The higher octane may actually reduce mileage. Stick with the 87 octane. The Patriot's ignition and fuel system was designed to expect a certain amount of "ping" from 87 octane and everything is mapped around that. As odd as it sounds, the higher octane can mess with the "map" and cause higher consumption. As for mileage increasing tips, there are tons of posts on here about it.
As a summary:
  • Keep RPMS low (try to stay below 2500 or even 2000 rpm)
  • Put a few extra pounds of air in the tires (some folks run 40+, I keep mine at 38 psi cold)
  • Keep highway speeds at 65 mph or lower. Above 65 and the fuel consumption goes way up on our little square boxes.
  • Use cruise control whenever possible (I've even used it on 25-45 mph roads if it's a long stretch and traffic is light).
  • Minimize idle time. I only give my Jeep about the time it takes to buckle my seat belt, arrange my coat and light a cigarette before I start driving. I drive easy on the cold drive train until the temp gauge starts moving, but it warms up a lot faster and you waste less gas.
Search the forum for other tips, there are tons out there.

if you want better fuel mileage get a small toyota.

i dont get it. Its full of threads worrying about their gas mileage, and how to get better mileage. You knew what you were getting when you got the car. If you drive like an old lady you will get about 25mpg. If you dont you will get less.

If you want something better, go get a 4 cylinder car and you will get over 30MPG.

possibly people are disappointed because the Pat does not get the EPA rated mileage but seriously does any vehicle. Those numbers should only be used as a rough guide.

My experience the pat is anywhere from spot on to exceeding EPA mileage listed.

Last weekend again I got 25 mpg on the highway with my FDII when rated at 22. Driving style and speed has a lot to do with it, plus 0w20.

This was two way 150 miles.

those are estimated numbers. Based on you driving like an old lady. You should always calculate a few less miles every time. for ex: 2010 patriot says 28mpg, then you will probably get 24mpg.

like i said, if you dont like it, you can always get a small 4 cylinder car.

I average 22 mpg city, and 25 highway. My EPA rating on my sticker says 21/24. I don't drive like an old lady. I could probably drive very conservatively and get 23/26. It's all in how you drive. I have another thread going where I'm trying to get terrible mileage...which is not going all that well...I'm still at 18.5 estimated by my scangauge.

Here's the basics.
Stay under 2K RPM while accelerating.
Keep an eye far ahead and start coasting if you are going to need to stop.
Try not to ever come to a complete stop. I.E. anticipate the light change and keep rolling. (obey stop signs. duh! )
Use Pure gasoline. no ethanol.
Increase tire pressure but do not exceed what it says on the tire for max pressure.
Remove the cross bars on the roof rack.
Oddly enough, a clean waxed car will get slightly better mileage.
Drive slower. 60 MPH seems to be the sweet spot for best mileage.
Do not waste time letting the engine warm up excessively! The best mileage comes after the coolant temp is over 180. The car warms up faster as you drive slower when it idles.

The Patriot is more than capable of exceeding the EPA sticker MPG on a regular basis. Childishly simple to do in the summer (above 50), rather difficult in the winter.

This is all based on my experience. Others opinions and experience will vary.

LOL!

I was down to 15.5 last week. Do I win? :pepper:
In town. Lots of lights. Short trips. Cold temps. A good mileage nightmare!

I don't even want to know what my '82 J-10 with the 360 V8 gets under the same conditions.

Ah the curse of ethanol, we could have a whole other thread on that silliness:mad:
Food vs Fuel
Foreign vs Domestic
worth it vs not
Government subsidize or not
Harmful to engines?

Yep, you could debate that on many levels for weeks and never get anywhere.
(so let's not);)
