Well, First time poster. First time Jeep owner..even though it is not the first Jeep in our family. I have always loved Jeep and my DAD had a Jeep and I have wanted one ever since. So, last year I finally got to buy a 2009 Jeep Patriot. I was thrilled, but a little concerned since Chrysler now owns Jeep and the reliabiltiy, but being a child hood jeep lover. I purchased it anyway. My mistake :( less than 10,000 miles and I just had the transmission replace. To my horror, my worst expectation have come true. It took a month for the deal (Cronic Cars) to get it replace. Waiting on parts! It is now replaced, but I feel like I am paying for a NEW 'Used" Car....any other Patriot owners out there? Do I have any course of action? I have tried the dealer, but being only a year into my loan I have negative equity and really feel like I am a hole with NO escape! Will Chrysler do anything for me??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There's been very few reported CVT Failures. Including yours I'd say about 4 or 5 in total. They are actually quite good units made by Jatco. I researched failure rates on these (including over manufacturers using the Jatco's like Nissan) before I bought and found most were lower then traditional automatics. I take it you bought a new 2009? If so, it was more then likely replaced with a new or factory rebuilt unit. I don't think anyone out there is rebuilding/repairing these things locally yet.

As long as your vehicle stays in your ownership, the 2009 has a limited lifetime powertrain warranty. If you sell it, the lifetime part is no more.

warranty

yes, i am aware of the warranty..because I used it to replace the transmission, but my concern is with less than 10,000miles on the vehicle it has already been replaced. I feel I have a less than valued Jeep compared to anyone that has NOT had this issue and if I try to resell it I am really at a complete loss if I disclose the transmission issue and like you said the warranty is NOT transferable. so that make my jeep pretty much unsellable in my opinion.

I think you're looking at this all wrong. Your transmission is now 10,000 miles newer then the rest of the jeep! SCORE! :D

Besides, factory serviced and replaced does not alter resale value. If/When you trade it in, they'll sell it used for the same price as one on the lot that hasn't had the trans. replaced on, maybe for more since it has a newer trans!

ps: I'm at 42k miles and the transmission works just great.

ok

that is all well and good as long as i am the original owner with a warranty, but if i try to sell this thing. I have to honestly tell the person it has had transmission work (and in reality if I was buying I would look elsewhere). Even if it is new, there still was a defect. I am aware this happens on any vehicle and that is part of the game but I am still and will probably pay down the road when I decide to sell.

Don't waste your breath on this guy, He has formed an opinion, (wrong though it may be) and nothing is going to make him feel better.
He bought it and already had decided it was junk before it had an issue.
He has a brand new transmission, has no impact on resale value. But he won't listen.
Who did the repair? A dealer or some shop? It was under warranty, nuff said.
Even if your car had not had an issue, ALL CARS A YEAR OLD WILL BE NEGATIVE EQUITY.
This repair has no impact on the value of the jeep, NONE!

Well, I suppose you could tell someone, but the dealers don't do that. If they are selling a used car on the lot, they don't give you a history report on it. If you ask they will, but they don't just hand one too you. They also would not consider replacing a faulty transmission with a properly working one as something that reduces the resale value of a vehicle. It's just a part, no different then replacing a faulty tie-rod or strut.

Again, turn that frown upside down! You have a newer transmission now, and newer is better! I wouldn't be surprised to learn your newer trans has some revisions or updates that make it a better unit then the original one that came in the vehicle.

It's really not a big deal and happens all of the time. A dealer replaced transmission done as warranty work will not diminish the value of the vehicle. I would even keep all of the paperwork and give it to the new buyer proving everything was done by the dealer as warranty work. Just drive the thing and stop worrying whats going to happen "down the road"

Another CVT failure.

My 2009 Patriot was just cruising along the freeway when the CVT transmission just quit and I rolled to a stop. Engine ran fine but any shift position was like neutral. No noise or any other sign of impending doom to warn me prior. Only 14,500 miles on the car. It's still at a dealer 300 miles from my home awaiting a new transmission. Fortunately, I wasn't in the boonies at the time this happened. I'm more than a little concerned as I do take it off road whenever I get a chance. Anybody here of such a thing happening?

Thats right, apparently he don't looks at things the right way, so don't waste time with him. My wife used to have a crappy Nissan Armada and the transmission failed with only 40,000 miles . We replace the transmission and sell that useless SUV. We tell the new owner and he didn't care. So what's the big deal?

Wow! They replaced it and didn't just repair, every time I had a problem with my Ford I only got things 'fixed'.

Sounds like you got a replacement so you've got a NEWER new car as the transmission was replaced.

Course of action? As in how can you get your truck fixed? Sounds like they did that.

Negative equity? Welcome to car ownership. If you buy new, the second you sign the papers your vehicle depreciates. Unless the vehicle is extremely rare or collectible, don't expect to make money on ANY vehicle.

Will Chrysler do anything for you??? sounds like they did by fixing your Jeep and getting you back on the road...??

The CVT is almost " Sealed for Life". thats why the only cure is a Trans. replacement. Failures are few & far between . You are most unlucky if your CVT fails , however nothing in this world is perfect so it does happen occasionally. The CVT works at amazingly high hydraulic pressure & way beyond the savvy of most technicians. Even fluid changes are not a recommended DIY proposition .

I also have a 2009 Jeep Patriot. My wife was driving to my daughter's a few hours away and the transmission temperature light came on and it went into "Limp Mode". She took it to the local dealer and it was under warranty and they replaced the transmission. It is now 5,000 miles later and the transmission temperature light came on and stayed but did not go into limp mode. I took it to the local dealer and they said that the fluid level was fine and the transmission was fine. Said it might be the wiring harness or the module (Not covered under the warranty $700.00). He did apply a software flash, ceared the codes and tested the high / low on the module. Next day transmission temp light comes on and within a couple of minutes goes off and the check engine light comes on code P0713.
