OK, so my Pat has the badge, and I know what I got as part of the package.

But there is a girl who works here, she has a Liberty with the same badge on it. But there are no tow hooks on her Liberty, front or back, and I can see nothing else that would make it Trail Rated, am I missing something?

I could be a bit higher than other Liberties, but not sure unless I see them side-by-side.

The Libby 4x4 comes with a low gearing system, a "real" transmission, more power, higher clearance, etc. etc. etc. Even in base configuration, the Libby is "more capable" than the TR Patriot. Pretty sure every 4x4 Jeep (except the Patriot base) comes with the badge. Hey, It's a Jeep Thing, we'll never understand...

You can buy a trail rated badge and put it on anything, if someone wants to. It will make people think it is. Jeep's trail rated system, sometimes doesn't make sense if you look at how low the Grand Cherokee sits. Then most people won't use it like some of the Members on this Website would.

I just don't understand a trail rated badge with no hooks though?

I looked at the Liberty when it first came out, looking to replace my Tracker. Then I talked to some folks who had them, and asked a few questions, and the mileage was what held me back. They were getting between 15 and 17 MPG from the folks I talked to. It just wasn't enough for me and my 100 miles per day for work driving.

Trail rated badges started showing up on Jeeps in about 2004. They really don't hold that much importance and the Patriot is really the only Jeep line where it seems to make any sense (FDII=Badge). I've seen new 2010 Wrangler Sports at the dealer with badges and not even have skid plates. It's usually some package trim group that includes the badge I guess.

My "02" Sahara didn't come with a "trail rated" badge and can't even get one if you look at the 2002 parts book. But then all you need is about $25 and you too can be one of the "Trail Rated" gang.:D

Trail Rated or Mall Rated

Trail rated badges started showing up on Jeeps in about 2004. They really don't hold that much importance and the Patriot is really the only Jeep line where it seems to make any sense (FDII=Badge).
Our 09 Jeep Liberty is "Trail Rated", with Wrangler ST tires. Basically, the ST tire is a passenger car tire on a truck/SUV. Look at a lot of Chevy trucks now-a-days and you will see them on their pickups.

Now, the 10 Liberty Renegade comes with full armor protection with all-terrain tires.

According to Jeep. The Trail Rated badge only goes on if the vehicle meets the set criteria. (traction, Ground Clearance,Maneuverability,Articulation,Water Fording)

Which of course, does not include a need for skid plates or tow hooks.

I'm not sure that a trail rated badge means much. To Jeep it's supposed to mean

A Jeep Trail Rated® badge is found on all 4x4s that pass a series of grueling tests designed to prove off-road capability on the world’s most demanding terrain.

There are five main categories of testing:

* Ground clearance
* Articulation
* Maneuverability
* Traction
* Water fording
I'd prefer that the leave it for their high end 4x4s, like the rubicon

As the owner of a multitude of Jeeps, both past and present (I currently own 3), I can clear this up real easily.

A "Trail Rated" Jeep is what was formerly known as the Quadratrack setup, meaning Trail Rated Jeeps are full-time 4WD.

They will still have a lever that will allow you to shift into 4WD LOW for extra power. There is no height difference between 2 and 4 wheel drive Jeeps, unless you go from a 16 to 17 inch tire size.

If your Jeep is 4WD and is not trail rated, in 2WD it will be in rear wheel drive except in the case of the Compass and Patriot. These are considered "crossovers". A crossover is basically an SUV on a car chassis. a non-Trail Rated, 4WD Compass or Patriot will ride as front-wheel-drive in 2WD.

And to clear up some additional curiosity.......
The Compass and the Patriot are the same vehicle with different bodies. They share the same chassis, running gear, drivetrain and interior. The Compass is basically a Dodger Caliber with a Jeep grille. The style of the Patriot body was ifluinced by the Jeep Cherokee.

So there you have it.
Proudly explained by a 3rd generation member of a very faithful Mopar family.
