Does anyone know if the oil needs to be changed after the first 1,000 miles or so? (We bought the car new, and just nearing that mark.)
Back in the day when you actually had to break in an engine the advice was to do a quick change to remove metal filings from the engine that rubbed off during the break in period.

Today's engines are cast, molded, machined to much better tolerances. The old advice no longer holds true.

Manual doesn't ask for an oil change until 13,000 km. 8,000 miles.

does that make me happy...no, not really.
Did I change my oil early...not really. What I did was change my oil filter early, add a liter or so of oil and carry on til the oil change monitor asked for an oil change.

People who change modern oils in modern engines on an accelerated program absent any mitigating circumstance like racing, hard off roading, lots of fully loaded towing, etc are just pumping money for no good reason.

to the OP:
My go to with a new to me used vehicle is to replace any and all fluids, belts, hoses, filters, etc.
Then I know from where I am starting.

There is an oil life monitor that does a pretty good job of determining when to change your oil. Now that I do mostly short trip driving, my average change interval is about 2500-3000 miles. Prior to my current job, I was commuting for 45 minutes to an hour or longer and the interval was 5300-5800 miles (this is on a 2008, which had a 6000 mile or 6 month interval according to the owners manual).

You can change it earlier of course, just realize you can't reset the monitor until it goes off, so at some point, you'll see the Change oil message show up in the odometer window.

I do mine once a year since i drive about 3k miles per year

Do you all recommend getting the oil change at the jeep dealer or no? Whats the average price to get it done at the dealer
if its under warranty, it means every oil change is documented by the dealer. I got my first year of oil changes free, and I can always find a mopar coupon that gets me an oil change fore $20 bucks at the dealer, which is as cheap or cheaper than most places.
