to make more. Sometimes questionable parts make it through, and if you end up with several questionable parts that are all interrelated you get failure.

I can't believe that about the Tundra and FJ. A girl I know just bought a Matrix today. The one with the AWD. I wonder how that will hold up for her.

It truely blows my mind how nobody knows about these problems still...toyota must have paid a pretty penny to keep this hush hush, or they are sleeping with the right media companies to have other things be more important, than stuff like this to the "mighty" toyota

FJ what??? Who cares the Pat is overall a much better veh. and a MUCH BETTER VALUE. If you want a FJ Im sorry but you got money, just filling up the gas alone would be my monthly pat pmt. (except for the water leak) I have no complaints about my Pat. All I do is brag about it. My brother (13yrs old) called it the bat mobile. There are little secrets all over...Stearing wheel radio controls, tire pressure monitoring, navigation, sunroof, automatic and stick in one, compass, rear reclining seats, auto rear dimming mirror, fold down rear speakers, built in garage door opener, sliding visor, etc....... Ever where you sit is a surprise.

JEEP RULES....

would you believe that many people over here when they see mine they think...."oh you got a hummer....and i say nooo its a real car....a JEEP"

That is a pretty serious insult. You better put those emblems back on. ;)

When the Hummer first came out there was a kit you could buy, a fiberglass front end to make your CJ or Wrangler look like an H1.
It was in the JC whitney catalog for about 6 months and then it was gone. I never saw one. Dismal failure. Jeep people are a special lot. We love our Jeeps.

I drove a FJ as a rental for a week. It drove nice, but the two big downfalls IMO were 1) a HUGE blind spot and 2) terrible (~13 mpg) gas mileage.

That body rip pix is an eye opener. I hope that Toyota is taking care of that for their customers.

I saw a yellow one at a jeep dealership in Warsaw IN a couple years back. I did not like it at all! I asked the dealer salesman why they did it and his answer was that some people liked the look. I have not seen one since so there must not be vary many people that liked it. As i remember it had a complete Fiberglass replacement of the hood, grill and front fenders that tilted forward to gain access to the engine. Do not understand why anyone would do that to a Jeep? The Hummer looks ok for a Hummer but I have no desire to own one.

Maybe they will come out with a replacement fiberglass body for the Patriot that looks like an FJ so the people so sold on their better resale value and higher quality can have a really great vehicle that looks like a pile of c--p but has the Jeep quality and durability. I was going to end with "LOL" but the thought does not make me feel like laughing.

I would suspect that as Toyota's quality continues to five with the increase in production, that their resale value too will go down.

Two things:

Why are we comparing the Jeep with the FJ? Come on, what a waste of time.

FJ:
  • Is $10K+ more that the Patriot
  • Much larger in size
  • Uses premium fuel
  • 4.0 L V6 engine

Patriot:
  • Less expensive
  • Smaler than the FJ
  • Uses regular fuel
  • 2.4 L V4 engine

And regarding buying American, next time you fill your gas tank think hard about that one. The US imports twice as much oil than it drills for locally.

When it comes to the oild, you don't have a choice, but with a car you DO have a choice where the profits go.
