Is it safe to use black barbeque paint?
Safe everywhere..... except in Kalifornia

This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and/or birth defects or other reproductive harm. :D

Everything in Cali "contains chemicals known blah blah blah...."

Hubby and I are constantly amazed at all those signs posted everywhere...

Hey the black Draw-tite trailer hitch breaks up the silver muffler very nicely.

I noticed that the muffler kinda stuck out like a sore thumb, I had never thought about painting it though. Sounds like a project for next week when its slow at the shop :)

You know in regards to the muffler. I just finished looking at the jeep.com website and if you take a close look at the redone website you will notice a subtle change in something. Go to features, Exterio 360 and then rotate the picture so that you see the back of the Patriot. Notice anything yet? Blacked out muffler? Yeah. Hmm... are they really blacked out? Or is it just an illusion and they are still the same as the -07's?

I mentioned this on one of the other post, about the new slate gray interior. They said that all the 08 Pat that were coming out still had the silver muffler. So I think they just photo shopped it for the site.

My 08 has the silver muffler. It doesn't bother me so I'll keep my paintbrush in my pocket.

In my case, I am the opposite situation, Belveder. I have a stone white Limited. So, with the silver bumper, the silver muffler just doesn't seem too noticeable to me. So, I'm good to go as is.

Ditto here on the silver.

Khaki looks ok with the silver muffler. While the silver muffler on a black Patriot may draw your eyes down, I think that going black with a lighter coloured vehicel would cause the same issue.

Painting an exhaust is pretty much useless. Most heat resistant paints do work quite nicely, but add water to that (or salt in winter areas) it will eat away the paint so fast it'll just end up looking like 'saved a buck and fixxed it myself' type of repair with paint chipping from rocks, falling off/boiling from heat/water mixture and rusting due to salt.

I'm guessing this is the main reason why Jeep swapped for unpainted mufflers.

And to the original question, my 2008 Pat FD1 CVT2 had black underbody sound insulations and black painted gas tank with unpainted muffler.

Hmmm must be custom... the stock Patriot gas tank is plastic, not painted.:D

Not in the European market they didn't.

If you do a proper job of painting, which includes sanding and applying several coats with proper drying time in between, the paiting job should last just fine.

I am sure those of us who are taking a spray can to a vehicle are not expecting a lifetime warranty and are prepared to do touch ups if need be.

Some drivers have reported 6 months painted and no problems.

After 5 mos and 4500 miles my painted muffler still looks great. I did take care to sand, clean, and prime before painting.

If, after the winter, it needs a touch up (I suppose it might), I'll spend an hour to clean, mask and lightly spray paint again. No biggie.

What determines if you get a black or silver gas tank and exhaust? I've seen both Limiteds and Sports with either or. There doesn't seem to be a set rule - but I could be wrong and if anyone knows, it would be you folks.

Oh yeah, one more question. I've also seen Patriots with the Jeep logo auto shift knob, and others with a plain "chrome" type. Again, no model dependency so it seems.

PS. The Compass is the same way. Seen both on all models.
I just bought black exhaust spray paint and my muffler looks cool now, just like a Range Rover's pipes

Ive got a black muffler in mine! :D

(And glad of it. Looks much better, in my opinion.)
