From chrysler Press release:

“While the auto industry is experiencing the impact of slow economic growth, Chrysler LLC February results reflect progress within each brand,” Vice Chairman and President Jim Press said. “The positive numbers for Dodge cars, the all-new Chrysler Town & Country and the Jeep® Patriot prove our renewed focus on consumer feedback, such as the demand for good fuel economy, is resonating—and translating into sales of our New Day Value Packages.”

this sounds something different to the last comments from Jim Press (or at least what the crowd thought about Compass and Patriots future) after Press announced the lineup reduction,or?

Also from the februar press release:
The all-new Jeep Patriot set a new sales record for the month of February with 5,195 units sold. The vehicle is one of Chrysler's recently introduced models that achieve 28 miles per gallon or better in highway driving.

Compass is down to 2879 units. If you ask me the compass should recover soon or it could end on the lineup reduction list.

The newly introduced Liberty solds 7300 times or 3 percent less than Februar last year. Guess that´s a disapointment or?

You are correct. I think Compass is doomed if it doesn't pickup sales by May. It also does not bode well for Liberty. Prior year was the old Liberty design. I really don't know what they were thinking with the new Liberty. They made it bigger so it competes with the Grand Cherokee. They don't need two that size, but then again if it's smaller, then it competes with the Patriot. They need to either spread them out in size and market, or clean a little house.

It will be interesting to see how well the Journey does. I've seen it now and to me it looks like a larger version of the Caliber. I'm not sure that's what they needed, but we'll see in the next few months.

This is how I see it. They thought the Commander would become an immediate success and they would have been able to discontinue and replace the Grand Cherokee with it by now.

I think the plan was to have a small (patriot) medium (liberty) and large (commander) with similar styling in the line up in addition to the 2 Wrangles. When the Commander failed to dominate the sales figures over the Cherokee they had to re think the plan.

I still wish they would use the Commander as the basis for a new pickup.

#3 ·
If you ask me the commander is in big trouble too.
It´s the one with the fewest sales numbers in the Jeep lineup with 2568 units that´s 50+ percent less than last year.
And also the Grand Cherokee dropped over 30 percent less and is down to 7163.

If this is going to continue the Patriot could be the most sold Jeep end of the year.
Just kidding...but it´s seems that milage will be a big sales factor in future.

Commander is already headed for the end. I believe this is the last model year for the Commander. It was announced early last year I believe.

I think you are right. Mileage is king this year. All the larger vehicles with worse mileage are down in sales. I'm kind of surprised the Compass isn't up in sales. I wonder if the Patriot is pulling people away almost as a perceived upgrade.

In my opinion, here is the problem with the Compass:

- Same technical specs as the Patriot
but -Smaller-

People are already sacrificing size by scaling down from their larger vehicles, and when they see two vehicles side-by-side with the exact same mileage, but one has a feeling of less interior space, they will pick the larger one.

I wish they would have differentiated the Compass, like a hybrid setup or something. A hybrid Jeep!

"Dealers had a good month moving the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass. Together, they sold 19011 of the trio, a 30 percent increase from last February and the second highest monthly total for Belvidere-built vehicles since the Caliber-Compass-Patriot era began in January 2005."

Now all they need to do is a little advertising and take advantage of our latest energy "crisis". I am too young to have seen the first one in the '70s. I am glad that I don't get to miss out on all the fun!

I am beginning to see more of them around here.

I don't know... Everyone keep saying the compass is gone, but now that the liberty is nolonger attracting the female audience, I'd presume over time, many of them will move to the compass. The problem is that those that I know picked up the last of the libs, and most don't even know the compass exists...

If they drop the compass, then there is no car designed for the huge female market that largely went after the old liberty. If you ask me, the redesign of the lib was a huge mistake. The new lib should be the new pat...

(I know "some" women like the "real jeeps" but don't even TRY to tell me most do...)

My wife would not have purchased a Patriot, the Calibur has too little space, but she loves her Compass!

On another topic about advertising or lack of it, Toyota is on TV at every break, on every channel, in every program at all times of the day and night with ads for their product. No wonder there are no ads for Jeep, Toyota bought up all the time. They advertise more than mud-slinging politicians!

Have you noticed that the Liberty as well as many of the Jap SUVs all have hidden their spare tires? That was the largest turn-off for me was that they couldn't do a better design to hide the spare. It looks great on the military jeep, but not on your basic family car!

I don't know what they did with the Libby either? The Libbies style is now branded, and they just hand it over to the compass and graft the commander on the front, as well as make it more boxy? IDK what happened.... but I'm glad the patriot is doing well. It'll be a classic. Once more off road, and custom products become available, they will be even more popular.

being a big guy (6'4") and coming from the pickup world where gas mileage was just thrown out the window, switching to the patriot was the best move i made in a long time when it comes to vehicles. i suspect alot of ppl are in the same boat. with rising gas prices (which i suspect will be higher then ever this summer) people are ramping up for the best fuel economy while still having a decent size vehicle. alot of my friends i talk to and show them my new patriot cant believe the room it has and the mileage i get, chrysler really got it right imo with the patriot and i see the compass dieing off, as well as the commander.

I would also suspect that in the UK given time that the Patriot will become Jeep's best selling model. The fuel economy and low emission on the CRD put it ahead of the competion. In a country where we pay extortionate prices for fuel and taxed on emissions, and where mothers use SUV's for the school run it could well be a cash cow for Chrysler.

I guess i disagree with some of this. I love the styling on the new Liberty as the other Liberty looked like a gimpy turtle. I had a lot of time checkin it out in the showroom with the other vehicles and believe it has its own niche. First of all, regardless of our dilusions here, solid rear axle is always better off-road than our AWD neons with SUV bodies. Additionally it is still nowhere in the ball park of the Grand Cherokee. Look at the price tags. The Liberty is actually affordable where as teh Cherokees cost as much as $45,000.

I believe the future is this...

1.) Bigger boxier Grand Cherokee with 3rd row seating option

2.) Current Style Liberty which is smaller than GC but l;arger than Pat and offers affordable SUV with real offroad abilities (solid rear axle)

3.) Patriot which fills teh compact fuel efficiant SUV niche and competes with Escape, CR-V, and Rav4

4.) Wrangler... in a class of its own.

Please dont misunderstand me... I know that teh Patriot is a true Jepp with more off-roadability than most other Non-Jeep competitors. But I simply believe it is not nearly as capable as the Solid Rear Axle Liberty.

That's about what I see happening. They could keep the Compass around, it depends on whether they're turning a profit with the thing- since it uses the same platform and drivetrain as two other vehicles, it probably isn't that expensive to keep making. However, if the Commander ends up in a shallow unmarked grave, the Grand Cherokee really needs to grow a bit and fill the 3 row segment. Interestingly, around here the Commander seems to be selling well; I see them all the time- more than the GC.

you forgot - all models in a CRD or diesel hybrid

to be competitive in other countries they need too look at localising some models

larger fuel tanks are a must in Australia
stiffer suspension - too allow for long range driving
distinct off road vs road or towing vehicles
need to look at testing other than the rubi trail ...ie Africa, australia etc

Toyota and nissan sell well here because they test new models here and the middle east and Africa and build models for specific countires

There are many of Jeep "should haves" Never partnered with Renault, never sold out to Chrysler, should have continued to produce a pickup, should have made factory available CJ parts rather than letting after-markets take the profit, should have listened to customers and dealers sooner, the list goes on and on..........Hopefully the worst is over, and Jeep will prosper under this new management. If the Patriot is any indication, it really is a new day at Jeep! :)

Yes toyota seems to be very agressive when in comes to comercials. But it doesn´t work everytime. Last summer they introduced the Auris here in Germany and spend 20 Million Euros and plastered a couple of cities just with posters. but end of story is that the auris wasn´t a succsess here. 30 percent less sales than expected.
Toyota as biggest japan brand has only 4.8 percent market share in Germany and lost somewhat in 2007. I read some german car boards and they are full now with complains from Toyota car owners that the quality decreased over the last years but prices raised on the other side to domestic standart.

That is the challenge that all auto makers face. In order to be the big dog of marketshare your quality will suffer because in order to produce the numbers you have to reduce tolerances, outsource to multiple vendors, speed things up, and allow some lower quality stuff pass through. Toyota is now finding out that it isn't so easy being at the top of volume.

IMHO....That is what made me a Jeep and AMC fan. I liked the day late and dollar short approach to auto manufacturing. AMC was never going to be number one so they didn't bother to try. They didn't come up with manny winners. They inherreted all the amazingly timeless Kaiser Jeep designs. However, most of their big money makers, like the mini-Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee did not come to fruition until after Chrysler bought them up. Iacoca was no idiot.

If AMC had not blown so much money developing the Matador Coupe, and the Pacer would have been brought to market as it was designed*, things would have been very different.

*The Pacer was originally designed to have front wheel drive.

Everyone seams to have forgot the Eagle. I had a Eagle wagon 4x4 and it was a decent family daily driver. I think it came out ahead of its time. If it had been a few years later it would of been a seller. As for the Libby my wife hated the still of it. She has a 96 Grand 5.2 V8. She is why we are getting A patriot. To replace the grand so she can get MPG.

False advertising

It used to make my skin crawl in the 90's when Subaru had the ad campaign for the Outback wagon with Crocodile Dundee saying "it's the world's first sport utility wagon" What a "crock"!
