"Stainless" Steel, depending on its composition, will still rust under the right conditions.

Even if you don't see "red" almost every metal does oxidize (commonly called rust).

Stainless exhausts are pretty standard these days.
...meaning that Patriot has one?

I'm aware of that. But if I compare our 12-year old (like a new) to Patriot which is 2 years old (brown) I can't be too happy about it. I've bought several mufflers that weren't even claimed to be "stainless" and they still lasted ~7 years in our salty conditions.

Just thought I'd share :)

Question?

Is there step by step instructions for this mod anywhere with pics?

I would love to do this mod but have never used spray paint before.... i know that may sound stupid, but it's the truth.
How hard is this to complete without screwing it up?
How much of the car do i need to tape off?

It's easy, I'll try to give you steps from memory.

1, buy a can of flat black header paint (auto parts store should have it) I just bought one yesterday was like $8.50

2, It's easier if you can get a bit more room underneath, like backing onto a set of ramps, or make something with some boards and bricks/blocks. Be sure to chock the front tires (blocks can work for that too) and set the parking brake.

3, Use masking tape and newspaper to mask off the lower part of the bumper and fender behind the wheel, mostly for overspray. I didn't worry about anything under the vehicle, black paint won't hurt any of that.

4, Spray the muffler and if you want to the tail pipe. Better if a no wind day, or done indoors to avoid over spray. Spraying up can be tough, you might need to start each spray horizontal, then tilt the can up.

Anything anyone else wants to add, please do.

Clean it good first. Any spots that look like trouble (surface rust, road tar, grease, deer guts...) should be cleaned up. I would use steel wool, the kind with no soap. Mine was new, so it was pretty clean, just rubbed it down with alcohol. I used flat black BBQ grill paint from Ace Hardware, about $5. Follow the instructions on the can for curing, I ran mine around town for about 20 minutes shortly after the paint job. Its been on about 8 months and still looks great. Only used about 1/3 of the can.

Hiya, mine came black? Is this the new standard? or is it UK spec?
Just like few have already mentioned, export models come with the black muffler. There are tens of similar differences between the two models - North American and Export.

BTW the CRD model is a different thing anyway, but the gasoline export model is known to come with the black muffler also.

Gee, and I had to repaint mine even, you get yours as stock!

I used Grill Paint the first time, and it discolored in some areas, like where the exhaust comes into the muffler. So I repainted using flat black high-temp header paint. Used less than half a can of paint, so gave the rest to a friend with a Compass.

just painted mine and i love it! The paint was $3.58 and it took only 10 min!

I just did mine as well. The easiest and cheapest mod. I bought a can of barbecue grill paint at Home Depot for $3.49. I used a wire brush on the underside to remove any surface rust and then shot it with the paint. I also sprayed the tailpipe itself, it came out great.

Having had mine just short of a week, I knew I couldnt (financially) be doing all the mods right off that Ive been reading about and seeing pics of here.

However, THIS I can do! I'm terribly excited!!

I used grill paint the first time, and then after a few months I got discoloration of the hottest areas. So this time I went to the auto parts store and bought flat black high-temp header paint. I'll let you know if this holds up better than the grill paint.

I finally did this mod. Used VHT header paint and it was great!! I would suggest spending the extra few bucks for this paint because it contains ceramic and is resistant to road grime. It went on very easy and dried quick. Pics later tonight...
I had to sandpaper off the built up road grime after I cleaned it off...then I cleaned it again after sanding and did 2 coats, which was easy since that stuff dries pretty quick.

here we are..sorry, kinda dark pics, thats what you get when you use a blackberry for a camera...

I used this same paint from canadian tire for those in Canada and it really goes on great and dries very quickly as vultite mentioned. From a distance you would really think there is no muffler as I did the tip as well :smiley_thumbs_up:
