My brother has a 2008 Riot. he still has the stock 205/70R16 on all wheels. we looked around and couldn't find many options except for the good year LS2. He wants to buy his tires from walmart and not any place else. So I look at a tire "Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max Tire" (can't post a link yet). I looked at the tire size calculator and the difference is minimum(1.1%).

I have a few questions,
1) Is 215/65R16 a good size? Is it better to go for a different size?
2) What are the best tires for the 16" rims? (I will try to convince him to get the best ones)
3) Will change the tire size have any other effects except for the speedometer?

Thank you all for your inputs.

I think Dunlop makes a 205/70/16. I ran 215/65/16s all winter: General Altimax Artics. Not a problem. No need to flash the computer for such a slight difference. According to Garmin I was going 1mph slower at 50 than the speedometer read. I'm about to get new tires and I'm going to go with 215/70/16s because I want the larger size. Again, I'm expecting a 1mph difference -- not enough to think about.

Like you I'm thinking of a LRR (low rolling resistance) tire, and I've had good luck with Generals so I'm leaning that way. I'm also thinking about Wild Country because they're cheaper -- I had them on our old Wrangler with decent results. Generals aren't that much more, so I'm torn. Back & forth I go -- I'll probably go with the Generals.

to be honest that tire seems smaller so you would have a little speedo issue and have to drive faster to attain speed. I would go with a 215/70/r16 its only 1/2in taller on most brands and there are a ton of more options. go to tirerack.com and do a search for that size you will be very happy with the selection i think http://www.discounttiredirect.com.

trust me you wont regret 215/70/r16 walmart can order other tire brands as well.

I looked around and found this tire. General Grabber HTS P215/70R16. Found good review and the size too is not bad. Now I feel that this is a better size than 215/65R16.

anyone had bad experience with these?

60k tread life warranty and 112$ a tire not bad at all im still an A/T tire guy myself but it depends on what you do with your patriot. If your brother is liking those for highway they seem like a great pick.

Check out this thread. I swear I've seen more but I can't find them at this point.

Walmart has these tires for $107 and they can ship to the nearest store. I have one more question. Do I have to do anything to the TPMS?

I think he he keeps the same wheels he'll just have to air them up and let the ECU take a reading one they're all inflated etc...

p.s. I went to walmart.com and checked out the warranty there is a 45k, and 60k tread-life depending on the load rating on the tire make sure to ask before you cough up any dough on a 45k tread-life tire....

I went with the 6 year 80,000 mi warranty Continental eco plus 215 65 16 for $92 ea + shipping from TireRack.com very happy with them so far, quiet and good in wet conditions. Same diameter as the goodyear LS 205 70 16 stock tires.

I look at the manufacture warranty, all tires rated "T" and below are covered for 60,000miles. This tire is rated "S"(112mph) so its covered for 60k.

Stock tires are rated "T"(118 mph), is it safe to get a "S"(112 mph) rated tire?

I replaced the 205 with a wider tire (235/65/16) that is the wider / higher shoes others have been able to put on the pat w/o having to hammer away the infamous pinch weld...

typically a wider/ bigger tire = for a softer ride. Now, if you boys like running that poppy faster, it actually goes way over 110, and it took me a while to get used to the bigger shoes b/c it feels a little more bouncy.
