Hey guys, was looking around in auto zone and talking with an employee there talking about the patriot, saying I wanted to do something unique with the exterior, and he came out looked at the jeep, loving it, he suggested a single racing stripe 6 or 8 inches with a 1/2 inch stripe off to one side coming from the rightmost opening in the front bumper up the driver side, off center.

Thinking about this and staring at my jeep, I think it would look good, but do you think a racing stripe on a jeep is odd?

He also suggested when I put my body side molding on, to color match it to the stripe. So, steel blue jeep, silver stripe, and silver 1/2 inch body side molding, maybe white? Think it would 'work'?

Do you think this would be nice or not? If not, I can always take the stripe off, it would be vynil but not the body side molding...

I wish I was good at photoshop... I would be able to better picture it. Unfortunately I am stuck with Paint...

i personally dont like the single offset stripe, but thats just me.. if its done right it'll look good on any car. but that style has kinda been adopted by the import scene. if youre also into that, it would be cool to see a pat done up almost like an import, im doing that to my element. try it and see how it goes...

I wouldn't do it. It's a Jeep, not a Honda. Most Autozones, Advance Autos, etc, focus most of their aftermarket attention on the compact/import scene, so of course they're going to offer you the tackiest and cheapest of "aftermarket" equipment that they can. Stay away from it. Except for vehicle maintenance, nothing good comes from those stores. :) Just my $.02.

I like a racing stripe on some Mustangs but, that's about it.

On the other hand, I say try it. It is only tape. Does not look good you can remove.

Maybe consider a pinstripe on the side.

I like the added side molding. I did black. But, there are other options.

It is funs trying stuff. Not everything has to work or even have majority approval. It is your Jeep, have fun and enjoy it.

This guy wasn't actually trying to sell me anything... just never saw a patriot 'up close' before... and he gave me a web site to get the higher quality products...

So I was back there today and told him I wasn't sure exactly how it would look, and he took me over to the car paint wall, and picked me up a can of temporary auto/glass paint and he gave me a discount (came to $4 for two cans) and a free roll of automotive masking. Its snowing now, so it will have to wait a few days when it is warmer... but I'll try it out... just see how it looks... I will obviously post pics... either way.

While I will have the paint... and am ambitious, anybody have suggestions to customizing the exterior? I need to do SOMETHING with the exterior, (interior is under construction, and also under wraps.....) to make it 'mine' I've always had a unique car, and with 5 other patriots I see riding around town, I just need something to set mine off... so far every exterior accessory has been gross looking.... and I just can't figure out anything to do with it!

to put it simply, NO!

A racing stripe like that only really looks good on a roadster type racing car.
It looks out of place on an SUV; especially one that has a small 4 banger and is shaped like a brick. Don't get me wrong I really like our little vehicles, but they don't really evoke thoughts of winning the 24 hours of LeMans or the Indy 500 or Formula during the 50's thru 60's or speed like a good Carroll Shelby design.

I really don't think of my jeep as an SUV... more of a car... I am just baffled as to what to do with the exterior... the interior is going to look a lot like the startech, with a few upgrades, without the leather seats, and with the outside, I want it to match the interior styling, I just can't get the look... sure this isn't exactly it... but the startech jeep was just plain black with an awesome bumper... I am NOT a chrome kind of person, I like silver/brushed metal, especially with the steel blue. Today I saw two steel blue patriots... way to many... I don't like fitting in....

I don't know... I think I just need to play.... I am, without a doubt taking the turn signals, and tail lights, down a shade with some tinting, just enough to smoke them out a little... just because I'm not a fan of the red/blue and yellow/blue combo, and can't stand euro lights...

Maybe just a decal like X-Patriots?

We'll see!

whataroit,

Can't wait to see the temp. paint.

I have been thinking about it. First, I have only liked the racing stripe on some Mustangs. But, what was it, Herbie the Volkswagen movie had a stripe many folks like it and copied it. But, I do not like Volkswagens.

There is a new mustang in town, red with a racing stripe. I do not care for it but, everyone else talks how good it looks.

So, who knows. Maybe a black racing stripe would work.

I think the real key is to accent what you have. Look at the lines of the car, what can you accent and how?

I did chrome door strips on the black fins of the grill. They look great. You might want to try that. There is a post on it. The guy that sold me the car, commented how good the strips looked.

Hope the temp. paint is black, it might look good on blue.

Check out pics of "Camel Trophy" vehicles and take some "cues" from them. If you do a "stripe", I think it needs to be much wider and the color could be a bit Stealth...like a Blue on Blueish. I always like understated. Or a Dark Silver Stripe on Blue.

the temp is white, I wanted gray, but they didn't have any. Black would kind of get lost on steel blue... would be more of a low key/ghost thing... Temps are not cooperating with me, and tomorrow, was supposed to be almost 50... but they just said it will be snowing all night into tomorrow AM.... ehh... I don't know. We'll see... I want to also see what the front grille would look like painted a different color... would it set it off, or ??? like I said, I will play...

As Cork said, I would consider a pinstrippe job more than a racing strippe. Something light, maybe on hood, side and rear. Would have to see a simulation on computer.
