July markets slow worldwide for Chrysler's Belvidere trio

BELVIDERE — Dealers worldwide didn’t have a lot of luck moving the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot in July, according to statistics from Chrysler Group LLC.

In July, the company shipped off 14,313 Dodge Calibers, Jeep Compasses and Jeep Patriots to dealers, nearly 44 percent fewer than July 2009. Those three vehicles are assembled by more than 2,300 people at Chrysler’s plant in Belvidere.

The only Chrysler market to show a gain was Mexico, where Chrysler has a small footprint. Sales grew from 454 in July 2009 to 953 in July 2010. The Patriot by far is the most popular of the Belvidere trio in Mexico.

Sales of the Caliber, Compass and Patriot fell nearly 7 percent year over year in markets outside North America. They tumbled 34.5 percent in Canada and 54.3 percent in the U.S.

The U.S. numbers were skewed by the fact that July 2009 sales were artificially high because of the government’s cash-for-clunkers program that gave incentives to trade in aging, low-mileage vehicles for newer, gas-friendly models. The Caliber and Patriot were among the 10 most bought vehicles in the program.

Even though sales struggled in July, they easily outpaced production. Chrysler closed its Belvidere assembly plant for two weeks for summer vacation.

Caliber & Compass sales would have tumbled in this Overseas market , as they were deleted from the line up 6 months ago!!

I find this strange. The 3 dealers in my area are constantly selling out of Patriots.. Not the same for the Compass and Caliber though... I think Chrysler needs to start marketing the Compass and Patriot more though.

Multiple Choice Poll

Heads Up Jeepsters!

This thread's poll is multiple choice, meaning you can chose as many or as few of the 11 answer categories as you wish when voting. Please note, too, that this is a 'Sondage Privée' or private poll and no one except yourself will know how you voted unless you choose to tell the assembly of august Patriotnistas how and why you voted a particular way.

Thanks for participating .. Irish Waif

I'd say significant competition, but the cute-ute segment hasn't seen much new product lately. There's little to no market support, and quite honestly, most Chryslers just don't look like a good deal to people right now.

Poor marketing for sure, they should let me make a couple commercials.

Plus a lot of folks are turned off by poor quality, of the current Chrysler products. Just look around the forum for examples. And not only have they had quality issues, they don't do much for you as a customer to resolve them. Hell, ball joints and other front end failures at less than 50,000 miles, some under 20K miles? Come on, these are not things consumers are used to any more. My Tracker is not top-of-the-line anything, just a cheap 4x4 SUV, and it has over 178,000 miles on it and all front end parts are original. If Suzuki and Chevy can do that, you'd think that Tough Jeeps would last at least as long.

I just bought my patriot 2 weeks ago and the 3 dealers i went too all had very few in-stock
FWIW, my local dealership is loaded with Patriots: mostly Sport X models with windup windows. The mix includes two Latitudes and one 2.4l FWD 4x2 Sport with manual gearbox. Also there are a half-dozen or so Compasses in stock. None of aforementioned are moving at the moment, with some sitting idle on the lot for months.

Curiously in my neck of the woods, I see as many if not more Compasses on the road than Patriots. It seems women are driving the Compass.

They were busy enough to make the millionth compact a Jeep Patriot
made on July 28th , http://www.allpar.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Belvidere03-Web.jpg

I ordered a 2010 in May, but I think it was made in July or august, could someone tell when it was made the serial number is : 1J4NF2GBOAD636378
I just got the number today. The dealer says between the 25th and 27th Aug. I should have it.

Getting exited..

ONe of my freinds has been commenting on how neat he thought my Patriot was and even got to experience it's cherry-popping off-road mini-trail at an abandoned construction project that started around an unofficial ATV / dirt/mountain bike trail area. He told me it's low tow capacity kept him form getting one...he does have a big boat... Anyhow he convinced his girlfriend to trade in her Ford Fusion to make good on the August deals out here and she now drives a new Compass. Lustine out here has two of the trio under thier sale tent out front, sitting pretty next to a +$50k Challenger

The Marketing on the Patriot is terrible, like it doesn't exist. It does seem like they are trying to kill it off or abort it from the beginning. Maybe just trying to play off the Jeep image? No money for advertising? Plain stupidity? Morons running the show? I say all the above.

Part of the reason is they aren't selling any is that there are none available. I suggested a friend go look at a Patriot and there isn't a single new Patriot or Compass on my dealer's lot. No 2010s; no 2011s.

They've got 3 used, one same year and trim level as mine, with 30-some thousand miles on it . . . for $2000 more than I paid for mine NEW! Wonder why they can't sell it????

Gee, I'm really using that headsmack a lot aren't I?

My 2007 Pat's lease is up in December.... sorry to say guys, I will not be getting another one. I'm either going back to my true love a "Wrangler" or a Ford F150. I do not have too much good to say about my Patriot, too much plastic, not enough umph, cheap over all workmanship. Very disapointed in my Pat, don't get me wrong, it did what I needed it to do (get back and forth from work, drove ok in the snow, etc) but thats about it..... So now my search begins.... Wrangler :) or F-150....... hmmmmmmmm....

There's no denying true love ;) and anything less will always leave you wanting, so go with a new 2011 Wrangler if your pocketbook allows it. You'll get the freshly reworked interior and I believe the new Pentastar engine, too! Both well worth the wait.

Please post pics when you've got the new Wrangler in your garage.

For sure! I'm always pitching commercials for Jeeps to my friends. We should get together and put some story-boards together. They could have some great commercials and expanded-marketing efforts tailored around the Patriot line.

One of Jeep's best assets, I don't care what anyone says, is that they are selling JEEPS. They've forgetten/ failed to capitalize on that valuable identity.

I would have one with a guy in a meeting around a board type table. Snowing outside the window, then cut to a calendar on a fridge with a hockey game for the kids or something marked, and the fellow keeps looking out the window with a worried look. And then cut to a family pounding through snow covered roads in a Patriot. And then after the meeting he gets a call from his wife, they got home fine. And he says "I feel much better with my family in the Patriot". They do have a good safety rating. So why don't they ever advertise how safe they are as a family driver??

I could do some commercials of me driving on the snowmobile trail to get to my house in winter. Check the video at the end of this post to see Todde and Butch going up part of my driveway in winter. At the top of that hill, the snowmobile trail shares part of my driveway.

Or a big 4x4 SUV sitting in the driveway in winter, cause it costs too much for gas. Or a family taking a small car on vacation to save gas, while the neighbor next door packs a ton of stuff in their Patriot. And getting close to the same mileage.
