So to follow up with my last post. I hit a telephone pole with my Patriot going 40+ mph. The car did a remarkable job of keeping me safe and walked away without injury. Just very sore. The car is at $13,000 in damage so far. They are doing a break down on the car to see what else is broken. They think it will be totaled, but not positive yet. The engine moved and the engine mounts are broken. They are thinking the tranny is shot and if that’s the case it will probably be a total. What I need help with is deciding what I’m going to replace it with. I was very happy with the Patriots performance despite a few very minor things in the beginning and am extremely satisfied with how well I was protected in the accident. I called a Jeep dealer and they won’t budge on the prices of the Patriot, but I would get the $2.99 gas. Which is at $4.40 a gal. where I am now, but is only an $800 per year savings. They have INCREDIBLE deals on the Grand Cherokee and the dealer told me to come down or look on their website for the car I would want and take $10,000 off the sticker!!! They just came out with the new incentives today. $7000 off Laredo model and $8000 off Limited for Grand Cherokee. PLUS the dealer is giving me an extra $3000 on top of that. That’s $10-$11000 off sticker!! That’s crazy! Payments for a Patriot Sport with rims and tires, sound group and sunroof would run the same monthly payment wise for a Grand Cherokee Laredo with Sunroof, leather, remote start, my GIG, backup camera, Boston Acoustic, plus TONS of other stuff. So I’m really leaning towards the Grand Cherokee, but I REALLY want to hear the opinion of as many people as I can on which you think would make the most sense. I really appreciate all your help. Thanks!

Grand for the drand cherokee

Im actually stepping down from a grand to the patriot due to the gas costs, trust me it is a great vehicle but only when gas was 2 a gallon cause most of my driving was city and at 13.4 per gallon it hurts quick. figure its almost 2 fillups per 1 to the partiot so if you drive 300 miles a week or 15 miles per gallon, thats essentially 4 tank fulls at 20 gallons a pop or at $4 $360 per month or 4320 a year vs. 216 per month or 2600 per year well 1720 difference for the next say 5 years to pay off the grand comes to 8600 or there abouts. so yes it is a great deal but remember thats off sticker not invoice too, so that extra 3 grand was already built in, so if you can get the grand for about 23k or 24k total costs for the 5 years will be 8600 more than the same patriot 4x4 limited. If you do mostly highway driving then the gap is much less but then again these numbers are on a V6 I am quite sure a V8 will guzzle even more. Good luck

Consider how many miles you put on your car annually and calculate the fuel cost using mpg of each model. The G.C. will cost more to drive gas wise I am sure. Add the difference to the cost of the G. C. and than compare the cost of the two cars. Also the Patriot because of the gas milage will most likely hold it's value better than the G.C. especially if gas prices continue to rise. also you will be in line for a 2009 Pat if you have to order what you want on it. I bought my 2008 3 weeks ago and could not order one due to their changing over to the 2009 model. Good luck either one will be a Jeep and thats what it's about.

Thanks everyone for your help. Figuring out gas prices at $4.40 gal. and at 35,000 miles a year it will cost me $7000 a year for the Patriot and $9060 for the Grand Cherokee. So over a course of 5 Years it will cost me $10300 more for gas in the Grand Cherokee. I must say it is still tempting to go with the Grand Cherokee. Maybe gas prices could go down? I doubt it, but wishful thinking. I called to find out when the 2009 Patriots will be out and they are saying sometime in September. I think it’s best to go with another Patriot, but the Grand is VERY tempting. I have had several Grand Cherokees and had great luck with all of them. I’m thinking it’s best to go with another Patriot though.

Being a Patriot owner aside for a moment, I have to admit that you would not regret passing on the GC.
Just one question though..most dealers I know of around here will at least deal a LITTLE bit..(maybe not tons, but something anyhow), is there a chance you can check other dealers to see if they could cut the cost any at ALL? Even knowing you plan on checking other dealers may give your first dealer a change of heart. It sure couldn't hurt.
Good luck with your choices!

When we were shopping for my girlfriend a car, we were looking at a 2004 GC special edition with the V8. The salesman swore up and down that he had the same car and averaged 28-30 mpg, of course i asked him where he bought his stuff and if i could meet his dealer:)

I think you are all right, it’s probably best to go with the Patriot. I will try other dealers to see if I can bargain with them. I think this dealer really wanted to move the Grand Cherokees because he has so many of them. The problem is trying to find one. I keep searching and there are not many Patriots around here at all. I would prefer a 2009, but I don’t know about waiting until September.
