ive had my 2008 jeep patriot FDI for about 7 months now...about 10,000 miles already and after a recent mudding trip a few months back, my jeep started acting funny. first my gas guage didnt work and it was on empty even if i put gas in it. then my check engine came on. i went to the dealership and they had it for about 3 days and they fixed the gas guage and got rid of the check engine light...well i drove it and thought it was normal until i had to refill in gas again and in which case gas wouldnt even go in. i took it immediately to the dealership..frustrated because it had been in there for 3 days. its been in the shop for about 10 days now. and just got a call that it needs a new fuel tank...? anyone know whats going on? i went mudding once and how could that even mess up the fuel tank

Chrysler was having the same type of problem with the new 2008 minivans. I never did hear what was causing it but the same thing (empty tank would not take in gas, etc). I believe it had something to do with an internal vent or something like that, defective from the supplier, intermittently plugged? This sounds so much like it I am curious to find out if this is the same thing (maybe it is the same fuel tank design or supplier).

So i just called the dealership and its in for ANOTHER 5 days. they just ordered all the parts from milwaukee so it takes about 3 days to get here. and all they told me was that inside the gas tank there is a thing that catches? and when i put gas in it it wouldnt catch. which in case make no gas going in. they pretty much ordered a whole new fuel system including a new fuel tank, meter, etc. etc.

and patriot cruiser i think this might have to do with the same tank supplier becaues its either that or a really big coincidence that i happen to almost sink my patriot the prior two weeks before all this happened.

and craig i really like your limited chrome trim on the side. do you have the limitied editoin or did you buy it aftermarket?

newjeepgirl, i actually tried to ask for a bigger tank but unfortunately we'll have to stick with the 13 gallon one.

I guess if you want more gas, you might need one of those baskets where you can strap on a few external tanks (ET)

Something similar happend to my wifes car. We would fill it and the gauge would not move. After about 5 miles it would begin to move to full. I know some are saying that it was because I would squeeze that extra gallon into the filler hose, but not the case. One of the sensors went bad in the tank causing the problem. When we went to pick it up, it had the exact same problem, took it back and was informed that when the tech lifted the tank back into place, he kinked the return hose which cause a very similar problem. Ever since, she has been reading fine.

Keep us posted on how things go.

When I added my trailer hitch I took a look at the gas tank. Perhaps something simply was jiggled when you were mudding despite the skid plates being there.

My guess would be an internal baffle breaks loose and interfere's with the fuel gauge sender float, possibly causing the float to block the fill pipe? or the baffle itself blocks the fill pipe.
