My Pat is at the dealer for the 3rd time to fix a leak into the rear cargo area, similar to DavidOBE's. This time, they sent it to their body shop to be fixed. I dropped off the car last Thursday and they gave me a loaner as they said it would take more than one day as they were going to remove the headliner. On Friday, they called and told me they had found 3 seam leaks. They had fixed them but they had ordered a new headliner as the original one was stained. The headliner should arrive on Monday so I won't be able to pick it up until the afternoon. I've had the loaner over the weekend so I haven't been too inconvenienced. I just hope they've stopped the leak. I'll fill everybody in once I know more about where the leaks were. They've also ordered a new mat that goes under the spare tire as it was saturated.

So far so good with no leaks, but I'm only at 400 miles. Production date July 2007 with 12/20/07 purchase/delivery date. Wondering as some had mentioned previously if movement is a contributing factor....will periodically check for leaks as mileage accumulates.

Does anyone know the purpose of the plug shown in the picture provided by DavidOBE?

It's the plug at the top center of the hatch opening.

Given the limited clearance between the top edge of the fully opened hatch and the roof, I wonder if the plug is meant to serve as a bumper to prevent any possibility of metal to metal contact should the hatch be hyperextended when opened. Then again it might be a plug that fills a hole used for some purpose during manufacturing the vehicle.

Just wondering.....

Three seam leaks. That is very troubling, that, if my assumption is correct, could mean that the robotic welders were not programmed correctly. If this is the case, there could be leak problems in a specific batch of cars when the welders went off spec. So far my 08 Patriot has not had any problems.

I have been very ticked off at the reviewers who have been dissing the Patriot. I have found it to be a fine running and handling Jeep and have hopes of keeping it for an extended period of time. I am NOT happy when I read about these leak problems as not only are they very upsetting to the owners, they could spell disaster for the future of the model if not corrected quickly. My fingers are crossed.

I'm happy with my Pat, except of course with the leakage problem. Except for my first visit to the dealer, where they really didn't take the problem seriously, I've been happy with their effort in resolving the problem. They decided to change the headliner, the tire mat and the rear dome light without me even having to ask. I just hope they've fixed the problem so I can get on with enjoying my Pat.

Took delivery of my Patriot last week Thursday. This evening I set a phone book down on the left rear passenger floor atop the rubber floor mat. Part of the phone book was in contact with the floor carpet while the rest was on the runner floor mat.

When I picked up the phone book a short while later to take it from the car, I noticed a corner of the phone book was wet. Removing the rubber floor mat revealed the carpet in that passenger foot well was soaked. I used a towel to remove as much of the water as possible. There was a musty odor associated with the water which makes me suspect this wasn't the first time the carpet became wet. I believe my vehicle car was built in August and had been sitting at a dealer in another state before being located and transferred to my dealer for purchase. As such even though I have only owned it for a week it has been sitting outside for several months already.

Looks like another leaker is joining the growing list. Unlike some of the other reported leaks I have not seen any water dripping out of either the front or rear overhead lights.

Service Department called. They will be replacing the door seals. Not sure how this fixes the problem.... What could be wrong with brand new seals??? And if the problem is indeed with the seals why doesn't the door on the opposite side leak the same way? I'm a bit confused by this.

By way of a further update, it rained pretty hard while I was driving on New Year's Eve. When I stopped at a gas station (so the vehicle would be under cover) I opened the driver side rear passenger door out of curiousity and saw water drops on the rear seat as well as streaks of water on the interior body and on mouldings surrounding the door opening. This was pretty good evidence that water was making its way around the door seals and made me fell better knowing it should be easy for the service department to find the leak by simply spraying water from a hose.

When that door is closed, does it line up evenly with the rest of the body, or does it stick out some? I saw this problem on a Pat that I test drove, and only on that particular door. It looked as though the door latch was adjusted out too far, and it could maybe cause a gap in the rubber seal against the body.

Mine has the same 'problem' with that specific door and no water comes in... (knock on wood!). Door not lining up with the body seems to be a little problem in some pats.

Yep, I noticed the other day running my hand from the fender across the edge of the door that the driver side (left) rear passenger door sticks out a little father from the rear fender than does the right rear passenger door. That is part of the reason I am wondering why the service department is replacing seals to fix the leak instead of adjusting the door?????

Hello all,

Here's a new update on my situation:

On the 23rd the rain came back in my car. On the 28th I sent a letter to jeep and chrysler giving them 15 days to repair the car or I will go legal.

Today was my appointment (and their last chance) to repair my Patriot and they worked 7 hours today on it (what they told me).

They temporarily gave me a Compass until my car is finish being repaired, which I appreciate more than the Dodge Caravan they gave me last time (I hate vans).

So, during work, I called them to see how the repair was going and he told me they had find a leak but was not where I told them it was (dome light in trunk). He tried to explain where the leak was but I had no clue at all what he was talking about.

When I got back to the dealer to get the Compass, I asked to see what was the leak they found and he showed me the location (which was under the seal of the cargo door, right side around the height of the rear lights).

He said that the mat where the spare tire was was wet and humidity got in. Also, since it's winter, there was a huge piece of ice where the spare tire was.

They removed the mat and ordered a new one (I'm glad I didn't had to ask for it).

So now, what this mean is that I have TWO leaks. One behind the seal of the cargo door and one on the top somewhere.

They didn't find the one on the top yet (which still exist and I have the video to prove it).

I don't know how much time it will take but they seems to be more intelligent than before and I hope it will be repaired for good (or I will have to go to a mediator who will decide the outcome).

So guys, not only check your dome light in the trunk but also check the spare tire for any water infiltration. So far that's the one I got and I hope there are no more leak!

Will keep you posted.

Well, it's finally a rainy week here in the valley, and I've got an appointment to drop my Jeep off at the dealer in the morning for their second attempt to fix my leaking rear cargo light. Just discovered a little while ago that my middle dome light (above the passenger seat) is also leaking. I opened up the cover for my sunroof and stuck my hands around in there, and they came out wet. I can physically see water leaking in the very front two corners of the sunroof. So I've printed out the leak detection guide and am scoping around trying to find the TSB sheet for the calibur/compass sunroofs with the drainplug issue on here.

I called my dealership this morning to schedule an appointment, and was asked when I wanted to bring it in. I said, "As soon as possible...hopefully it'll still be raining." Service guy said, "got a leak, huh?" I confirmed, and then you could tell that he pulled my record up on the computer because he replies with, "Still?!? In the back area??"

So yeah...hopefully I'll get some resolution this time. I've replaced my small tupperware container under the rear dome light with a larger one...and just went and threw a towel on my passenger seat to absorb any drips from the center dome light. I'll be watching my sunroof.

I don't have the ability to park under cover at home...and the rain is coming down pretty heavy out there. Looks like they'll have lots of water trails to follow tomorrow morning....

<<EDIT>> Found the link to the sunroof TSB in this thread... http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/showthread.php?p=44110 seven posts down. I'm going in armed with this and the leak detection guide tomorrow morning...we'll see how it goes...

Well the Patriot went back in for another leak this time due to the cold there was proof of the leak. There were actually icicles hanging from the rear dome light. They are replaced the seal on Monday, ran water over it for three hours found another leak, replaced the silicon in the new area where the leak was. hopefully we will get it back today. In the mean time they gave us a 08 Liberty as a loaner. Sorry to say I am not impressed. It's weird, the body is to tall you feel more lean in curves and it's awful thirsty... With work I haven't been able to take it out and play but I would like to see how it handles off road first glance I don't know, because the nose sits lower than the bottom edges of the door so approach would be a problem.. Ok I am rambling so back on topic I hope this las tfix does it for the patriot, because overall it's a great rig.

...update...water is now puddling in my front dome light and the front passenger pillar is dripping water.

I am also paranoid about my rear floorboards.

Hope the dealership gets is all fixed tomorrow....

Just got a call from my dealer. They say it's the sunroof leaking. Parts are up in San Fran, so they're keeping my Jeep overnight and I should have it back by the end of the day tomorrow.

I think it helped that we had such a good rain yesterday. Water was still dripping from the cargo dome light when I dropped it off this morning, and they could see little pools of water in the other two lights. My container in the back had a layer of water in it that had accumulated since lunchtime yesterday, so they were able to see how serious it was.

More rain to come...so I should be able to see right away if they removed the waterfall feature. :)

Hello all,

I didn't reply yet because I was not convinced that the repair was done adequately and here's why.

When I went to take my patriot back from the dealer for the eighth time (to repair the same leak again and again, see previous post for my long story), first thing I do is check around the car that there are no scratches and that everything is fine, then open the trunk and open the headliner to see if they put some kind of patch to prevent me from seeing the problem (I wouldn't be surprised that they would have done that). No patch but the first thing I noticed (while my hand were freezing because it's winter here in quebec) is that there was two small frozen "lake" showing that water didn't stop to drop from the roof.

First thing I told me, without being convinced of that myself because I would have done a better job than them, is that the water I saw was the remaining of their water test to see if the car was still leaking. It was really undoubtful (sp?) because when I saw the car during the reparation, they had removed everything, the headliner was no longer installed in the car. So if they had finished repairing the leak, there shouldn't be any water on the headliner.

I even shown the water remains to the operation director who was following my case and he told me that it was a remain of the tests (yeah right).

So, we got our big rain today and I was able to verify if the leak was repaired or not.

And water was still coming in again. I won't post their comments of their work report since it didn't correct the leak, and I don't feel like translating it from french to english either (not that good at translating that kind of stuff).

So now I have many option:

1 - Go to PAVAC and present my case and request a replacement/refund of the car.

2 - Go to another dealership and tell them my story and ask them to repair it.

3 - Go to an independant garage and ask them to find the leak and give the bill to my dealer. I check with them first if they are gonna refund me, if not, I will not go that route, but I hope they accept.

I feel like taking the first choice but the result might be that I will have to go to step 2 and 3. Therefore, if I want to have better chance getting a replacement, I will go with 2 and 3 first and go to 1 if nothing happens.

I will also request the dealer to check of any sign of rust to make sure this stupid problem didn't cause rust. If yes, then I don't know what I can request

I should have kept my old hyundai accent and wait for the 2008 model...

Will keep you posted guys (and girls)!

You know...this vehicle is starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth as well...I am this far from going on record and saying I wish I researched a little more thoroughly, and bought something comparitible however has been out on the market for more than 2 years. I didn't buy a chrysler because I think they always produce a supreme vehicle
Im not convinced the gas mileage is supreme,,,,this water situation that have plagued this vehicle is starting to scare me.
You can be damed sure, that if this water infiltration ever surfaced after your warranty ended by 1 km then they would do squat. The way the rear wiper 'skoots' across the window bites on the return cycle bites, inadequat hinges on the hood..the list just goes on and on.
How about they guy In Calgary whos brand new vehicle wouldn't start, and the roadside assistance Chrysler engaged told him to call back tomorrow..were too busy.
The only thing I like about the vehicle is the outside styling, and the comfortable seats.
Going forward I will only treat this vehicle as a source of travel, nothing more. No aftermarket bells and whistles being added, as the enthusiasm has been lost.
Can't wait to see what kind of big buck repairs are in store for me once the warrantly runs outs. Perhaps a new master cylinder or transmission once it reaches 100,000k?

I suggest we start a letter writing barrage to Chrysler/Jeep customer relations, and direct them to review these threads. I wish one of their engineers could respond on here, to give some kind of current status.
