I've looked at replacing the Goodyear SR-A tires that came with my patriot. I want a good on/off road all terrain tire but am having a hard time finding a tire that will fit. What is the biggest size tire I can use that does not rub? Could I go all the way up to something like a 225/70/17 or would that rub and not register correctly on the speedometer? I have the 17" OEM wheels with FDI Patriot that isn't lifted.

Thanks!

That size will definitely rub when turning the wheel to full lock. 225/65-7 should fit without rub, but in my case it did rub a little at full lock, until I got spacers. The higher the Patriot is, the more rub it will experience because when the suspension drops, it gets pulled in closer to the body

So are you using a lift kit on your Patriot? If so, how many inches? Also, what size spacer did you end up using?

there's only 2 lifts available for the patriot

"Stu's coils" a taller set of springs that give you close to 2 inches higher than stock
-or-
"Rocky Road Outfitters" 2" spacer lift.

I saw somewhere on here where some guy mentioned that he had used a lift around 1" or 1.25"...

Probably the RRO

I'd tend to agree with you, I believe the spacers would be cheaper. Also, going with the spacers rather than replacing the coils will preserve your OEM ride quality. I've considered the spacer lift heavily. Is it something I could do myself or would I be better off taking it to a professional?

I had slight rub when I put 225/65R17's on my bone stock FDII. After I put the coils on and went up an almost an inch, the rub got significantly worse at full lock. I put on 1.25" wheel spacers, and have had zero rub issues since.

So since I have a Bone Stock FDI (which sits about .7 inches lower than the bone stock FDII) I'm thinking that I would be safe with the 225/65R17's. Would I be correct in that assumption?

I have stock suspension on my 2011 FD1 and run 235/65R17s with slight rub at full lock, so you should be fine with the 225.

It's a pretty safe assumption. If you get any rub at all it would be minimal and will go away after the tires wear down some. Many have used that size with zero rub, and I only know of two people that reported slight rub.

OK, so thinking of trading my 08 in for a new Patriot. So thinking I might change the wheels and/or tires right off, if I can get a tire place to buy the stock tires.

So I have a couple questions. I can find out what tire sizes fit, don't rub, etc from threads here, so here's my questions.

Did you folks buy 5 tires, so the spare is the same?

And do the bigger tires fit in the spare tire spot?

Anything else I have to consider?

depending if you get stock 16's or 17's with your new pat you might be stuck w/215's if you're not going for a 2" lift

as for the spare, I couldn't justify the cost of a 5th new tire for the spare. But since my FD2 stock spare is already a full size tire I figured I'd be ok for a few miles if I ever needed it.

If you wanted to air on the super cautious side you could always go for something like a 225/60r17

235/65/17 have no issues with mine.
i removed the pinch weld as i run 245/65/17 for winter tires, but i never had rubbing with 235/65/17.

But, you are using spacers and a lift. I was talking about those of us which are bone stock.

^^^^scratch that, my FDI has 9.1" (the same as FDII) of ground clearance..so now I'm really confused
