Basically, my FWD Patriot is a station wagon to the 2nd power. There are trade-offs in any vehicle, but the Patriot has the best balance: 5 star safety, excellent fuel economy, fantastic roadability for an SUV, wa-a-ay better'n any 2wd pick-up for traction in snow or modest off-road situations, the fuel economy among the best for any vehicle, and its above average in every other category I can imagine. Its lacks a little on power, but I drive my FWD Patriot like a family car -- its not a truck or a sports car -- so power isn't really an issue for me. And yes, you can zip into traffic if need be.

I was shopping for a Pontiac G-6; while comparing that to a Dodge Avenger I saw what would become my Patriot. So much more for much less money!

Almost forgot the nice cargo space -- I can pop the canoe on the roof (see my avatar) and I can haul plenty of junk in the back, but nobody ever asks to borrow it when they move! :smiley_thumbs_up:

I guess there were couple of reasons:

1. I had a RWD van for a year and it was absolute nightmare to drive on slippery surfaces so I decided that my next car will be 4x4
2. Patriot looks good, something similar to Hummer, different than most
3. It was cheap, in 1½ years the value of new 2008 Limited (49 000 USD with my options) was dropped to 31 000 USD

3.1 Why I chose Limited when I could've got new Sport with $31 000 - I wanted all the extras I could get since I've had basic models before and always wished that they wouldn't be just basic

Needed a new vehicle: Needed Comfortable seating position (some back pain) and good cargo space. Now 60,000 km later without any problems, it is the perfect vehicle. Good gas mileage and very respectable performance. My two dogs like it too.

I couldn't get a Wrangler in C4C. That being said...The Pat was a better choice. More cargo room, nicer interior, more economical. Just more civilized. If they quit making it, when my warranty runs out in 2012 I will likely get a Wrangler. If they make something very similar to the Patriot, I'll buy another. I'm a believer.

I work out of my Patriot and do mostly freeway driving in the Houston area. I have a mobile office set up in the back complete with a decent sized laser printer, some plastic bins full of supplies, etc. I had briefly used my '07 Ram as a work vehicle and that was just not working. So I started looking for a (relatively) cheap work car. Being a diehard Mopar fan, my criteria were it had to be a Chrysler product, had to be a hatchback or SUV of some kind so I could use the cargo area for work, and it had to be fuel efficient. First I considered the Caliber, but the cargo area was not as useful even though the rear hatch on the Caliber does open higher (a slight problem for me on the Patriot). I didn't consider the Compass, because those are butt ugly. I only glanced at the PT Cruiser, because well, it's a PT Cruiser. The only other thing I seriously considered was a first generation Liberty, but the better fuel economy of the Patriot and being able to get such a good deal on a used '08 model ultimately won me over.

Smallest SUV with Largest Cargo room we could find, along with Largest passenger room for back seat, so can travel with carseat & parent in back with one parent driving comfortably. Wanted to feel like had something in front of me as driver too - didn't get that in a vibe, and some others drove.

In your reliability/recall issue, was glad to see this on another forum today:
Vehicle in Top 7 NOT recalled.

Another reason - able to get a low mileage used 2008 a month ago for very reasonable price, making it the most affordable SUV to purchase with lower payments.

Many people think that for a off road vehicle you need a big powerful vehicle. True more horsepower and big knobby tires is the norm for off roading, but can you drive that everyday with the same comfort of a car? A good off road vehicle only needs to be light and agile, which the Patriot is. granted your not going to be doing any mud bogging or rock crawling but if you wanted a vehicle for that you wouldn't be on this site.

Yes the Patriot is based off of a car platform, but the platform is sturdy enough and tough enough to tackle off roading, and trail driving. I spent two years looking at all the different vehicles out there and the first one that I said "I could see me driving that," was the Patriot.

I'm not a four door car driving kind of guy either. I've driven Muscle Cars and 4X4 trucks my entire life. The Patriot is a great vehicle, you can drive it across the country and take any trails you come across along the way. Before the Patriot, I would drive my "Good Gas Mileage" Car on long drives (A Chevy Malibu with over 400HP) that got 12 MPG's on the highway. If I came across a gravel dirt road Id say to my wife "we should have drove the truck" and she would just roll her eyes and say "I ain't riding 1200 miles in that uncomfortable thing just so you can have 5 miles of fun"

Now with Patriot I have both comfort and fun. Good gas mileage and off road capability. And something else, which if the Patriot didn't have I wouldn't have given it a second glance.,"The Look," allow me to elaborate. When I look a modern vehicles I get sick, they all look the same. I can't tell the difference between some brands it is getting so bad that even Japanese cars look like American Cars now. And SUV's are the worst at copying each other. Jeep is Jeep it looks like a Jeep it is square boxy and beautiful, two round head lights spaced by a slotted grill that just seems to smile at you. I LOVE IT!

Early 2007 wife and I were at my favorite Chrysler/Jeep store getting an oil change on our 01 T&C. Went out on the lot and showed her an 07 Patriot and told her when we traded her 05 PT Cruiser I wanted to get her a Patriot. Couple months later the kids need a car so we sold them the PT and bought the wife a nice shiny new steel grey . . . . . . . Sebring. Hey its what she wanted. Fast forward to 09 and C4C and she says "Maybe you should go check out a Patriot." Traded a 91 Chevy with 189,000 miles on it. 3500$ from C4C and 4500 off from Chrysler and a 21000$ Patriot turns into my new wheels. Stone white, 4X2, 5 speed, cruise and power windows package. Average 25-26 MPG mixed driving and 31 to 33 highway. I'm 60+ and had a lot of cars but this is my first Jeep. I just realy enjoy driving this vehicle.. The ESP is just beyond belief in snow, especially with the 5 speed. Like my T&C LXI the little Patriot will be around a very long time. Love that lifetime powertrain warrenty too. Ric

robi454 hit it right on the head. It LOOKS like a Jeep. I remember the first face lift on the Chrysler mini vans when they rounded and smoothed them out. The Patriot is kind of like that. A more efficient, rounded off smoother Cherokee. Ride has a confidence, firm but not choppy. Interior is well layed out and confortable. Smooth clutch and shifter. Great feel to the steering and the ESP and roll mitigation work flawlessly. Ric

LOL to us non-Americans a car with 1600 kg weight and 2.4-litre engine is anything but "light". Talk about a good light off road car, I remember Suzuki Samurai / Jimny. (Yes yes, I do realize that Patriot is smaller than some other Jeeps and Land Cruisers, I just couldn't resist because it sounded so funny. I do understand what you meant.) :D

I bought this one as we needed an SUV due to problems with our 2004 Isuzu Ascender having a lot of trouble at 31 thousand miles.

I have always been a Mopar guy but just could never afford an SUV until now. The Jeep has always been one I have owned before in the past and liked and had no problems with it.

The Jeeps I owned in the past where wrecked and my dad owned a body shop and he fixed them up.

I got a good deal on trade in and Im enjoying the Pat and not worried I traded in a full size SUV as I feel the Jeep has more room.

Availability of vinyl seats.
Availability of manual transmission.
