Water Leaking Through Rear Dome Light

We have 9500 miles on our 2007 Jeep Patriot Sport, no sunroof. I took the Jeep on a roadtrip from Pittsburgh to outside of Toronto. On this trip, I've notice water leaking through the rear dome light like this fellow:

The pictures are similar, but the leak hasn't stained the headliner yet.

I will be taking this into the dealership ASAP to address this problem.

I'm very dissapointed that the vehicle has a water leaking problem. I thought we were going to luck out and not have any problems with it.

I'll let you know what becomes of this.

That is VERY disappointing. I hope they get you fixed up pronto. I hope this isn't a design problem!

I would be curious to know when the vehicle was actually made. Where I am going with this is perhaps all the Patriot's built between 1pm and 4pm on such and such a day were assembled with bad parts, bad assembly technique or whatever. I say this because of the commonality of the problems seen and the reasonably intermittent frequency. Things like a rookie assembler, an asleep at the switch inspector, bad batch of sealant could play a role.

We had a couple of days of rain last week and I made sure to feel around my sunroof and check the light in the back. No leakage issues. I plan to keep checking as we get more rain, though.

Mine was made in Sept 07.

I made an appointment at the local Dodge dealership (the Jeep dealership by our house closed) to fix the water leak issue for Friday December 21. Apparently, the have an independent contractor that comes in and takes care of these problems.

I've attached a photo of the water on the dome light and the damp spot on the headliner. The picture was taken with my camera phone, so it's not the best quality.

The odd thing is that this morning it rained for an hour, and when I checked, there was no water. I hope this isn't a difficult problem to correct.

I will keep you posted as to the fix for this problem.

Make sure you check underneath where your spare tire is. I had no sign of leakage but when I was checking my spare tire, I found a bunch of water. Since then, I have noticed it on my headliner.

Will do...thanks for the tip. I've been poking around int he spare tire well all week...I keep my squeegee and ice scraper in there (I like my windows as clean as possible when I drive) but haven't really checked out the bottom of the storage compartment.

Just to add to your tip, REMOVE the spare and lift the mat up. I just did that and found parts of the mat soaked.

That mat will act as a host for fungus and will make your vehicle smell funky in the warm weather.

I can't wait to get this problem fixed. At least the weather is cold.

Well, got the Jeep back from the dealer this afternoon -- they kept it over Christmas b/c of the remote starter install. Their waterproofing contractor blamed the Sirius satellite antenna.

We'll see how things go... keeping my fingers crossed that was the problem.

Well, I drove the Patriot this weekend and noticed that the rear dome light water leak was back. I checked the mat underneath the spare tire and it was damp and started to smell like mildew. I suppose it had been leaking for a while, but my wife drives it daily and didn't notice.

We're going back in this Friday 3/21 to have it "fixed" again.

I did learn that you should not take the mat and put it into the washing machine. It will rip the polyester batting right off the rubber. I mentioned this to our dealer, and he said they will look into replacing it since it was wet and damp due to this leak.

Perhaps I should look into the "I fixed my rear dome light" thread and share this as a tip with the dealer. :)

Sorry to hear that, Brett. I guess I better check the spare tire wheel well also. I have not seen any indication of leaks but who knows. It has probably been too cold her for any mildew to form yet.

I wrote that thread. That fix of mine is still holding, btw. :) This leak is caused by a horribly placed hole that the washer tube runs through. Water pools around the O-ring seal. Nothing protects the seal as the hose moves back and fourth when the tail gate opens and closes. It's easy for the pooling water to find its way in eventually.

It is my opinion that this design flaw will affect all Patriots at some point due to the seal not being protected. My fix reglues the seal and then reinforces it in a rather overkill fashion. I'm not a tech guy and it was simple to do.

Well, the dealer attempted their second fix for our rear dome light leak.

I found it amusing that they most noticeably address the rear washer hose grommet. It looks very similar to firemothjoe's solution in his other thread.

I've attached a few photos to illustrate.

So far, no leaks.

Rear Dome Leak

I've taken in my '08 Patriot to the dealer three, going on four times now and they still can't fix the leak. I'm planning on filing a Lemon Law complaint. And yes it's leaking from that stupid O ring from the rear wiper hose.

I think every patriot owner should be proactive here, get some silicone, and follow firemothjoe's instructions. Why wait for it to leak?

By the way, wipe the area down with alcohol first because silicone won't stick to wax, salt, dirt, detergent, or whatever else might be on the surface.
