Another model is the new Dodge Journey. I tested out a Dodge Journey a few days ago. It had the 2.4 engine and I was most impressed by its performance. The brochure they had on it did not give many of the specifications.
Heh... I saw one for the first time last week, I was picking up my Patriot from the dealership and as I was about the leave the lot, someone test driving a Journey was pulling in and the salesperson pointed at me (the Jeep, of course ;)) and they both stared at the Jeep as I was leaving.

Good or bad? Who knows... ;)

I agree that the Commander and the Grand Cherokee are aimed at the same sector of the market, the 3rd row of seats being the only big difference between the two.
I think they have already decided on scrapping the Commander.

Jeep needs 4 vehicles...Grand Cherokee (extended to offer three row option), Wrangler, Liberty, Patriot (sorry but compass isugly as sin even with rallye package.)

Dodge needs Avenger, Journey (replace caliber as fuel effcient crossover), Challenger, Caravan, Ram (gotta have a truck but the dakota doesnt hardly sell at all anymore so drop it), Charger (gotta have full size car of some manner), Durango, Viper (gotta keep the competition going, especially since chevy now has a super corvette aka the ZR1)..thats 8 vehicles down from12

I don't think the Caliber should be merged with a Journey for a couple of reasons. One being price point. The Caliber is the cheapest model Dodge offers. They aren't going to eliminate it. It also gets far better mpg than what you can get in the Journey.

The most recent Motor Trend speculated the Compass and Commander, as well as the Durango and Dakota would be cut. It also mentioned a car or two, but I didn't pay as much attention to them. It may have included the Aspen, I can't recall correctly. I'll look it up when I get home if I remember. :)

I would keep the Commander, and scrap the Grand Cherokee...it's a bit old and tired despite numerous facelifts. Then also keep the new Liberty (Cherokee in Europe) and the Patriot and Wrangler.

Why would they get rid of the Dakota?

I think the Compass gets a redesign and then is re-branded as a Chrysler. Chrysler also just cut a deal with Nissan so you can expect a new compact in 2010 and a possible re-position of the Caliber.

It's more than the car itself when making these decisions. Since the Caliber, Compass and Patriot roll off the same line, costs for each are almost identical. Cutting any of the three is going to cut volume and increase costs because the overhead will not change. They make these decisions based on marginal costs not cost per unit.

I did hear one very interesting rumor. CRX may be developing a compact pickup based on the MK platform. I somehow doubt that, but there might be a shred of truth to it in the possibility of a new design to replace one of the three.

Why would they get rid of the Dakota?
Small/medium pickup market is dying, and the Dakota is not really much smaller than the Ram these days.
I really liked my '99 Dakota Club Cab but it seems anymore people either buy the fullsize brutes or opt for an SUV.

Come to think of it, I rarely see any new Ford Rangers being driven down the road. You figure with fuel the way it is, people would want to be able to have a truck, yet get better fuel economy.

I kind of like the Compass and would hate to see it go, but I can see why they would get rid of it. I think in the 90's they had three cars that looked the same and I never could understand why they built so many of the same thing. I think the cars were the Chrysler Cirrus, Plymouth Breeze, and Dodge Stratus. The ex-wife had a Breeze. The biggest P.O.S. car I have EVER drove.
I loved when they did that! If you pay enough attention you'll notice every mid size GM car from the same time frame looks almost just like a Buick Celebrity.
They got this big idea that if they resold the same car with different names they wouldnt have to design new ones and how they screwed the buyer is if you wanted the expensive car with the CD player and the power windows you bought the buick but if you wanted the cheap car with the AC Delco tape deck, metal seatbelts that burned you when the car was in the hot sun and hand crank windows you went for the Chevrolet.

my old boss told me (he used to make videos for pontiac when they had the Fiero) that the government stepped in and said "Hey.. wait a second.. what the hell do you think your doing??? its the same car!" and I guess they put an end to that.

I think the old Liberty was the ugliest thing Jeep ever made, and teh new Liberty is a much better looking vehicle as it no longer looks like a retarded turtle rolling ddown teh street.

As for not killing one model of the Jeep... If you made just teh Caliber and Patriot, and not the compass.. the sales would drop less that 1%. Those who would have bought the Compass more than likely would just move over to buy a Patriot.

i liked the old liberty, however the new liberty and commander have the same exact body lines as the patriot, they would look better with the patriots headlights and grill. drop the caliber too, make a dodgified Patriot mini-nitro

I am not sure they will drop the Compass. Keep in mind they all (Caliber, Compass and Patriot) use very similar parts, components and body structure. The cost to keep all three in production should not be too much.

But then again, I have been wrong before !

I doubt that. There are a lot of people that do not like the boxy Cherokee/Patriot/Commander/Liberty styling, especially women. Both the Patriot and Compass have polarizing styling. Love or Hate. Few like both. Yes, they are so much the same mechanically and interiors for about the same money, but people are superficial.

i agree with everyone who said it would be STUPID for chrysler to drop one of their most fuel efficient vehicles. and it seems like having the compass brings in other consumers who normally wouldn't even consider buying a jeep because of its non-jeep exterior look.

i have a feeling all those rumors about chrysler dropping the compass are just that, RUMORS. rumors that were blown entirely out of proportion.

but only time will tell.
