My check engine light came on a couple of days ago. It had come on in the past, but gone away again after I tightened the fuel cap. This time it stayed on.

It drove and sounded fine. The miles per gallon stayed the same, the guages all looked ok, and I figured it must be some emission control sensor or somesuch.

After a couple of days though, I finally decided I ought to have the dealer take a look at it.

So this morning before starting out for work, I opened up the hood and checked the oil level, and the cololant just to be on the safe side. Everything looked fine. Not even a drop of oil low or anything.

So I shut the hood and got in to start it up.

The light was out.

I guess it was a check engine light and I had checked the engine so it was satisfied.

Poor little thing. I just hadn't been paying enough attention to it.

Anyway it all seems ok now.

lol, maybe it just needed a little tlc.
I would still take it in. the computer will store the trouble code and the dealer can see what it was.

Try throwing in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, every now and then as well. That goes a long way to clean out oxygen sensors and usually gets rid of the Check Engine light, unless its an EGR valve!

Fortunately, I haven't had to do that yet on my Patriot.

Earlier there was a mention from someone that his check engine came on and it seemed to be close to the time the oil was supposed to be changed. Are you nearing your oil change time?

I usually just pat mine on the dash and tell it "good job" after a challenge...passing a car...getting to the range...etc.

Never good to cuss out your car, used to cuss out my Mustang all the time, and it harbored a grudge. It stopped working at times that a sentient being would stop...

Praise it when it can hear you and talk trash when it's out of earshot....kind of like a wife.

:D

May be out of earshot but never out of ESP (and I don't mean the electronic stability program) shot.

Good Patriot...
Excelent wife...

Every day I talk a little dirty to my car, she seems to like that. I give her a little more, and hopefully I'll get it in return. lol

It's all about timing...break out the dirty talk at the wrong time and you're in the dog house.

Spanking her on the butt at the top of the hill is always a good idea though...

LOL
