After lurking here for awhile and posting some questions to help guide our decision, todaywe just brought home a new 2014 Patriot Sport in Mineral Grey, 4x4, manual, power value group and all weather group upgrades.

I had to pick it up in Bremerhaven Germany and drive back home to Belgium where I am currently stationed...about 400 miles. What a slog.

The car drove very nicely but I noticed a couple of things along the way:

1. The speedometer is on the left and the tachometer is on the right behind the steering wheel...anyone else think that seems backwards? my eyes seem to be trained to look to the right for my speedometer.

2. High beams can only be switched on if the headlights are switched to the on position but wont come on with the daytime running lights except if you pullback to put them on briefly...the nice thing about daytime running lights is you don't have to worry about shutting off the lights as they shut off with the car...but then you need to switch modes if you want your brights on...anyone know a way to override the daytime running lights if one does not want to drive with them on?

3. There is no flap at the top of the gas fill tube...I thought this was odd as all the vehicules I have ever owned or rented had a spring loaded flap at the top/mouth of the fill tube behind the gas cap that I assume is to block the hole to keep debris from entering...anyone else notice this? or is mine missing this flap?

4. The exhaust tip is cut at a funky angle instead of being cut as a flush circular tube.

5. There is a silver device mounted atop my air filter box with two leads connected to it...not sure what this is.

6. Is there a way to disconnect the shoulder belt for the middle rear passenger seat for when the seats are folded down? I could not figure out how to do this and did not see anything listed when I gave the owners manual a quick look.

7. I am hoping gas mileage improves as the engine breaks in.

8. The factory all-weather mats kinda suck.

9. Anyone else think the sideview mirrors on the 2014 seem kinda boxy looking?

The car is great otherwise and I was really impressed how well it drove. I was told to keep my speed no higher than 120 KPH for at least the first 500 miles so it sucked driving the car on the Autobahn and not being able to open the throttle. I am sure we will have other occasions as the German boarder is not too far away.

BTW...if I buy a mopar hitch receiver does it just bolt in place or does it need to be welded too?

Thanks to everyone who answered my past questions as we were shopping/deciding. I think we made a good choice and look forward to continued lurking with the hopes of being able to contribute at some point as the miles of experience with this vehicle rack up.

Cheers,
-Z

That middle belt is driving me crazy noticed it today and can't figure it out. My exhaust is cut weird too. Gonna have to buy a decent looking tip for it.

Congrats!

Just went over 1K on our 2014! Love it

1. Yes I though this was backwards! Took me awhile to get used to it but am ok with it now.

6. I have not done this but looks like there is a slot here u can slide a key or screwdriver into and release the belt.

7. MPG is getting better as it is getting broke in. Getting 22MPG combined right now.

9. Yes boxy but not as bad as a Wrangler's

That link brings me back to this thread. Let me know how it goes when you try to get it unbuckled.

2. Just run with your lights and fog lights on, it looks cooler.

5. This is the ECU, it is the brains of the engine. Do not disconnect it.

6. Just bring the seatbelt over the right headrest and then fold the seat down, it stays pretty much tucked to the side of the car. Just don't forget to bring it back over the headrest if you need a third person.

Doh, I copied the wrong URL...it was almost 3am.

What the thread discussed was that there is a slot that you can insert the tab from one of the other belts into to get the little black device to release and then I guess you can retract the belt to the overhead in the cargo area.

I will take a look later today to see if this is will actually work.

That crazy angle on the exhaust tip is to allow your full exit angle without damaging the tip. Otherwise it would scrape and potentially break further up the pipe.

Welcome!

Post some photos of your Jeep when you can.

MPG typically gets better after about 2K miles or so.

There are better aftermarket mats.

Your lights seem normal to me, although my Patriot does not have the daytime driving lights, other vehicles I have driven that do work the same as you describe.

I've driven a lot of vehicles over the years, and have to get used to the dash set-up in each, all different.

1. The speedometer. I actually hadn't noticed that...my toyota had it in the center so it wasnt a huge change. Other cars do seem to have it on the right more often that not.

2. High beams can only be switched on if the headlights are switched to the on position. This is exactly why I did not want the DRLs. My last car had them and it was really annoying.

3. There is no flap at the top of the gas fill tube. Not to worry, it is just a newer design that makes the little flap obsolete. The Pat is the first car I have had without the flap too...just be thankful its not the crazy Ford version that doesnt even have a cap haha.

4. The exhaust tip is cut at a funky angle instead of being cut as a flush circular tube. Throw a tip on that! I didn't like the way it looked either. A new tip was one of my first mods.

5. There is a silver device mounted atop my air filter box with two leads connected to it...not sure what this is. That is your ECU module. It was relocated to sit on top of the air box when they redesigned the system in 2011.

6. Is there a way to disconnect the shoulder belt for the middle rear passenger seat for when the seats are folded down? Yes. If you look at where it anchors into the seat in the middle, you can slide a key tip in to release it. To store it, it retracts all the way to the back right D pillar, and there are cutouts in the plastic trim piece to hold it in place.

7. I am hoping gas mileage improves as the engine breaks in. Mine got better over time, I average 21-22 with mostly city driving. 28 on the hwy.

8. The factory all-weather mats kinda suck. Amen brother! I took my front ones out, and use them as a may for snowy boots on my porch in the winter. Rugged Ridge and WeatherTech make the best ones for the Pat.

9. Anyone else think the sideview mirrors on the 2014 seem kinda boxy looking? It took me a while to get used to...they are 2x the size of the ones on my old toyota...but wow you can see everything haha!

Thanks for your feedback. The 400 mile trip down from Germany left the vehicle coated in smashed bugs...will take and post some picks after I clean things up a bit.

I have not looked closely yet but am wondering if the mounting of the ECU module presents any issues when it comes time to inspect/change the air filter?

Well I looked closely at the seat for the rear middle seat and I do not see a way to unhook it. There is a place in the back that looks like a place to hold it if unhooked but don't think 2014 has that option. If someone know different post pics.

3. I also don't have that spring loaded flap inside my gas fill tube, must not be on any of the newer models.

5. I believe the silver thing with those big wires sticking out of the top of the air box is just one of the engine computers, mounted high to avoid water, and on the air box to keep it somewhat cool. I had no trouble with accessing the filter for replacement with simple hand tools.

7. My mileage has gone up about 1 mpg since purchase. It's still low in my opinion. I average about 22.5 mpg doing 50/50 city/hwy but I live where it's windy often and there are hills everywhere so I guess I can't complain. 24+ would be my goal some day.

Congrats on your new Jeep! I hope you love it and take plenty of photos or video to share with everyone!

It looks like you have the Latitude trim, which includes split fold rear seats so it has it on there. If you look at where the end of the belt connects to the seat (on the right of your hip if you are sitting in the middle I think). Look over the connector closely and you should be able to see a small little nook that you can press in to release the anchor buckle.

Hopefully that helps...Ill post a pic tomorrow once I get back in my Pat and that should be a little more help. I know how much it bothered me so I am sure you'd like to get it undone haha. Here is the excerpt from your manual (#10), it might help.
