I wanna get some feedback on the Temperature Display. I have the base model...(no EVIC)..however I still have a Temp. Display. Mine was reading like 94F then 1/2 mile down the road it dropped 10 degrees or better ! What gives ??? This thing is measuring outside temp. right ? Where is the sensor located ? Does engine temp. affect it ? I just wondered what others know about this. I rented a Chevy Cobalt recently that had the same feature and it also gave radical readings at times. Tell me what ya know.....THANKS !

my old f-150 did the same thing with 10 to 20 ft elevation change

I've noticed mine changed a few degrees too (in celcius) once I get moving, I'm not sure why it does it tho. The sensor is mounted in the front, under the bumper, it's a little black thing.
I find that once I'm on the road it is really accurate, usually bang on what the radio is telling me.

It may be reading the hotter air coming off the pavement/driveway when first started. Mine does the same thing. Once moving for a few minutes it show a more accurate reading (I just noticed this happen yesterday leaving my brothers. It read 92 when I first jumped in, then a few blocks down the road read 84 which was about right. It had been sitting in the street for several hours during the day).

I noticed that in the winter the initial display on starting was the same as when I shut the engine off. The coldest morning was -32C. When I left work it was much warmer but the thermometer still said -32. When I started driving it changed to reflect an accurate temperature.

If you have a convertible, you no doubt have experienced this first hand. Temperatures fluxuate quite a bit when you drive. Even over a short distance. Especially if there is no wind, cool air will settle into a valley or low spot.

I have found mine to be very accurate according to the temperature I hear on the radio when driving to work.

As others have mentioned the sensor is located on the lower part of the front bumper.

I'm glad to see it wasn't just me. Mine does need a little adjustment period after taking off. However once it is adjusted, it is acurate. This is the wife's daily driver and she said it was spot on with the radio. We just had not before noticed the sudden big adjustment. Thanks to all who chimed in ! :)

Based on what I am reading in this thread coupled with my own experience I think there must be something going on with some of the temperature sensors in the Patriot or maybe with the relevant computer in the vehicle that reads the sensor and displays the output?

I've had the problem described by Robot Boy where the temperature readout remains stuck at what it last read when the vehicle was last shut off. I had the sensor replaced once already under warranty because it was intermittently taking more than 20 minutes to change the displayed temperature. Got in the Patriot today to go out for lunch and the readout said it was 63F. No way. More than 20 minutes later the readout finally matched the actual outside temperature of 81F.

My question is whether the temperature shown on the EVIC display is also one of the temperatures the engine control computer is using to make decisions about engine operation in connection with the temperature of the coolant/engine? If so that could mean poorer performance or impact gas mileage over the 20 minute period.

Looks like it is back to the dealer for me. Something's not right. I haven't looked at the service manual to see how the sensor is wired. Instead of a sensor problem could it be crappy vehicle control computer programming getting into too long a loop before checking sensor or displaying the result???

Taking more than 20 minutes to change the temperature readout is not acceptable. I can accept maybe a couple of minutes for the sensor to detect the actual temperature within a degree or two but an 18 degree F difference for 20 minutes - no way. Mike

I think I have found a connection: I left my reasonably cool garage headed for the gas station--having only 1/4 tank. OAT (outside air tem) guage read 73F. Time and Temp sign on the way to gas station read 93. Hmm, 20 degrees difference! Stopped and gassed up. Now with a full tank, and pulling out of gas station lot, OAT crept up slowly to the 93+/-. Conclusion: OAT doesn't work properly with less than a full tank of gas!

Draw your own conclusions!

Temp seems to take about 10 min to "true up". Was about 94 F last week and when I started up the temp showed around 70. I knew it was clearly wrong, but after about 10 min. of driving it climbed quickly and then settled near the correct temp. Not sure why the delay in getting a true reading in this digital age. For me it seems to take about a 10 min. window before it is accurate.

There may be a time interval between temp updates, but it might also be a distance traveled interval.

I remember reading a thread about this on a Jeep Wrangler forum once. The temp wasn't updating at all when they were off-road rock climbing or whatever, because the Jeep was only going a couple of miles an hour on the trail and hadn't gone a sufficient distance for the temp sensor to update. Apparently it was how the software was designed. Don't know if this would apply to the Patriot or not.

It seems like mine needs to run for a good 15 minutes before I get a real reading. It's sorta funny, it will be 90 degrees outside but when I turn on the motor, it reads like 70.

I am accurate within 3 to 5 mins. I park underground (cool and dry) and by time I get my cup of Hortons in the morning a block away the unit is bang on.

EVIC read 119F when leaving the office. I don't think it was 119F today. It evened out to 100-ish in a few 5 minutes or so.

Maybe "Jeep" stands for something....like FORD...fast on race day...fix or repair daily....NAVY...never again volunteer yourself....PONTIAC...(we won't go there)...

Not sure how bad fit & finish...poor materials...and poor design fits into it...but maybe it's just a Jeep thing. It's not supposed to work as designed.

New advertising slogan..?..

No, it doesn't work. It's a Jeep thing. Now gimme your money.

Bitter? Party of one....your table is ready Oh...'scuse me.
