Funny that you don't see the "30 mpg claim" anymore from Jeep...they have been dropped to 28/27 respectively Compass/Patriot by the new EPA estimates.

The big problem (IMHO) for the Compass is the front grill. Why try to put a Liberty Grill on a "car". They should have put the "TrailHawk" front grill design on the Compass...then it would look better than the Caliber.

That's because the EPA Revised their Tests. If you look at Any 2007 model the EPA rating will be higher than the 2008 model. The new EPA tests are more accurate but I still trust Consumer Reports Mileage Tests the most as they actually test the car by driving it on the road.

Looks are subjective. I like the looks of the Compass as does my wife.

That is what I was saying about "the new EPA ratings." It dropped most cars/suvs/trucks by 2mpg highway. I know a lot of people who didn't like the face of the Liberty when it first came out either...but it grew on some. I just think they could have been a little more inventive with thier first "real" venture into building a "Jeep Car". Definitely not bashing here:smiley_thumbs_up:

Unfortunately, CR also buggers up their numbers by trying to get too fancy with their test methodology. If you have back issues, go on back and look at their junk testing on the 2005 Liberty CRD, to see just how bad they can hose things up. A simple, fill the tank all the way, drive till it's almost empty, then measure how much you need to refill, would be more accurate then their method. If I remember correctly, it involves measuring flow to the injectors or something stupid. On the CRD they neglected to take into account that all of the fuel that goes to the fuel rail, doesn't go through the injectors, lots gets sent back to the tank as it is a very high pressure system.

Leave car testing to car people. Now, if you want to know about washing machines... CR is your magazine...

Too bad none of those people ever actually drove either one off road ... or stood around and watched while Expeditions West tested the Patriot under REAL off road conditions.

But hey, what do I know? I still believe in the days of no spin doctors.

Don't worry, neely, if you'll ever get yours delivered, and it's not a Monday morning lemon, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I have 9k on my compass, and still love it every time I drive it.:smiley_thumbs_up:
cheers
P.S.: I've given up on responding to the idiotic edmunds blog. These guys have made up their closed minds.

Having seen many "ComPatriots" both in photo and in person, I can say that while both have attractive body styles in their own regard, the Riot is more appealing to hubz and me for its traditional design ~ clean and classic.

My friend's Compass looks awesome in black and there's one in red at my office that looks nice too, but there's something about those headlights... they just seem too big and too round for the front of the car.

It took me a while to warm up to the round headlights on the Pat, actually... I prefer the lights on the GC but now when I see the Patriot, the headlights look just fine; not as "big and round" as the ones on the Compass.

As far as overall body style is concerned, I do like the curves of the Compass (and the Rallye edition is rockin!) but if I wanted a curvy crossover, I think I'd go to Honda for their CRV or Toyota for their RAV4... wanting a "true" Jeep design brings me back to the newly-updated Cherokee a.k.a. the Patriot.

I guess I'm a purist, but there you have it... hell, I was even gonna go with Inferno Red when we get our Riot not just cuz the color's gorgeous but also because it seemed so Jeepy but after getting hypnotized with all those amazing Sunburst Orange pix lately, hubz and I are leaning towards that now...

Anyhoo, in the battle of "ComPatriots," while the Compass is sleek, stylish, and just as much of a member of the Jeep family as the rest of the lineup, the Patriot gets my vote... unless, of course, someone wants to surprise me with a Black Compass Rallye!!! :p

the compass gets better mileage with the CRD 6.5l per 100k vs 6.7l per 100k
the compass has 18 in tyres vs 17 inch tyres
the compass looks like chrysler not a jeep

the patriot has better departure and entry angles
the patriot has a bigger boot/trunk for you guys
the patriot is cheaper
the patriot looks like a jeep

When the XJ Cherokee first appeared, it was viewed "as not a real Jeep" by the traditional Jeep crowd. Nowadays, it is a beloved member of the family. Hang in there Patriot AND Compasss owners . . . your day will come.

257,000+ miles and counting.
