I don't know why they wouldn't sell you a motor. How do they know you aren't going to put it in a boat? AISIN will sell tranny's to anyone.

It would be cheaper to get a 2nd hand Patriot shipped from Europe. I looked at having a muscle car shipped the other way from Chicago to London and it was surprisingly reasonable.

Dont think that would work!! I read about a Guy who Imported a diesel Dacia Duster into USA & he lives in Florida . He says he now has a totaly illegal vehicles & the Flodia Vehicle people have told him that he cant get plates for it, it cannot be rgistered or insured...This is because it does not appear on the US data base of vehicles legally allowed on US roads . They have told him he could be jailed for driving it & the best idea is to have it destroyed. So much for Diesels in the USA!!

but what if you drive temporarily as a tourist?
i mean if you go to the states with your vehicle.
are you allowed then?

Come on guys, he asked what he would need, not if it's legal or too expensive.

Bruski, your best bet is going to be to find a euro diesel Patriot or Compass. Get a wrecked one, preferably wrecked in the rear, should be a lot cheaper. Since it will be a wreck, you can state it's for parts, not use on the road on the import papers, and answer honestly that you won't put that vehicle on the road! ;) :p Then start swapping parts. Engine, trans, PTU (if 4x4), fuel tank and lines/filter, ecm and wire harness. If this is for a 4x4 you'll also want to check the rear drive ratio compared to yours (or just swap it as well). Once done, you can try to register it legally as a diesel, or just drive it. Some states are emission exempt for diesels, so when the garage goes to inspect it, they'll see it's a diesel and skip that part and slap an exempt sticker on.

If it was imported as a complete running vehicle then it must meet current emission requirements if it is newer then 1986.
25 year or older vehicles do not have to meet emission requirements for importation.

The problem with registering a diesel Pat in the states is the VIN #.
If you had a gas VIN # then registering it wouldn't be a issue.
So if you were to import in a totaled "NON-RUNNING" Pat and converted your gas pat over then you would be totally fine provided you lived in a state that didn't require emission testing.

And some parts of some states do not require it either. I know PA has emissions testing in some areas, I see the stickers on folk's cars. But where I live, out in the boonies, we have no emissions testing. So I could probably get away with it, if I did it like Todd said.

Todd, you always have such great answers for folks!
