After dealing with my tire persistently losing pressure for the past 3 months, I brought it into Cole Muffler to be examined and they said they plugged it, citing a bolt in the tire as the cause of the loss.

Any ideas how long I'll be able to use the tire before I should be looking for a new set?

Home and back to the tire shop. Get a patch or a new tire. Most shops don't do plugs anymore.

I plug my own tires all the time. They last the rest of the life of the tire if done correctly. A patch and a plug is really the best way to repair, but plugs alone hold up.

I should probably add that my post is from many years of my own experience. Plugged tires are weakened and the plugs can come out. But I don't drive 80+ miles per hour or try to take corners like a formula 1 driver, so I don't put much stress on a tire.

I have driven on plugs a few times. I have never had one come out. In fact, I am driving on a plugged tire now. With less than 7k miles on the Jeep, I am not replacing a tire(especially a crappy goodyear). I would consider myself a spirited driver and the plug holds up fine. As long as the plug is not close to sidewall of the tire you should be fine. But if it was too close to the sidewall they should not have plugged it. So I guess you are good to go.

Keep an eye on the pressure and fear not!

Tire plugs last the life of the tire until it gets to the wear bars. We have gone thru several over the years and never a problem.

Unless someone giving you advice has actually had a bad experience and is sharing it, do not listen to anyone else with no direct experience. "I heard that..." and "My friend's tire..." is ridiculous and a waste of your time to read.

The tire store repairs them with a plug with attached patch. They'll last as long as the rest of the tire. I have plugged my own tires with the "punch" kit from any auto store. As long as the raw rubber plugs are fresh and the rubber cement is good, they'll last forever.

i plug my tires all the time,
probably 2-3 plugs a year for past 10-15 years
never had 1 fail,
plug kits are fairly cheap and very effective,
for a tough spot recomend dismounting the tire,
to find the leak can use any soapy solution,
such as windshield wiper fluid,
once at a motel on vacation woke up to a flat tire
i used soap from the hotel and some water to make a soapy solution to pour on the tire,
continued my vacation with a problem,

In a fit of desperation I had a motorcycle tire plugged in MT and road it 500 miles home before getting a new tire. On the bike, I'm picky about such things. On a car, not so much.
I hear you there. I've plugged a motorcycle tire, but only to get me to the nearest motorcycle shop, and I took it real easy. On a car, I wouldn't worry about it so much.
