As some of you know, I recently crossed over to the dark side and purchased a Nissan Pathfinder. Having driven the Pathfinder for about 3000km, I wanted to offer this observation and invite conversation. To my U.S. colleagues, I apologize for using the metric system here.

Using the EVIC history and the equivalent history on the Pathfinder + plus just eyeballing the tachs, I have noticed that:

2007 Patriot Limited 2.4L w/FDII at 100kmh tachs at 3000 rpm
2010 Pathfinder LE 4.0L 6 speed auto at 100kmh tachs at 2000 rpm

Patriot's EVIC reports average gas mileage of 11.5 litres per 100km of travel
Pathfinder's equiv reports gas mileage of 12.2 litres per 100km of travel

Travel type for each vehicle is both city and highway combined.

With *virtually* double displacement of the Pathfinder mill, the additional gasoline burden with the Pathfinder is less than 1 litre per 100km.

The 6 cyl mill obvious works less hard but what does this say about the gas mileage for an FDII? Either the mileage for Patriot is abysmal or the Pathfinder's mileage is incredible.

Another detail to mention is the Pathfinder requires premium fuel (91) or about 13 cents per litre over regular unleaded (87).

Thoughts?

Gears make a difference, and the Patriot is not very aerodynamic. I'm assuming the 2000 RPM, above, is in 6th gear?

I've had 351 V8's that would do 25 or better MPG on the highway, and 10 MPG around town.

rpms

smaller engines have to work harder to keep you moving,
so while at equal rpms, 4 cyls will get better mileage,
but to keep same speed 4 cyls generally have to run at higher rpms,
my 6 cyl cherokee sport rarely saw about 2500 rpms,
yet pat frequently visits 4k rpms

Very true. The 318 Dodge motor never got as good of mileage in the full size van as the 360. It was over worked and inefficient.

As far as "thoughts"....As long as you don't mind being seen in a Toyota, looks like you made a good choice. ;)

based on my mpg i'll take your cherokee

I have a 99 Cherokee 4X4 that gets 20 mpg on the highway and our Patriot 4X4 5 speed that gets 30 mpg. Guess which vehicle I take on frequent highway trips ??
yesterdays fill up,
10.5 gallons on 174 miles!!!!!!
16.5mpg!!!!!
half that tank was highway miles
i average 18-20 mpg
with +80k miles its not a random 1 time thing

how about in stop and go 50 kph city traffic? That's where the bigger truck will lose out.

My buddy with the V8 Silverado always used less gas than my 4.3L V6 jimmy on the long mountain highway climbs.

That reminds me of the episode of Top Gear where they reviewed the (Vauxhall) Holden Minaro (that comes with a Corvette engine in it) and he was going 60MPH at about 1200-1300 RPM.

And he said "Look at this thing! It's idling! You lazy AUSSIE!"

On a level road, my 2008 Patriot FWD tachs at exactly 2000 rpms at 100kmh -- 1000 less than yours. Which explains why I'm getting 30mpg or 7.8 lt/100km. Your rpms are running half-again as high as mine, and you're using half-again as much fuel. The economy figures are consistent for your rpms, I just wonder why you're revving so high. Are the ratios that different or is the Limited just that much heavier?

The FDII has a different gear ratio I understand. I think that is how the torque levels are maintained. That just means the FDII is not effecient on the highway. The way I see it anyway.

dont know how your managing that

Maybe not as efficient as the FDI, and for sure the FWD Patriots, but my FDII gets 24MPG average. That's great for the size and capability of the FDII Patriot IMHO.
with +80k miles,
i may have recalled 2 tanks where i got 25 mpg,
other than that its been consistent at 18-20 mpg,
lots of all highway trips,
not an aggressive driver usually at or maybe 5 above speed limit.

weird.. .why? because 100 km/h = 3,000 rpms is too high!!! when I drive my Pat, I always look at the tach and when I´m driving 80-90 km/h the tach is 1800 rpms, so when I´m driving 100 kmh is 2,100 average...

and mpg, I drove an awesome 2011 Grand Cherokee overland with the HEMI 5.7 (I really LOVE this engine) my speed was 60 mph in highway, I got 39.52 mpg!!!! (or 16.8 km per liter, obvious is because the MDS), and I don´t think to see this mpg in my little patriot!! LOL

BTW, my pat is 4x2
