Not sure about the extra HP, however hear you loud and clear on the synthetic oil.

I have been using Mobil 1 5W-30 EP and found the engine runs slightly quieter. Also the fuel consumption has dropped slightly too.

I installed a Fumoto valve and can change my oil and filter without ramps!

I hear ya on needing a flashlight for the dipstick. Thats annoying.

I would double check your oil level, that does seem high.

Enjoy your patriot!

You don't need a Fumoto valve or ramps to change the oil and filter. I put 5 quarts in mine and that puts the level right at the top line when the engine is hot.

You are likely to come across a fair amount of debate on that question. I use Mobil 1 EP 5W-30.

I would search oil and you will find several threads pro/con 5w-20, pro/con 5w-30. Most agree a synthetic is best in any case.

whats the best oil product to use?The tips are great but confuse on what oil to use?

Not knocking any brand, I'm saying 15W40 is too thick for the Patriot.
Redline? I think lots of Acuras get driven around redline, and yet Acura is going to be recommending 0W20 for their vehicles....

so what I get out of this thread.....

1) even though my manual says for my 2008 5w-20 I should ignore that and go 5w-30 instead?

2) placing a magnet on the plug grabs metal leftovers, but how would one do that?

3) fill up the new filter with oil before adding it on to the engine during a change.

Your filter will fill with oil as soon as you start the vehicle. This is why after you change oil, check the level, you start the car and let it run a minute or so, and then shut it off and check the level again.

That is very true, but why push a large bubble of air thought the oil system?? Also, the paper fiber of the filter media takes some time to absorb/soak up the oil, so why not bench fill it as much as possible before putting it on? When you bench fill your filter and top it off, walk away for say 5 minutes and when you come back there will likely be almost no oil visible in the bottom of the filter, since the paper media has absorbed it. I ususally start pre-filling my filters the day before I change it, so I know it is fully filled. I guess I am kind of anal about that portion of the change, also then you don't usually have to top off the level when you finish filling the crankcase, just check to make sure it is where you thought it is.

Another drain option to the Fumoto valve is an Aeroquip quick disconnect setup. Granted it is more expensive than the Fumoto valve, but it does have more 'bling' factor and also has a cap to cover the valve between changes. I have been using one on my Legacy for a couple of years and the hose on the fitting allows me to direct the oil where I want it to go.

Since I don't have 5 posts yet, just copy the link text preceded with a www into your browser to see the Aeroquip fittings: aeroquip.cc/aeroquipquick-drainoilpancouplings.aspx
